When Godzilla first flopped onto land in Shin I was definitely laughing (quietly!) in the movie theater. And I think it was legit laughter at a funny thing. But slowly it changed from 100% comedy laughter to 50% nervous laughter to 100% nervous laughter. They do a good job of focusing on Godzilla long enough to force you to get over the initial hilarity and just stare at it, which upon closer inspection is unnerving as gently caress.

Any news about more showings, or a Blu-ray release or something? I missed the short time it was running and had to work on the extra days they added.

Maaaaaan, Funi's release ain't gonna be in nearly as good a package. They'll probably just slap the poster on the front of the case. Also, Funi will probably record a dub for the movie, which'll hold things up. Waffleman_ fucked around with this message at 03:16 on Dec 24, 2016 |

This was a brilliant and quite clever subversion of the notion that kaiju flicks are silly and juvenile by nature -- the slow buildup to horrific, intimate tragedy completely twists expectations and cements the "poo poo got real" tone of the rest of the film. Man, I just love Shin so loving hard.

I may not have watched a whole lot in theaters in 2016, but I'm still confident saying ShinGoji is my Film of the Year. I love it so.

Same here. The last time I enjoyed a movie that much was Gojira in 2004. What can I say, I love the guy.

The voices and accents are broad but superior to the outright poor acting and mixing of the international dubs. The main reason live action dubbing sucks for us Americans is, we're not used to it. In places like Italy and Germany all the big Hollywood movies are dubbed.

The way I have heard it, back in the 60s and 70s Japanese operations for English Dubbing would often extremely literally just pull white dudes in off the street because they knew they spoke English. That's why there's such a wide distinction in talent quality in them.

Godzilla dubs own just because they provided the essential tracks necessary for not only King Geedorah, but also the rest of the Monster Island Czars.

There's a fair amount of interpretation by the article author in there, too, but the main thrust is that Anno stole the movie from Higuchi. Anno is my hero.

Because of course they'd have Yaguchi and Kayoco hook up. Good for Anno for shoving that crap aside.

At least Anno isn't becoming more conservative with age and the changing political climate in Japan. He's always been an outspoken critic of that stuff.
|

It seems like to the crew, Anno's biggest sin was actually being a director and not just a name for marketing to slap on the poster to get people to come.
