Edwards said he's spent the last several years doing two big, special effects laden films, and he's burnt out right now, and that for his next film he wants to do something smaller. That's it.

She at least had something to do (die, unfortunately), but Sally Hawkins had a character that could have been portrayed just as efficiently by an extra off the street. It was such a waste.

Well, maybe they'll correct that for Godzilla 2, since it was just announced that she's returning.

The best thing about G '14 was that he was animated so well that you could tell what he was thinking just from his facial expressions. Like in the climax and the Flying MUTO was zipping by him, you could tell G was thinking "You fucker".

edit: ok i just learned that there was a seismic event in Australia in 1993 that was for a while unexplained, and someone floated the theory that, since the event happened close to a farm owned by the Aum Shinrikyo, who were known to be working on developing powerful weapons, the event was caused by a nuclear weapons test attempted by the Aum, so now I want a new Godzilla movie where the monster that Godzilla fights is a giant abomination made up of various animals from the Australian Outback that were mutated by nuclear weapons owned by a doomsday cult. Who do I talk to to have that movie made?

How about Godzilla vs a giant Paul Hogan?

Hadn't seen that, fair enough.

It also amuses me that I think Godzilla in that movie had more personality than Army dude. Godzilla is old and tired, but this is his goddamn world and if you think you can dethrone the King of the Monsters then gently caress you. I loved that shot of the American fleet escorting Godzilla across the ocean, clearly no point in even trying to hurt him so may as well give him an honor guard. And both Muto kills, it's easy to see Godzilla going "Okay, I'm loving done with your bullshit."

In most Godzilla films, Big G has more personality than the humans.

Outlaw Vern has been reviewing films from the summer of 1998 and he finally got to Godzilla. It's a good review and it actually has some interesting tidbits about Roland Emmerich I'd never heard before. Makes it very clear that he was absolutely the wrong person to make an American Godzilla.

http://outlawvern.com/2018/05/22/godzilla-1998/

I remember an interview with Emmerich where he complained Toho was difficult to work with, because, and are you ready for this wholly unreasonable request? Toho said Godzilla had to have three rows of spines down his back.
