This is the forum where people unironically think Ken Levine is a white supremacist because they completely misunderstood Bioshock Infinite, what do you think?

All I've ever seen is people rightfully calling him a moron for handling racism with such utter incompetence that the game's message unintentionally became "The white supremacists were right."

If I remember the shitstorm correctly, the way B:I handled the Vox conflict in the latter half of the game was sharply at odds with the adversaries in the first half in a way that made a lot of people really uncomfortable. The Comstock loyalists in the first half were hostile, but not universally so (you had a lot of downtime and even a few people who tried to give you shelter amidst all the soldier-shooting), but as soon as Fitzroy gives the kill order in the Vox timeline, every single Vox instantly and permanently becomes hostile until the end of the game, all while they're cackling about stealing everyone's property and burning the rich in effigy. Then there's Fitzroy herself, a militant black civil-rights activist who, as soon as she gains power, literally smears blood over her face and prepares to cut a hitherto-unseen child's throat. It was astonishingly tone-deaf.

edit: basically, Levine wasn't called out as racist so much as way too dedicated to moral equivocation - he was so married to that tedious "truth is in the middle" schtick that he tried to put actual, historical slavers and bigots on the same moral level as the people they were enslaving, and it made the ending acts of B:I feel really unpleasant and inauthentic.

Agreed, but it was the implementation and execution that rankled people. Like I said, the good guy/bad guy switch for the Vox is literally denoted by all of your crosshairs turning from green to red after a single line from their leader, as if all of the Vox are mind-linked by some evil socialist telepathy, and at one point the main characters literally state that they're just as bad as their oppressors, like the game is trying to make the pill easier to swallow. Bioshock Infinite purported to be tackling Big Social Issues from the start, so it got put under a harsh spotlight when it started to make pratfalls like this (and more so when it tried to sneak away from the conceit entirely for a lot of metaphysical alternate-dimension nonsense in the very end).

Sounds about right. Revolutions often become bloody fanatical shitshows. See: France. I didn't see that action as vindicating Comstock, merely that violence and extremism are poisonous no matter who wields them. I think since a lot of people think they politically are sympathetic to the Vox, they are disturbed that the "good guys" would turn so viciously bad, but of all the things in Infinite that it doesn't so right, I thought that part worked fairly well.

Bioshock Infinite is a Dumb Game though.

Mass Effect Andromeda delayed to 2017, will be shown the week of E3

quote:

With Mass Effect™: Andromeda, our team at BioWare™ is exploring how far they can take this beloved franchise. Yes, we’re building the best of what we all love about Mass Effect – amazing stories, characters and fun third-person shooter combat – and bringing them along with us on the expedition to Andromeda. But we’re also excited to be introducing new features and ways you can enjoy a Mass Effect game.

• More Freedom: One of our biggest ambitions is to give players an unprecedented level of freedom for a Mass Effect experience –where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, and how you’ll play.

• New Uncharted Worlds: We’re leaving the Milky Way behind and headed to Andromeda, where we’ll meet new allies, confront new enemies, and explore fascinating new worlds.

• The Next Great Mass Effect Experience: Mass Effect: Andromeda will be the first Mass Effect game for today’s consoles and the first built on the Frostbite engine. We’re pushing the technology to deliver visuals, story, and gameplay that have never been done in franchise history.

As we’ve been playing the game at the studio recently, it’s showing us that we’re taking the game in the right direction. But we also know we need the right amount of time to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be – that’s our commitment from all of us to all of you. Because of that, Mass Effect: Andromeda will now ship in early 2017. We can’t wait to show you how far we’re all going to go. We’ll see you at the EA PLAY press conference on June 12, with an update.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Yeah, I was willing to stand up for the story in the base game to some extent despite all its flaws, but then the dlc made it clear that the entire thing was exactly as lovely and garbage as everyone thought it was.

And it dragged down BioShock 1 with it.

Isn't DA: Inquisition the template Bioware plans to base all games going forward on? If so, then I'd argue the "different."

I dunno, there's always that one game where nobody could get past the first level and the creator kept insisting the game was just really hard, up until someone went into the files and discovered that every level past the first was clearly a dummy file.

The Luteces apparently told Daisy that she had to induce suicide-by-Elizabeth in order to abolish her innocence so she'll have the courage to kill Comstock and I always knew it was stupid but it became even more so after I realized what I was typing halfway through this sentence.
