My hype is crazy and I feel I would like a Kaiju for my work desk. Is there a consensus on which ones own and which ones blow?

I’m personally looking for a late-Showa dog faced Godzilla (my favorite), a Showa MechaG,
Or of course any of the three featured in this new film.

What’s some of your favorite Godzilla merchandise?

Throughout my hype for this film I’ve ended up discovering that a couple of my friends just don’t have a love for Godzilla. Not an active dislike, just that the premise of a giant lizard stomping on things never enticed them.

I just don’t understand.

As a semi-casual Godzilla/Kaiju fan can somebody answer me why these Kaiju toys are so gently caress-rear end expensive? I’m just trying to bless up my cubicle with a Hedorah, I don’t want to take out a loan to do it.

Age and rarity for the non Monster Arts/NECA figures. You're likely looking at the Movie Monster Series Hedorah, which was released in 2006 and not very widely at that.

You could get a Gigan that released last year for anywhere from 15 to 20 bucks, depending on what store you find it at and import costs, but Hedorah only ever had the one release so he's a lot rarer.

That's the one nice thing about these kind of figures- they do not depreciate in price if that matters to you. That's also the bad thing- if you don't get it while it's still fresh on the market, get hosed in the ear because you're screwed.

That’s helpful to know, thank you. I have the Bandai ‘68 Godzilla (07) and just picked up Mechagodzilla from 09. They do look great and I like the dichotomy of the two kaiju but I have the itch to expand. I’m glad to know it sounds like I can take my time. I’ll go Ghidorah hunting in the mean time.

E: Whatever monster, really. I think they’re cute and cool.

Gamera Super Monster is a bad movie but IMO it’s good for putting on when hosting loud parties.

The 90’s gamera trilogy is worth a blind buy for any kaiju fan. Showa Gamera is very much a lower rent, more child friendly Kaiju that may not be for everyone. I like the cartoony style but the older ones definitely don’t hold tour attention the way the 90’s ones do.

I’m in the minority here, but that’s probably my personal favorite era. Here are the 1970’s Godzilla movies:

Godzilla vs Hedorah
Godzilla vs Gigan
Godzilla vs Megalon
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Terror of Mechagodzilla

Hedorah I love because it’s so weird. It’s got an uneven pace but ultimately there’s enough odd decisions made throughout that I am entertained.

Gigan is pretty dire, I’ll admit. I think that had the smallest budget. It’s shot really dark, the theme park plot is especially dumb, and it’s pretty obvious that Gigan is made of an old Ghidorah suit. I don’t look on that one very fondly.

Megalon is a classic z-movie. It’s so threadbare and silly that it makes for an excellent movie to drink with friends. And it’s got Jet Jaggah. It’s very dumb but very charming in a way that Gigan wasn’t.

The two Mechagodzillas are undoubtedly fun times though. The franchise ended on a very high note IMO. The soundtracks are great, the violence is kicked up a notch and the human/alien plots in both are more of a polished re-do of a couple earlier films but who’s counting? Terror especially is well paced and I have a soft spot for the Titanosaur. The amount of fireworks they stuff into the Mechagodzilla suit is awesome too. Also they never topped that MechaG design IMO.

The only ‘essential’ Gamera movies are the 90’s ones IMO. I never found any of the original run to be particularly entertaining.

I'm under the impression that a lot of Japanese studios feel like their properties should command as much money overseas as they do at home, which makes things prohibitively expensive. I'm sure a lot of distributors would like to just have the rights to distribute Godzilla in English-speaking countries but it would probably cost an arm and a leg for the rights to every movie starring the big guy.

It does surprise me how niche the Kaiju genre actually is in America. I don’t quite get why giant monsters smashing things never quite makes that big of a splash over here.

I’ve been watching Ultraman ‘66 (it’s great).

Can someone explain to me what is happening when Hayata presses the capsule to trigger Ultraman?

Is this a possession? Is Hayata piloting this guy? Where is Ultraman going when he flies off? When the color timer runs out, does this kill Hayata?

Besides that, this show has been hitting the spot for me perfectly.

Kart Barfunkel

I’m just about finished watching Ultraseven. It was a bit of a slow start but the show really grew into its one identity and style and by the end I really fell in love with it.

My intention was originally to watch the first 3 series, which the original creator was involved in, and then move on. But I think I’ll give Return of Ultraman a chance.

I also watched a random ep of Taro on a whim. The one with the drunk kaiju and the boy in drag starting a band with a bunch of aliens. I may have to try that series eventually as well. Frankly I can see myself going through all the Showa era ultra shows.

I’m also thinking of trying Kamen Rider soon too but that’s a whole other kettle of worms.

You're right it is, and no, they didn't. The rights for the Heisei era are complicated.

Having said that, most of the Heisei movies are streaming on the channel (minus MechaG II and Space Godzilla).
