Are major Hollywood announcements still shut down or has there been enough time since GvK’s release with no news been enough to conclude that “yeah, they aren’t extending the agreement with Toho and that was the last one”? If they’re done I’m fine with it since I think they haven’t matched the quality of G14 and Skull Island even though I love the directors and their hearts were in the right place.

We’re more than likely getting a sequel to Kong before we see big G again. More hollow earth fuckery would be cool, it’s a fantastic looking setting and could be further expanded on.

I wonder if Legendary could introduce their own mechanical King Kong. Toho owns the rights to the Mecha Kong they created, of course, but is the concept of a mechanical version of a character unique enough that it can be copywrited?

Mecha Kong has a bit of history of bring legally questionable. I think they thought about re-introducing Mechani-Kong back in the early nineties for the film that would eventually become Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, but, although they did technically own the Mecha Kong character they still felt it was too risky because, as with these kind of rights issues, there is a level of interpretation as to whether something violates someone else's property, and it would still be too close to King Kong. Heads up for anyone else who bought the Godzilla Criterion set: https://twitter.com/KyoeiToshi/status/1460321753062903809 Thankfully mine seem to be ok, but there are quite a few people mentioning their disks getting dirty. It seems like its possible to clean the glue off and the discs will still play.

The writing process behind the film sounded like a real trainwreck, just a whole bunch of people pulling it in different directions and insisting on various changes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla_vs._Kong#Writing They clearly wrote themselves into a corner for the end of the film where they had half the characters stuck in a super remote, impossible to get to location and the other half in Hong Kong (even after they had to invent bullshit secret undersea hyperloop tunnels to get some of them there) and had no clear way of bringing them together again until some intern wrote "Big lizard magic breath make hole???" on the whiteboard and then no one else could think of anything so they just went with that. It was so loving brazen, I love it.
