https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA5JpK_aFSk Oliver Stone's latest masterpiece has a full trailer out. It features the following brilliant artistic choices: -the NSA working out of a bunker full of glass walls and computery poo poo -a protagonist passing a test in RECORD TIME! -JGL doing a goofy imitation accent of a guy with a fairly unremarkable voice -motion graphics showing the internet as a series of screens, tubes, and flashing lights, The best element is boiling down Snowden's protest to be basically "The NSA is gonna watch you gently caress!" I get the feeling that you could just watch Last Week Tonight's bit on government surveillance and the Citizen Four documentary and be way more entertained and informed than watching this. But maybe for the sake of those people that have been living under a rock for the past 3-4 years and still have no idea who he is and what he did, making a movie about the government watching you go to the bathroom and making sexy time is worth it. Maybe in a way its like a really lovely looking version of The Big Short and Nicolas Cage is here to tell you it really happened!

To be fair, as according to the Last Week Tonight bit that Betty mentioned, this is what it takes to get a regular person to actually give a poo poo about a global surveillance state. On the one hand, this movie looks gorgeous and I am glad the story is being told and the American Government being the bad guy is a strange but kinda...true trend. On the other hand though this movie looks as subtle as a strip club and I do not look forward to my arm chair activist friends on Facebook talking about it. There's no reason for this movie to stick to the truth. For that, there's already the unbeatable Citizenfour. This one looks hammy as gently caress and it's going to be awesome.

That trailer does a really good job of making this movie look super both pretentious and like its typical over dramatized Hollywood dreck.

I keep forgetting that George W Bush movie was a thing. All I remember from that movie was Josh Brolin slo-mo choking on a pretzel.

IIRC Stone actually said it was a 'counter-myth' to the Warren Commisson 'myth', so it wasn't ever supposed to be accurate (although it still pissed off Mark Lane). The opening montage leading up to the gunshot is the best thing Stone has ever done imo

Everything since Rush To Judgement has probably pissed Mark Lane off, I'm sure he felt like Martin Luther nailing up the Theses when he wrote that book.

Really sad That might be his worst but even since then there's been interesting work. W. was fascinating and I'd never see Savages again but it had better action than most of its contemporaries. His films all have such an incredible, unique flow. He always overdoes it on the message front but the ride is always worth the price of admission.

While I like a lot of his films, he has absolutely terrible taste when it comes to style nowadays and can't keep his blowhard tendencies under control. Wall Street 2 has to be the dumbest screenplay I've ever seen produced, yet it really thinks it's speaking truth to power. The doc he directed, South of The Border, actually has a lot of really interesting points and observations, but it's completely undercut by him needing to film himself in a tan suit looking inquisitive after every goddamn bullet point. Snowden seems particularly bad because, as his past movies have shown, Oliver Stone doesn't really get the idea of the internet or modern media. After Bush, he's gotten pretty lazy when it comes to saying anything more than "The establishment sucks, man" and "Weed is cool," so I'm not expecting powerful new takes on intelligence and privacy.

LGD posted:Thandie Newton was so bad as Condoleezza though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVmVdOohAXg It's weird, because if Stone's intentions with W or Nixon was anything but humanizing them, thereby engendering more sympathy for them (well, not "them" so much as their Oliver Stone-y movie caricatures), he really dropped the ball.
