The 29-year-old man was taken to Peel Health Campus where he is in a serious condition.

Mandurah Mail reporter Nathan Hondros said it was a desperate scene when he arrived at the beach not long after the attack.

"The gentleman was on the beach by the time we got down here," he said.

"Ambulance crews were trying to resuscitate him by the looks of it. RAC rescue chopper came in yeah, so it was just quite desperate and heart wrenching scenes.

"He had lost a leg from what looked like above the knee, so it was quite a savage attack by the looks of it."
Shark species not yet known

Mr Hondros said it was unclear what type of shark was behind the attack.

"We had a talk to some of the surfers who were out there in the water with him, but look, they weren't in the mood to talk while their mate is in serious trouble," he said.

Mr Hondros said it was a popular surfing spot, and the attack had left the community reeling.

"There are a lot of kids who use the beach down here, they're all in shock. Their parents are down too so there's a lot of people who are really devastated."

"During the summer especially you see dozens and dozens of kids out here so it is quite worrying."

The City of Mandurah closed the beach and the Department of Fisheries has been advised.
