https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrY9eHkXTa4 'Cause all I ever have, Redemption songs, Redemption songs. Welcome, friends, to the GDT for UFC 196: With many an MMA fan’s origins in following the sport stemming from professional wrestling, it’s no wonder we’re all such suckers for a good redemption story. Thankfully, this stellar card should bring plenty of redemption angles our way. Let’s find out more about them! For the Light Heavyweight Interim Title Jon “Bones” Jones vs. Ovince “pantomining cunnalingus is a black fraternity thing and you wouldn’t understand” Saint Preux Jon Jones understands the power of redemption. After all, he is on his fifth or sixth one now. He understands now that Ovince Saint Preux has a big opportunity, filling in for current champ Daniel “Cool Dad” Cormier on short notice. A lot of goons like to bury him as boring, and I think that’s a little unfair, but the boring fights he does have are so catastrophically boring that I can’t blame them for having that overall impression. Can he redeem his reputation as a finisher and cool guy to watch by surprising everyone and taking it to the former champ? He sure hopes so. For the Flyweight Title Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (c) vs. Henry “the Third Person” Cejudo Professional Twitch Streamer Mighty Mouse Johnson also happens to be probably the best fighter in the entire world. Undefeated since a close loss to then-and-now 135-pound Dominick Cruz, Mighty Mouse’s striking, wrestling, speed, timing and cardio have all looked impeccable, winning almost every round, breaking the same submission record twice and cleaning out his division in that time. With an uninterrupted win streak that long, he hopes to have collected enough souls to redeem them after this card and level up his guy in Dark Souls 3™ out now on Microsoft XBox One. At just 29 years old, Henry Cejudo is some much-needed fresh blood in the flyweight division that has been dominated by a single champ for almost its entire existence. The youngest American wrestler to earn Olympic gold, Cejudo carries a lot of clout and pressure each time he enters the Octagon. Despite this background, most of his UFC fights have been contested on the feet, where he has showcased his Shieldsesque Improved Kickboxing. The undefeated prospect has also struggled with his weight cuts throughout his career, oftentimes simply dropping out of fights because he decided he couldn’t make weight in time. Will he redeem himself on the scale Friday night? Stay tuned. Lightweight Anthony “Showtime” Pettis vs. Edson Barboza Like with our main event, Anthony Pettis is a former champ who has fallen from grace in the eyes of his fans and Wheaties enthusiasts. After riding a huge wave of excitement from his flashy, unorthodox kicking game, Pettis is on the first losing streak of his career, after losing his belt in a wrestlefucking to current champ Rafael dos Anjos and then being held against the fence but the smaller but game Eddie Alvarez.Has Pettis’ move from Rufousport to Jackson-Winklejohn shored up his defensive wrestling game to finally dictate the pace of the fight and redeem himself in the eyes of his fans? Let’s find out as he fights a Brazilian kickboxer. In the long-ago days of 2012, before Rousey and McGregor, Edson Barboza seemed to have the trappings of a media darling. His huge head kick KO over Terry Etim earned him a spot on Sports Illustrated’s annual moments of the year poll, and the undefeated rising star looked to be on the fast track for a title fight. He was then TKO’d by Jamie Varner, and has since yet to go on as big of a streak. Most of his wins are exciting, but he’s been put away by Cerrone and Tony Ferguson and outpointed by Michael Johnson. The Brazilian hopes to get back in the win column with his own fancy kicks, recovering his reputation as a lightweight contender. Middleweight Robert Whittaker vs. Rafael Natal Robert Whittaker may well have already begun his redemption story. The TUF Smashes welterweight winner came off as at least somewhat annoying on the show, but the young gun came out of the gate strong and put away noted awful tragic footnote in TUF history Colton Smith, earning instant admiration. He then went on a two-fight skid, losing to Court McGee and being finished by welterweight contender Stephen Thompson, who at the time seemed cool but unproven. Fans had all but given up on him, but he eventually moved up to middleweight and went on a tear, wrecking Clint Hester and Brad Tavares and then easily handling Uriah Hall. He is certainly someone to watch, and at 25 has seemingly limitless potential ahead of him. Can Rafael Natal redeem himself in my eyes for first tricking me into thinking he was a cool and good fighter by subbing Sean Spencer at my first live-and-in-person card, and then later tricking me into thinking Tim Kennedy was a cool and good fighter for knocking him the gently caress out? No. No he cannot. Featherweight Yair Rodríguez Vs. Andre “Touchy” Fili The inaugural TUF Latin America featherweight winner, Yair Rodriguez seeks redemption as a fighter who you you can remember despite having seen fight on several occasions. One of the last Team Alpha Male guys left, Touchy Fili seeks to redeem these Hot Topic gift cards he got for his birthday. In a food processor spin sugar about 2 minutes until it is superfine. Sift half of the sugar with the salt the cake flour, setting the remaining sugar aside. In a large bowl, use a balloon whisk to thoroughly combine egg whites, water, orange extract, and cream of tartar. After 2 minutes, switch to a hand mixer. Slowly sift the reserved sugar, beating continuously at medium speed. Once you have achieved medium peaks, sift enough of the flour mixture in to dust the top of the foam. Using a spatula fold in gently. Continue until all of the flour mixture is incorporated. Carefully spoon mixture into an ungreased tube pan. Bake for 35 minutes before checking for doneness with a wooden skewer. (When inserted halfway between the inner and outer wall, the skewer should come out dry). Cool upside down on cooling rack for at least an hour before removing from pan. Cook's Note: Since they're easier to separate use the freshest eggs you can get. I found out I have to go to Vegas tomorrow, and I'm staying at MGM. Will they have the event showing in the sportsbook? I've never been in Vegas during a PPV, much less been at the same hotel where one is going on.

Do the people who voted for Cejudo and OSP think they will win or just want them to? If you think they will win, how come? Genuinely interested!

I believe OSP will do a lot better than people around here think he will for a range of about two-thirds of a round to a round and a half, at which point he'll fail to KO Jones and tire out, and Jones will take over and do what everyone is expecting him to do.

Yeah, I think OSP will lose but look surprisingly good early on. I just hope Mighty Mouse decimates Cejudo because gently caress Henry Cejudo.

Really wishing Cejudo had a couple more fights under his belt and also fights that I could remember because they were largely boring at the time or I was very drunk. Maybe if there is a god OSP won't look like total poo poo and somehow make me think LHW division has hope. The other fights seem pretty neat though and I'm really looking forward to Pettis and Barboza. A little part of me thinks Barboza might put Pettis down but both guys are pretty drat good.

OSP recently lost very decisively to Texiera and Ryan bader so I dont know how him beating Jones would suddenly make the division better, unless better means back when a few very flawed guys would all trade the belt around rock paper scissors style for 1 fight at a time

I liked it when Machida was champ but overall I like the unassailable LHW champ. Ill give jones that he's matched chuck in that.

I think I'm ready to say Jones at his best was/is probably a little better than Chuck at his best. my opinion of chuck is he deteriorated a little bit expecting/chasing KOs right before his title reign began. but I think even really cautious chuck mightve lost a decision getting kicked at by jones. on the other hand I think he would have got a knock down. So maybe he would've won because chuck couldnt get a 5 round fight in his prime.

Barboza/Pettis is by far the most interesting fight on the card for me, because although Barboza's chin isn't great, his offense both in kicks and punching is way better than Pettis so I feel like he should really embarass him, but Pettis is also really good at setting up crazy kicking combinations so he could always hurt Barboza. It should be a really fun match. Chuck/Jones is an interesting question. At this point Jones has cleaned out his division just as well as Chuck did. On a head to head basis Chuck is actually a really bad matchup for Jones, but who knows how they would have actually matched up in their respective primes. I tend to think Chuck would have come out on top because of the way he was able to fight in his prime, but it's one of those unanswerable questions.

The wrestling/counterwrestling/counterpunching thing has always made Liddell/Jones an interesting thought experiment for me, but the point I always wind up hinging on is the reach; I'm pretty sure the only guy Chuck fought in his career he didn't have the reach advantage on was Overeem, and Overeem gave him hell until he remembered it was 2003 and crumpling like a wet paper bag was hip and cool. Fighting against the Jon Jones reach advantage and gas tank always seemed like a problem for Liddell's style to me.
