I'm sad I didn't join this on the ground floor because I'm a German who played Wolf3D as a child (technically super-illegal) and would have enjoyed making fun of some of the stuff the enemies say (has anyone even commented on the iconic "mein Leben"?). Still, this is the first anthology LP I've watched where I didn't have some problem with the style or quality of commentating, so good job on that. I really like the concept and hope there will be more series and genre overview threads with informative content about how things evolved over time. Having said that, I think to be perfect the LP would need some sort of veteran who's a decade or so older than you guys at least, because it's kind of hard to explain the fascination of some of this stuff when you didn't play it when it was new. I've played Doom with another goon after suggesting to try out some old co-op stuff and we basically had the opposite problem: We had a blast, but it would have been even greater to have some young whippersnapper playing with us to whom we could explain why some of the stuff was so significant back then. Id in particular is a company who was always on the vanguard of gaming technology, at least back in the olden days, with almost every Quake or Doom engine seeming like a paradigm shift. Anyway, good work, guys. Here's to a long-lasting mammoth of a thread.

Well there's more gratuitous poor German coming up in the expansion packs that we haven't commentated over yet. I'm open to having more people join us. Our oldest guy is Coffee, and I think that's only by like 4 years. Also, thanks for the kind words!

Well, I've played most main id FPSes up until about Quake 4 at the time they were released, and I have seen friends play pretty much every PC shooter that came out in the 90s, so I'm sure I could find some things to say. But any of the Wolfenstein games would probably be a good candidate. Note, however, that in the original Wolf3D, most of the German is either complete nonsense or mispronounced so badly that I could never make it out. Maybe if I can summon up the energy I'll make a post about voice samples.

It's kinda amazing how Commander Keen improved from the first game in a short amount of time. 2 and 3 have better level design by a lot compared to the various mazes in 1. Though, watching this video was all I needed to finally realize that the aliens from Half-Life aren't the aliens from Keen, despite them both starting with Vorti-

Sorry to interrupt, because this is jumping ahead just a little, but... do you know the brand new Doom game, out for a week tomorrow? It's good. Really good; probably the best shooter I've played since... I don't know how long. Weapons are thunderous in your hand, fighting is fast and visceral, the monsters are gorgeous and truly feel like updates from their classic versions, and it's taking me a while to play through because I keep looking for secrets in the big juicy levels. Check out the Games thread for more information; I highly recommend it. But this LP needs about 18+ years to get there, so I do apologize for jumping the gun a little. Just wanted to share. Carry on! (Great LP.)

Excellent LP so far, but one small gripe with the sound balance: when you talk, you overpower the music; but you never stop talking for more than two or three seconds. (which makes your "oh this is a nice song" comments a little frustrating)

Enjoying the Lps so far. Also it's reminded me my Id and friends collection isn't complete so I ordered Hexen yesterday. Wouldn't mind seeing Shadowcaster in there. Also some of the source ports like Tenebrae which was the best goddamned thing I seem unable to find any more. Or it doesn't work nowadays. I forget. But it's the best way to Quake. As opposed to my 22 year old rear end trying to play it on a 486 sx with a 133 Overdrive chip back in the day.

Tenebrae was an unfinished mess, trying to shoehorn Doom 3-style lighting into Quake. It's like those HD texture packs, they just don't look right for the low-poly environments. Quakespasm with linear texture filtering and software-style lighting, that's the way to play Quake. The textures were never meant to be bilinear filtered, they get all washed out looking. It's the same thing with Doom. KozmoNaut fucked around with this message at 09:02 on May 21, 2016 |

I love "Jazzin' Them Nazis" the best out of all the songs in wolf3d, but I could barely hear it the whole time.

We usually record Thursdays between 4:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. Pacific Time. Also, we're quite a few videos ahead of the update schedule, so it's best to keep that in mind if you're interested in a specific game/wad. I suppose I'll have to be a bit more transparent with the things we're recording now though. Unfortunately, I've been deleting the raw footage for my videos as they get uploaded, because they're freaking huge, so I won't be able to re-upload the videos that are already out with better sound balance. I will keep this in mind moving forward though. I was just telling Red how I don't exactly have an ear for audio editing, so it's really a learning experience for me. I'll be sure to do better in the future!

Also, I actually have the Spear of Destiny big box. Bought it for super cheap at some point. When looking now the floppies aren't actually in the box so they're probs in a floppy case at my parent's place, but the box and manual are here... as well as a "warranty registration" card you apparently were meant to mail to FormGen. I can snap some pictures if wanted.

Looking forward to Catacombs 3D. I played the crap out of that as a kid. Also if you think wolf 3D gives you motion sickness you should try Blake Stone. It's got a lot of content for this generation of shooters but something about the way they scroll the movement is just horrible.

This game is so loving good. I've only just got back from hell so I'm not sure how far I am, but I love that basically the answer to increased difficulty is 'GET ANGRIER KILL FASTER'. Murkin' demons at breakneck speeds is the best gamn feeling, and I was physically aroused when I unlocked the minigun's turret mode.

I'm not sure if those wads after SoD expansions are a subdivision of that, if not, that would be my last chance to jump in as the resident Jerry for the originals. I wouldn't mind some other DOS game, but definitely remind me before you go into the various Wolfenstein reboots.

So here's something I'm interesting in contributing in I've been looking for an excuse to start doing Doom maps, and this could also be part of a Doom Builder special for the LP. It's the DUMP(No relation) -- the Doom Upstart Modding Project part 3. It's an invitation for new people to Doom mapping to contribute. I'm not necessarily an upstart myself, but I am really amateur when it comes to making maps, so I think I'd like to participate. I guess I'm also checking to see if anyone else in the thread would be interested in participating in this. Thyrork posted:E: Yeah, hit me up if you want a brit on your crew for Strife.
