I thought circle gates were a korean thing and octo was the american style

American sticks are gateless and are constructed pretty differently as a whole from Japanese sticks.

Octo gates have never been standard anywhere and in fact I'm a little confused on why they exist at all, now that I think of it. Anyone got the historical context for them?

Same guy who wrote that SRK How to Play Fighting Games ebook, by the way. Dude's a friend and writes cool articles.

I like this article because the guy he called out for "losing the spirit of Marvel" while spending a year in Korea is a good friend of ours. I actually played Marvel with said friend once or twice while in Korea, maybe I was part of the problem

My SFIV TE arcade stick is acting wonky. The lower corners are no longer registering reliably. I opened it up and everything looks physically fine, but it's pretty obvious that something is sticking in the game. For example when I tap right the character takes one or two steps before returning to neutral. Should I just replace the physical stick or am I better off replacing the whole drat thing?

For example should I just get this?

Make sure you're on the DP setting instead of LS/RS before you do so, but if you're on the right setting then replacing the switches would be the correct next step.

PCB talk: I just bought a Brook Universal Fighting Board and wired it up to my stick. It seems to work fine on my PC and laptop (detects the inputs fine and everything). My PS4 doesn't seem to be detecting it though. Anyone know what's up? I updated to the latest firmware but no dice.

If you lost because your opponent put in the time to learn things that optimize their character's damage output (like a combo) and you didn't, that's 100% your fault

cs_summit was last week and that was far and away the best CS event I've ever watched by light years precisely because of the complete lack of esports bullshit around the production. It felt almost like (surprise!) what fighting game events used to be like.

Are there any good premade stick enclosures available on the market? I have an old HRAP2 with Sanwa parts that I wanna upgrade to a proper modern stick with a Brook PCB. I saw https://www.focusattack.com/makestick-pro-fightstick-enclosure/, but I'm wondering if there are any other good pre-fab enclosure options.

Yo I just bought this loving enclosure from http://allfightsticks.com and it's actually super sick. Highly recommend, it's all metal and weighs a goddamn ton. They're fully customizable with a bunch of different layouts (even hitboxes for you weirdos out there). Really high build quality and the guy that runs the business is top notch in terms of service.

It is, but it's separate from the main controller inputs. You either need a 4 pin soldered header and harness to use it or to just solder your wires directly to the solder points on the PCB.

What do you mean by soldering header? I was under the impression that this thing didn't need soldering.

The "core" stick controls (start, select, home/guide, joystick + 8 buttons) can be wired entirely through the screw terminal interface (edit: meaning, without soldering). L3/R3/TP key are not used in most games, so they've been moved to a separate area, probably to save space or something.

The L3/R3/TP key input points are highlighted below:

It can be a 4-pin header like the one on shown on the right, used with something similar to the harness shown on the left to connect to your buttons:

Or you can just solder your wires directly to those points and connect your buttons from there. Either way you're not getting TP key functionality without having _something_ soldered there. You can buy the UFB with pre-soldered headers from most vendors that sell them, but I'm not sure if the 4-pin harness is as readily available. Probably not too hard to make your own with stuff you get at your local electronics store.

Thank you. As I said before, I need to replace my Hori HRAP4 USB, but it uses a 5 female pin input. Everywhere else I see only has 4 pin inputs. :(

Edit - Will I still need to solder it of I buy this one?

You won't need to solder it (that's the one with pre-soldered headers as I mentioned in that post). You will need to find a way to get or make a 4-pin JST female harness, though.

Also not sure what you mean by replacing the USB? The TP key stuff seems fairly unrelated to that...
