Watched Final Wars last night, for the first time.

It blew the hat right off my head. What a picture.

Edit: Just remembered Hedorah and Ebirah getting blasted into a building, the building moving about a mile so that it crashes into a taller building, and the taller building crushing them, and now the rest of my day will be a little better because of it.

See, this is part of why I love the Godzilla franchise. It is absolutely chock-full of films that for various different reasons fall under the umbrella of "I wouldn't want every entry to be like this, but I'm glad they tried it at least once"

History shows, again and again, how nature points out the folly of man.
For anyone into boutique blu-ray releases, Vinegar Syndrome is putting out a fancy 4K release of the 1967 Korean kaiju classic (?) Yongary, Monster from the Deep. Their recent Gorgo and Reptilicus releases were great, so I'm already bought in.

You might be familiar with tokusatsu director Kiyotaka Taguchi who has done a ton of Ultraman work over the last decade+ and a whole lot more

His current directors project is the fantasy anime Clevatess and the first episode had a gorgeous extended scene of a kaiju attacking a fortified city and leisurely dismantling it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew3ZwDbUAtA

He also blended in some miniatures effects into certain shots, which is exactly what you'd expect from a tokusatsu guy :v:

Rewatching Spacegodzilla for the umpteenth time and finally softening on it. It's still a mess but the island scenery is lovely and now I think a lot of the film honestly looks better than Mechagodzilla II. Spacegodzilla and Godzilla's arrivals in Fukuoka are well done. I've come around on M.O.G.U.E.R.A too!

I rented Godzilla Minus One on Amazon and I’m like 2/3 of the way through it (started it late last night) but I like it a lot so far.

I think it’s going to be a Kaiju and Kaiju-adjacent 4-day weekend. I’m not super well versed in kaiju movies (I’ve seen most of the Monsterverse movies and liked them all, I’ve seen OG 1954 Godzilla, I’ve seen the Roland Emmerich Godzilla, I really like Pacific Rim), but I have an Apple TV + free trial so I think I’m going to binge the Monarch show and I just bought Criterion’s 4K Godzilla ‘54 so I think I’ll watch that, and I saw HBO Max has a bunch of kaiju movies so I’m down to check those out. Does anyone have any choice recommendations from what’s on HBO (or available anywhere else on streaming I guess)? I already know I’m going to watch Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.

The 90s Gamera trilogy (Guardian of the Universe, Attack of Legion, Revenge of Iris) are all on Tubi and are definitely worth watching if you're in a monster mood.

‘Vs Destroyah’ and ‘Shin’ are two of my favorites. ‘Vs Megalon’ is super fun if you’re into the more goofy variety of Godzilla adventure, as is fan favorite ‘Vs Hedorah’ (aka ‘The Smog Monster’)- both of which were on HBO the last time I checked. I would personally advise against wasting your time on ‘Monarch’ but YMMV…

I like Godzilla vs Ebirah (the Sea Monster) for a good G-film that follows the human story well and still gives Godzilla his due. It has an absurdist vibe at times, and you need to appreciate the weird to really get Godzilla.

I also like the Gamera animated series on Netflix. It has fantastic kaiju fights, good characters, interesting conspiracies, and one of the most batshit plot twists in kaiju media.

The Monarch show is okay to disappointing. It does a good job of telling the story it set out to tell, it's just that almost the entire audience wanted something different.

I'd second "vs. Hedorah" and "Shin Godzilla". I personally think they're tough sells as they're a little left-of-center. BUT they're definitely about / reckoning / in conversation with modern concerns of the time that they were made, (Hedorah is pollution, Shin is post-tsunami) and that makes them worthwhile and part of the lineage of the OG '54 Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One.

Hedorah is on Criterion Channel streaming, and Shin's available a bunch of places. If you have the Criterion channel, they have a bunch of Ishiro Honda movies in a playlist. I haven't had a chance to check them out, but he directed the OG Godzilla and basically got locked into kaiju movies for the rest of his career. They'd be deep cuts if you're looking to stretch the kaiju muscles.

Godzilla Final Wars, if you can get it, is also my recommend. I'm not deep in any Godzilla lore or whatever, and I still had an extremely amazing super-fun blast all throughout it.

And maybe the OG Godzilla vs Mothra as a deeper recommend, since Mothra is kind of the yin to Godzilla's yang based on design and the length of time Mothra's been around as a kaiju creature.

Trip report: I watched some Kaiju movies. Full disclosure: I’m drunk on rum right now.

1. Godzilla X Kong: the New Empire

A neat movie, I like how creative it got with the ecosystem of the Hollow Earth. Trapper was a cool character, he was fun. I will say, I’m less interested in Kong than I am in Godzilla, so learning that Godzilla got 8 (eight) minutes of screen time felt kinda lame, although I will acknowledge that it felt like more than 8 minutes. Neat movie overall, I don’t regret watching it, even if it carries over the over-the-top silliness from the prior movie that felt a little jarring compared to ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ (which I liked).

2. Godzilla va Biollante

I very specifically watched this movie because there’s a Criterion release and I wanted to gauge if I should buy it while the sale is going on. I get that this movie is meant to be a commentary on genetic research and experimentation. It did feel like the movie had a bit of a challenge with balancing its characters; Godzilla is in the intro, and then the bulk of the next part is on Biollante, but then Godzilla shows up and nearly kills her, leading to a long stretch of them trying to kill Godzilla, and then Biollante comes back and Godzilla kills her again and then swims off.
The battle scenes were cool, I don’t know how the Godzilla suit stood up to that punishment of having stuff shot at it and pyrotechnics going off all over the place. The effects in the water and the destruction of planes and boats was really cool for practical effects.

I’m now watching Godzilla vs Hedorah.

Detective No. 27

I think Biollante works a little better if you watch Return of Godzilla right before it. It dovetails really nicely into the other.

I’m 2.5 episodes into the Monarch show and…. I’m really digging it so far? Like right from Godzilla 2014 the idea of a secret agency that tracks and studies kaiju struck me as a cool premise in an SCP sort of way, and the show is really clicking for me on that front.

Like yeah the monsters are used sparingly, and I get that’s because it’s a TV show, but when they do show up it feels earned and the effects don’t feel cheap so I’m ultimately okay with it.
