Welcome to the Something Awful Oath Thread! This is the thread for the SomethingAwful.com Oath Thread, a fun and engaging painting competition where the winner is YOU!

What is this 'oath thread' business, then?
The Oath Thread is aimed at miniature figure painters who are:
  • returning to the hobby after some time away
  • brand new painters
  • regular painters
  • wanting motivation to paint their piles of miniatures
  • interested in learning new painting & model techniques
  • looking for a chance to get great stuff for free!

The Oath Thread is primarily for wargamers of all types, miniature painters and model builders/sculptors, but anyone interested in painting a small version of something is welcome to participate! Because of its past history, the thread is mostly populated with fantasy & sci-fi gamers, and the prizes available reflect this.

How The Oath Thread Works
Each month, you can promise (or 'Oath') to paint a model or group of models. Post a picture of the exact model you're going to paint. By the end of the month, if you've finished painting that model, you may also win excellent FREE prizes from some of the top names in the wargaming industry!

That's really it. There are a few rules, such as how to format your oath and when you need to post your finished picture, but these will be laid out in this thread and on a publicly accessible wiki page so they'll be easy to find.

I’m an old-timer, I know all this stuff! What’s New This Time?
There’s a bit that’s new:
  • There are a couple of new Achievements
  • There are new/replaced Challenges and monthly Themes

If you haven't taken part in the past couple of Oath Threads, here are some new things to note:
  • The deadline to post new Oaths has been removed. Now, you can Oath any time right up to the very end of the month - but you must post your Oath Complete picture in a different post before midnight (still American Samoa time).
  • Themes for each month will be announced well ahead of time, so you can plan your models, conversions, etc., accordingly.
  • Usernames in Oath Complete pictures are now REQUIRED to earn points towards the year-end total.

How to Earn Points (and Prizes!)
Earning points is easy. Post a picture of your finished model(s) before the deadline and you earn points! (this is actually where you'll earn the bulk of your points) Complete the Challenge theme and you get more points. Put your user name into the picture of your model and you get another point. You get the idea!

If you do the theme and correct Oath and post finished pictures of your model on time, you'll earn 5 points in a month. There are other ways to earn points, however...and the top points-earners at the end of the Oath Season (at the end of April 2017) will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of awesome Grand Prizes!

Click here to see the current points totals: (link coming soon)

But remember!
Earning awesome prizes is a secondary goal of the Oath Thread. These are THE MAIN REASONS you should take part:

1. Be motivated to paint all those awesome models you've got stacking up
2. Get painting tips and advice
3. Share your awesome models with other awesome people
4. Have a chance to win cool prizes from great companies and wonderful people

These is just the basic info. See the next post for the simple guide to posting your oath and how you will claim points.

CLAIMING YOUR PRIZES
With any luck, you'll win some prizes! Either as a random prize draw (monthly or quarterly) or as one of our Grand Prize winners (approximately the top 10 participants on points).

From the time that you've been selected to win a random prize draw (monthly or quarterly), you will have TWO MONTHS to claim your prize, so please check the thread regularly to see if you've won. After this time, your prize will be put back into the available prize pool for other goons to win. There is a whole post below filled with links to the prize winners each month. Prizes are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you're late it's possible for someone whose name gets drawn after you to pick a prize before you.

The default method to claim any prize you may get is to EMAIL krushgroove at krushgroove169 at gmail.com. Please put 'Oath Thread Prize for (your username)' as the subject of your email. In the body of the email, provide your real name, postal address and prize choices. Finally, please see the Postage Costs section immediately below.

POSTAGE COSTS
Because most of the prizes are sent in one shipment from the sponsors, it generally falls to krushgroove (and Iris of Ether, the keeper of the US Grab Bag stuff) to pay for postage to places all around the world. By default, everything sent by mail will be by the cheapest option, without tracking. From the UK (where krushgroove is based) to the US, airmail packets take about a week to get to CONUS (CONtinental US).

However, if you want to chip in as a prize winner or you just want to help out, get in touch with krushgroove (krushgroove169 at gmail.com). With extra help I can pay for tracking to make sure you get your loot. It costs between £4/$7 to £7/$11 to send a prize out, depending on size and weight.

IF YOU'RE HAPPY TO WAIT FOR YOUR LOOT
Another way you can help is to defer your prizes until the end of the Oath Season. This is entirely optional but does help save a lot of money. Thread regulars did this in Seasons 5 and 6, and with the help of Gmail's email search function and threaded conversations it's easy to catch up with prize choices for various people.

:siren: HOW TO OATH YOUR MODELS :siren:

How to Oath your model:
1. You can post your Oath at ANY TIME of the month! However, your finished Oath must be posted by the deadline: midnight *AMERICAN SAMOAN TIME* (not Samoa! CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oathing and Oath Completion

2. Your model must be photographed out of its package and in one of these states:
2a. still on sprue, off the sprue and unassembled, partially assembled or fully assembled
2b. unpainted, primed or basecoated in a SINGLE color
2c. zenithal priming IS allowed, however pre-shading or picking out details is NOT allowed**

3. Go to http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ on your computer/tablet/phone, select AMERICAN SAMOAN TIME (or click this link) and take a picture of the oath model(s) beside the date and time on the screen. The time, date and location should be readable and the model should be recognizable. It’s hard to get everything in focus, but we must be able to count the models and if it's in multiple pieces we must be able to see all the parts of the model. Make sure the screen text (date and time) is READABLE and IN FOCUS before uploading your picture.

4. Upload your picture to http://www.imgur.com or any other publicly accessible photo-hosting site and copy the BB code link into your Oath post. (note: you can add your name to your Oath picture, but it isn't necessary)

5. Please also indicate what scale and brand of your figure(s) - this allows us to give helpful statistics to our prize sponsors.

6. Hit the ‘Reply’ link and put something like ‘I, [yourname], Oath that I will paint this [model name]’ - make sure this text is in BOLD so new Oaths are easy to find.

7. Hit the ‘submit’ button and get started painting! If you have any doubts about your Oath being accepted, wait until krushgroove approves it, or at least 24-48 hrs before starting to paint it.

8. Once your Oath is approved, your Oath is LOCKED IN and cannot be changed, only added to (see Oath Additions, below).

9. CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oathing and Oath Completion

*Why American Samoa? Because it gives everyone the opportunity to paint until late at night on the last day of the month (unless you are living right on the International Date Line) rather than having to finish in the morning or afternoon of the last day, which doesn't really work out well if you have a normal school/work day.
**zenithal priming: If you are in doubt, take a picture before you have primed the model (the safest and easiest option), or post a picture of your zenithal-primed model and ask. Pre-shading, which is not allowed for Oathing examples include panel lining on vehicles or shading on muscles, wings, etc. Anything can be done to the models after Oathing, of course.

Completing your Oath
1. Your Oath is 'complete' when YOU are happy with the paint job you've done. It doesn't need to be a masterpiece, just 'finished'. If you just want to get models painted for a board game (like Zombicide) you can do a quick basecoat + wash job and call them finished, or you can go all the way and do your absolute best. It's your choice.

2. Make sure you are posting before the end of the calendar month - remember we’re using *AMERICAN* SAMOAN TIME! CLICK HERE to see the deadline for Oath Completion

3. Don't miss out on the scoring! YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR USERNAME IN THE PICTURES YOU POST TO EARN POINTS. This is very easy: simply write your username on a piece of paper and make sure your name is clearly visible and readable in your photo. You can also add in your name with photo-editing software (online or otherwise). PLEASE NOTE that if you take lots of pictures of your model(s), it helps everyone if you include your username in every photo, especially if you finished several models or have different backgrounds in your photos. IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR USERNAME YOU WILL NOT EARN POINTS. If you're only participating to paint your stuff and/or win monthly/quarterly prizes, you'll still be eligible for those but you WILL NOT be earning easy points for the season-ending points totals.

4. Post ‘Oath Complete!’ with a picture your finished model or group (if you're posting multiple pictures, try to use the [timg] tag instead of the [img] tag so they don't take up huge amounts of screen space) - see below for where to get free image hosting and how to post the images

5. If you did either of the monthly Challenge, TELL US which one in bold

6. If you are claiming any Achievements , TELL US which one in bold and post whatever is relevant for that bonus

7. If you did anything else that should earn you bonus points, TELL US which one in bold

8. (Optional) Copy your post to the Miniatures Painting Thread and whatever other thread your fellow gamers post in (D&D, Malifaux, Battletech, Historicals, etc.) and encourage them to play, too!

:siren: EARNING EXTRA POINTS :siren:

It's easy to earn extra points in three different ways:
complete either of the monthly Challenges (either a Technical Challenge or a Theme Challenge)
complete any of of the many different Achievements
earn points from the Judges!

Challenges

Every month has its own theme, and every theme will have its own Theme Challenge and Technical Challenge related to the main theme. You only need to do one Challenge to earn your Challenge Point for the month. Doing both Challenges in a month will NOT give you extra points. Some months have alternate challenges for one or the other challenge, just choose whichever fits your needs/models/skills best and crack on! If you have any questions just ask.

May: WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS?!
technical challenge: paint a DRAGON! (if all you have is sci-fi/40K stuff, something that flies and shoots will substitute just fine) - you can also paint a DRAGON as a design on your model, whether it's a tatoo, freehand design or other bit of work!
theme challenge: paint anything with a fantasy theme! Basically, anything with chain or plate armor, furs, fur, sword and/or dagger

June: Summer’s here! Time to relax...
technical challenge: paint a model that is mostly skin - any color skin you like! The model (not counting weapon or base) should be at least 50-60% skin, so for example a Conan-style barbarian with tall boots, loincloth and bracers will probably count as at least 50% skin
theme challenge: paint a model that is relaxing in some way - either in a 'weapons down' sort of pose, not armed, actually relaxing, drinking, whatever, as long as it's not in a 'readied' stance!

July: Life's a beach!
technical challenge: use water effects of some type on your base, so that your model looks like it's just stepped out of the water - or it's just about to go in the water!
theme challenge: paint a model that is in some way related to water - it could be a mermaid, navy SEAL, fish, sharkman, boat, whatever you like!

August: Feeling hot! hot! hot! it’s the hottest time of the year!
technical challenge: OSL! Now it's time to PAINT a cool glow effect on your model! Fire, engine heat, glowing eyes, whatever you can think of
theme challenge: paint actual flames, smoke or something similar on your model

September: School's about to start - let’s celebrate the big yellow school bus!
technical challenge: paint a mostly YELLOW model! Yellow should be at least 50% of the model, or more. You should have shading, mid-tones and highlighting
theme challenge: paint a school bus-themed model! Alternatively, paint a model that has the classic math/science/geometry teacher stylings of tweed! Put plaid or tweed somewhere on your model

October: The month of horror movie releases and Halloween!
technical challenge: in the spirit of the "hidden threat" in classic suspense films (such as the mother/neighbor you'd never suspect, or the "evil twin"), paint a model with a very bright spotlight source of light! This is tricky because of the extreme brightness on one side of the model, and extreme darkness on the other side! Alternatively, paint a mostly BLACK model! Black should be at least 50% of the model, or more. You should have shading, mid-tones and highlighting
theme challenge: paint any type of scary monster, in any style you like! This can be something like Creature from the Black Lagoon, Alien, Cloverfield, a large doll, whatever!

November: Harvest Time! Oranges and yellows are the theme! ORRR go with Day of the Dead as your theme
technical challenge: your choice! paint orange and red leaves on your model OR paint some skulls (actual freehand paint 2D skulls, not just painted model skulls)
theme challenge: your choice! harvest time celebrations OR Day of the Dead (Google it)

December: Holly-Jolly Christmas-time, of course! (or Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Saturnalia or whatever) Red & Green, White or anything holiday-themed!
technical challenge: paint a mostly RED model! Red should be at least 50% of the model, or more. You should have shading, mid-tones and highlighting
theme challenge: something for the holidays, of course!

January: So C-C-Cold! it’s the middle of winter and my snot is frozen solid!
technical challenge: paint a mostly WHITE model! White should be at least 50% of the model, or more. You should have shading, mid-tones and highlighting
theme challenge: use snow effect type basing to enhance the cold effect of a model that is wrapped up for warmth

February: It's Oscar season!
technical challenge: in the spirit of Jerry Bruckheimer movies, let's see some explosions! Get creative, use OSL, zenithal type lighting and/or actual lighting!
theme challenge: paint a model that represents or is related to a movie (or TV show)! It doesn't have to be an actual model (e.g., you don't have to paint an actual Captain America or Superman model, but you can paint something in the Captain America or Superman theme & colors)

March: Spring is springing! It’s all GREEEEENNNN!!!
technical challenge: spring is about new beginnings, so take those old bitz and parts and make a model to paint! Yes, this is all about scratchbuilding and converting!
theme challenge: paint or model something on your model that represents new growth - it doesn’t have to be green necessarily, just representative of the theme of springtime

April: Kickin' it Old Skool!
technical challenge: paint a model in an 'old' painting style! Classic GW style with bright green rims? Perfect! Even better is if you can find a painting DVD or guide from way back when (we all have one kicking around, right?) and copy their (dated, limited) style as close as you can
theme challenge: paint the OLDEST model you have in your stack of models! Obviously we don't keep track of every model you have in your stack of unpainted models, but anything that is clearly 'old' will do

Australians - YOU guys only are specifically allowed to swap around the themes to fit your seasonal weather, for example: January - Summer Holidays; February - Feeling Hot; and so on. PLEASE NOTE if you are swapping monthly themes so we can track who did what months if necessary.

Achievements

Achievements are how you can earn bonus points during the year and have a bit of fun. You're welcome to do as many or as few as you like. Each Achievement is worth ONE POINT and can be claimed just once during the Oath Season, and you must complete your Oath to earn the point(s) for your Achievement. I'd recommend you pace yourself with the Achievements, as there's only so many to last you 12 months! If you have an idea for new/cool Achievements, let Krushgroove know in the thread!

Make sure to CLAIM your Achievements where necessary: when you post your Oath Complete picture, simply post in bold what Achievement you are claiming. Of course, Judgements don't need to be claimed.

Se7enth Heaven
Claim this Achievement the first time you complete your first Season 7 Oath! You don't need to claim this one, because any completed Oath means you've earned this one automatically!

Backstory
Write a character intro to make us laugh, then make us cry. Then make us laugh again! Why is your adventurer carrying two lanterns, a sack, 4 belt pouches, a backpack and 3 swords. No judging on the content, but extra internet points for making it entertaining in some way. Minimum 50 words. Post your backstory with your Oath Complete picture.

I rolled a 6!
...or a 20...or maybe an 01...Whichever is better for your chosen game. Create or paint markers, template, dice or some other gaming aid. Pretty up those translucent acrylic templates, custom-carve and/or paint some dice (yes you can get blank dice) or make some other game aid that you have to paint up. Just another way to customize your gaming experience! (To be clear, in this Oath Thread, Warmachine wreck markers are 'markers' and craters/wrecked vehicles for 40K are 'terrain'. We'll cross & burn the bridges for other markers/terrain for other game systems when we get to them!)

Box art
Copy the original paint scheme that the manufacturer used for your model. You must provide a link to the original artwork on the company's web page, in the company's product catalog (not web forums, etc.) to be counted. Post the link to the original box art with your Oath Complete picture.

Speed painting!
How fast can you paint one model? AFTER your oath is approved, take two pictures with the worldtimeserver.com website clearly in the background of your picture: one at the start of your painting session with your single-color model, and one at the end of your painting session with a completed model! The base does not need to be done to be called 'completed'. The time stamps on the worldtimeserver.com site must be within 24 hours of each other. No extra points for quickest painting time! That would be too hard to prove without video.

All for One!
At the end of Oath Season (at the end of April 2017), take a picture of ALL the models you've painted during the year, INCLUDING your April Oath (if you Oath a model during April). Include links to all your oaths (use the '?' button in any of your posts) plus a list of all the models you painted. You WILL be impressed with how much you've painted during the year!

Spring Cleaning!
Take a picture of your painting area, whether it's a laptop painting station, TV tray, desk or kitchen table. THE MESSIER, THE BETTER! A valid date stamp must be readable (you're allowed to take a wide picture of your table/whatever, and a closer picture of your phone/tablet/laptop with the current month's date stamp - your device showing the timestamp must be obviously on your painting area). Before the end of the month, you must completely clean, tidy and organize your painting area and post a picture of your newly refurbished and efficient hobby space! The idea of this Achievement is to clean up your hobby spot, so if you need to wait until you pile up dirty brushes and clipped-off plastic, so be it. Need an example of how to do this Achievement properly?

Apprentice
Complete 3 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Journeyman
Complete 6 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Expert
Complete 9 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Master
Complete 12 Oaths during the Oath Season.*

Note: The Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Master Achievements stack with each other, so if you complete 12 oaths you will get an extra 4 points, but if you only complete 11 oaths you will get 3 points.

NEW FOR SEASON 7!
#SquadGoals
paint a minimum of 4 related models in a month (or 3 28mm bike-size models or equivalent, or 2 28mm vehicle-size models or equivalent) - models must be related in some way, whether a tactical marine squad, Blood Bowl/Dreadball/Guild Ball team, group of Frostgrave adventurers or monsters, pack of gnolls or orcs to attack player characters, or something like that.

WIP Photos
show a minimum of 3 Work In Progress photos of your model(s) after the Oath picture and before your Oath Complete picture (for a total of 5 photos

It's a Rescue!
Earn an additional point for Oathing a model that's been neglected, half-painted and waiting to be completed. Tell us the story of why you've left this forlorn model by the wayside, and why you've picked this one to finish. You can only claim this Achievement for models NOT Oathed in Season 7. Models from Season 6 or earlier are allowed, but models don't have to be from previous Oath Threads. When initially Oathing this model, state clearly that you are rescuing it. THIS IS THE ONLY MODEL YOU'RE ALLOWED TO OATH WITH MORE THAN ONE COLOR OF PAINT IN PLACE. Please note! This is separate and distinct from Save da Whales. Save Da Whales is a separate thing with its own rules, and importantly applies only to Oaths failed in Oath Season 7.

Referral Bonus
To encourage new and past members to join us, YOU have been deputized - and you can win a fantastic prize! Bring in a new participant, or encourage a previous Oath Thread participant who Oathed 3 or less times in any single Oath Season from #4, #5 or #6 (I have access to the spreadsheets going back that far) to join us in our monthly painting endeavors! For each new or returning person who posts 3 Oaths during Season 7 (up to the end of April 2017), you will earn one entry in a prize draw at the end of the Season featuring something awesome from one of our prize sponsors! All your referred goon needs to do is say "goon BLANK referred me' in their first Oath post and we'll take care of the rest!

Judge's Decisions

Yes, this is a painting competition as well as a way for you to knock down your painting backlog - you can earn points for being any judge’s top 3 pick. We have 3 judges and they’ll each be rewarding points each month as follows:

1st place : 3 points

2nd place : 2 points

3rd place : 1 point

Best Challenge (must be the current month’s Journal): 1 point

So, yes, you can earn up to 13 POINTS in one month if you do things right and really impress the Judges!

We’ll once again use The Bachtere Clause MkII: Anyone who receives 1st or 2nd place from a particular judge will only be eligible for points for 3rd place the next month from that judge, but can earn Best Journal points from any of the judges. An oather may receive points for Best Journal from more than one judge during a month.

Questions & Announcements Post

Consider this the FAQ post for the thread. Questions about specific monthly Challenges will be in the post for that month (see the Challenges post above)

Thread announcements will also be in this post rather than being buried in the thread.

malal posted:

One more question, what happens if you fail the oath? Mocking? Slannesh avatar? The hatred of your fellow oathers? Must shave head like a slayer due to your wronged honor? Can only post in the Star Citizen thread for one month?
You've been answered on this already but just to confirm, there is no terrible penalty for failing an Oath - actually no penalty at all, apart from losing your potential points for that month. This is part of the inclusivity of the Oath Thread. We did try doing avatars for some of the people that failed their Oaths, but they had to opt in, because some people like their avatars, but then some people were looking forward to getting Oath Failed! avatars, which becomes a reward for failing, which is kind of weird. I'd like to figure out some way to offer new avatars to people who complete their Oaths, but can't think of anything that is manageable and also doesn't burn out the artists that want to make them.

No - you don't have to wait for approval unless you're unsure for some reason, or have a question that your Oath won't be approved. Please go ahead and start painting, if there's anything questionable I'll post in the thread and *maybe* ask for another picture, and even then usually whatever progress you've made will be fine. Generally this is not a problem at all. Go ahead and start!

malal posted:

I can oath as many times a month as I like, as long as they are all completed by the due date? as an addendum to that, assuming I can complete multiple oaths in one month, do you need to complete at least one a month to get the "master" achievement?
Yes, you can Oath as many times as you like in the thread, but weirdly your Oath 'count' resets when you do an Oath Addition. This is a relic of the old way of Oathing from before I took over, but in its own way it adds a gambling element to your Oath: you can add as much stuff as you like to your Oath, even after you've completed your Oath, but will you finish before the end of the month? If you don't, you lose your points! If you do...all you do is get the same number of points you would have gotten for doing a single model. So in keeping with the laid-back-yet-stressful-only-if-you-make-it-stressful ethos of the Oath Thread, you can go all the way from Oathing a single model and coast through the month, to Oathing multiple groups of models one after another and pushing yourself to complete a huge batch job, at the risk of losing all your Oath points that month.

The 'misting' sounds like they are zenithal painted, you can always post a picture ahead of time or as an Oath to confirm. If you do a Google Image Search for 'panel lining', that is explicitly not allowed, as you noted.

"malal"can you complete multiple challenges/achievements within the same oath, or do they need to be separate oaths? [quote="malal"]for the "It's a rescue!" challenge, can a heavily converted model or scratch-build that is half built but unprimed count, or does it need to be a pure "paint" rescue?
This sounds to me like it's not a 'rescue' in the sense of the Achievement...this sounds like a model that was left to collect dust before paint was applied. The idea of the Achievement is to finish painting a half-painted model, but if you can justify the Achievement for that model with a story of why it's been left behind, go for it! The key goal of this thread is to motivate people to build & paint their models, so if this Achievement helps you do that, go for it!

I remember having a set of terrain oathing rules the first or second thread that I organized, but at the time we were still using the specific sizing rules that included something like 5 30mm Space Marines being the 'standard size' for the Oaths, and that led to the terrain rule being quite complicated because of the different scales and types of terrain! In recent years I've simplified things quite a lot to where you can literally have just a single model of any scale being your Oath, so you can paint any kind of model, including terrain, for your Oath if you like. There's nothing stopping you! :)

With summer coming up and yard work season in full effect, it might be worth doing a single-month competition that's focussed on terrain, though. If you terrain dudes want to come up with a simple set of rules that will work across all scales of terrain we can get something going. I can toss in a new bag of flock or something (it'll be cheap to post, too!) and I'm sure some other guys will be able to chip in. Uhoh-- I got carried away finishing the bases on some old models and accidentally put down a base layer on some models I meant to oath next month... does this disqualify then? Or does it not matter since the rules on bases are so vague?
As someone said in reply to your question, the basing rules are purposefully vague because there are a few games now that use clear bases, plus flying bases for games like X-Wing, Dropzone and Dropfleet Commander, etc., confuse the issue. So in the last couple of Oath Seasons you can literally just ignore basing completely, even to the point of a plain black plastic base if you want. It won't earn you any kudos from the Judges, but for the purposes of keeping track of what game everyone is painting for it's much simpler for our purposes.

GoodBee posted:

Can we post our half finished crap along with our oaths? Not for points but so we can feel shame when we don't finish? We can use Not an Oath.
For your own motivation or whatever please feel free to post pictures of any of your models at any stage in the painting thread, but just to keep things clear for the purposes of judging, etc., try to keep just models that are being Oathed and Completed Oath models in this thread.

Shachi posted:

It's basically points per oath, not model, correct? And that's one oath per month?

The reason I'm asking is I hope to get a lot done next month. I've had approx 30 models additionally sitting around that I promised a friend I would paint and I've been sitting on them for almost two months so I plan to get them knocked out by the end of June. I guess I should oath the whole lot I plan to do then or do it in chunks?
It's points per Oath, and one Oath can be anything from 1 model to infinity models. If you're purely going for the satisfaction of painting your models, feel free to Oath in chunks, doing a handful of models at a time. This is a little more work for Zark, as he'll have to edit your entry for the month each time you do an Oath Addition, but if it makes it easier for you that's OK. Just be aware that your earned Oath points are 'reset' each time you do an Oath Addition! You can go whole hog and Oath all 30 or so models you have to make it more of a challenge, so you have the option of Oathing however you like, there are advantages and disadvantages for either way.

chutche2 posted:

Too bad, I would've painted up my Archidon if I knew about this before. Going to try to participate in the June oath, whatever that will be.
June's Challenge is already in the OP - in fact ALL the challenges are listed well ahead of time, to allow you to get the model, paint, materials, etc., you might want for any particular month.

:siren: May: WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS?! :siren:
technical challenge: paint a DRAGON!

I'm happy to report that Mr. Green will be guiding you all through the Oath Thread this season, thanks to some awesome webcomics done by goon moths and his wife! Uroboros posted:

Would a Dreadnaught count for this month's theme? Biggest thing I've got to paint for my Marines.
If you're going for the Technical Challenge (dragons), no. Unless it's got wings or something. (the idea behind the techinical challeng is that wings are big and hard to paint for some with all the blending and large curved areas). However, if you're going for the Theme Challenge, which is fantasy, if you have something like furs, chainmail, armor, sword, etc., on the model, it counts for the Theme Challenge. So by default the dreadnought with its standard armor will work*, but if it's a Space Wolf dreadnought it works even better because of the furs and stuff that Space Wolves have.

* I realize a space robot is not very 'fantasy' but again there are many, many different games and settings represented in the Oath Thread, and we've made a big effort in the past few years to NOT exclude a particular game setting just because of its aesthetic, so on many things I'm quite lenient - if in doubt, just ask! The advantage is lots of people get to take part no matter what kind of game they play, the disadvantage is there are always questions about what is allowed and what's not :)

Would keeping track of oaths and achievements be easier if there was some unique code associated with them that you'd put in your poast? Like the May oath would be as simple as MAYS7 and the 6 pack would be 6PACKS7. Then you're only a find function away from all the poasts.

If someone wants to work that out, it'd be pretty awesome, but we're in the stone ages here with manually putting links and points in the spreadsheet.

:siren: July Terrain Painting Awesomeness!! :siren:

Germ posted:

I was planning on sponsoring such a thing already, so....

Would July-ke to paint some terrain, my Lord?

For the month of July, include some terrain in your oath to get entered into a special prize drawing. Any scale will do, but it should be suitable terrain, not just a scenic objective marker, unit filler, or the like. You can gain multiple entries in the drawing (up to 4 including the original entry) by:

Epic: Painting a "sufficiently epic" amount of terrain. This could be a single large, complicated piece, or a number of smaller pieces that go together. One huge castle. A village. A table's worth of terrain. If you think what you did was epic, say so. If I agree, you'll get a bonus entry.

Picture Time: Take a photo of your terrain being used in a game, or as part of a scene with other miniatures you have painted for another bonus entry.

Rules Lawyer: Write a short set of rules for a terrain feature you oathed. The rules can be for any system, but should allow you to use a piece of terrain you painted in a unique way during a game. Toxic sludge that emits poisonous fumes? Tavern that can distract nearby troops with promises of ale?

The winner of the prize draw will get a selection of resin terrain from Worldsmith Industries. I'll work out with the winner the specifics of what they want, but expect something in the range of $75 worth of terrain. Anything on the we store would be fair game, as would anything I've prototyped but is not yet available for public sale.

lilljonas posted:

Now, I'm all about paying it forward. So, I'll be throwing my hat in for Garm's awesome terrain month:

My hobby side-project, Mura Miniatures, will also add prize support to the July terrain bonanza. If you don't win Garm's prize, you'll get a chance at a runner-up prize:

A gift voucher for your online hobby store of choice, at the value of 20 USD

or

A custom made piece of terrain, made by myself, in whatever scale and theme you want

Note that I'm not really a sci-fi gamer, so I have limited experience with making sci-fi stuff, but I'll give it a shot if you want. :) The rules for qualifying are exactly the same, except that the first prize winner is not eligible for the runner-up draw.

Yeah it'd have to be a random draw but not only would people have to opt-in, the artist(s) would need to have a stockpile of ready avatars. The last time we did this it was pretty taxing on Pierre and no matter what you think at the start of the year, by about halfway through there's a wait to get artwork and real life takes precedence. So I'll let the guys that want to draw stuff step forward if they want, and if we can get enough artwork together I'll see what we can do, but there's a big spread of variables that needs to be overcome first.

RE: the Oathbreaker avatars, I agree that they're fun but as Lord Hypnostache says:

Lord Hypnostache posted:

While I wouldn't mind seeing more silly avatars, I prefer the current more inclusive and chill atmosphere in the Oath thread, where there is not really any penalty for failing an oath.
The early Oath Threads were very...difficult for me to get involved in as a painter, it was like joining up the SA forum as a total noob: lots of rules, so much happening and if you messed up because you didn't know some obscure rule you could be punished harshly or ignored, and you didn't know which. All credit to the guys that got the Oath Thread going, but the current vibe in the thread is now friendlier and more open I think, and hopefully longtime Oathers can back me up on that.

In several months, yes, I'll be a bit burnt out and busy and wrapped up in things and yes people will stop Oathing every month (it'd be great to have a newsletter to keep people informed and interested!) but the vibe doesn't change. The rules can be daunting but I've tried my best to write them in an open and inviting way for new foks to feel they can join in without biting their nails about their Oaths.

I'm going a bit off track now but to me the concept of penalizing someone with an avatar is a bit harsh (although, yes, I know this is SA and that happens here but only when you annoy too many people for too long - for not painting a tiny model I think it's harsh). Further to that, rewarding participants for failing just goes against what I think the Oath thread should be.

So unless there's a revolt or I'm voted down, I would rather give avatars to Oathers who complete their Oaths, not for those who fail their Oaths. Again, the whole point of the Oath thread is to paint your stacks of plastic crack, not to fail at doing that.

My proposal for new Oath avatars is for every month to offer one or two avatars to Oathers who complete their Oaths (and have opted in to get an avatar, because many people like their avatars), and for an avatartist (see what I did there?) to give them an Oathkeeper avatar. This could be Pierre (whose avatars you can see in this very thread), SRM (he of Dawn of Awesome fame), grassy gnoll or anyone else handy with Photoshop and armed with a sense of humor and some photos of badly painted models. Hell, I'd say even myself and Zark (if he wants) would be eligible for the avatar, I'm due a new one anyway (we are not otherwise eligible for prizes or points).

Thoughts?

Sorry guys! Been super busy since Saturday, went to Warhammer Fest, uploaded videos and pictures and all sorts of things, and since then have been knackered since I started playing squash (that's racquetball for my fellow Americans) and badminton one day each a week!

As I've said before, don't worry if I'm not able to get to your Oaths immediately, I try to check in a couple times a week, and more often early in the month and times like now, in the beginning of a brand new season!

It's great to see a bunch of new and familiar names joining up - even if you're not going for max points to get some of the Grand Prize loot at the end of the year, you do get points for completing 3, 6, 9 and even 12 Oaths, so I hope you all stick around right to the end!

I'll be Oathing soon, too...I've pre-primed a ton of Zombicide miniatures just for the Oath Thread, so at the risk of having to eat my breakfast out of a toilet or something:

Still, kitbashed the wide-grilled fellow on the other side with fur, chain, axe and sword, so I can try for the fantasy theme. He was fun to make, as well!

Someone replied to this already - for your own motivation or whatever please feel free to post pictures of any of your models at any stage in the painting thread, but just to keep things clear for the purposes of judging, etc., try to keep just models that are being Oathed and Completed Oath models in this thread.

Well you claim an Achievement when it's achieved, like Speed Painting or whatever, so on that basis you can claim a Rescue on a future model that you rescue. I hadn't thought about applying both It's a Rescue! and Save Da Whales to the same Oath, but I suppose it can be done. The intent of It's a Rescue, though, is to rescue a model that was half-painted and completely forgotten, but we're not mind-readers here so you can apply it to whatever you like, as long as it fits the criteria of a rescue.

...aaannnd...BRUSHES DOWN!

Your time is up for posting your May Oath Complete pictures!

And here is your Challenge for JUNE!
Summer’s here!

This month's Mr. Green comic, using the themes of relaxing as well as showing some skin!

Here's how much time you have for Oathing this month: https://oath-countdown.appspot.com/

So while everyone's attention is coming back to the thread, a few things!

1. CONGRATULATIONS for taking part, and especially to those of you that finished your first Oaths for Season 7!

2. Are there any takers on OATHKEEPER avatars from anyone in the thread? I'm looking at you, SRM, PierretheMime, grassy gnoll, moths and thousandcranes? Post about this a while back, basically the idea is to give a avatar to one person every month who completes their Oath, so I only need 12 avatars.

3. Are there any takers for a FORFEIT if I fail to complete an Oath every month this season? I posted about this a while back as well but no one replied.

Fuegan posted:

Oh no, I wasn't intending to add It's a Rescue to a Save Da Whales. I wanted to check I hadn't wasted my It's a Rescue on a model I didn't finish is all. Then again, it feels a bit cheeky to enter a model I tried to rescue into Save Da Whales and then use It's a Rescue on a new oath, you know?

Yeah, like I said RAI (Rules As Intended) It's a Rescue! is supposed to be for forgotten minis, not failed Oaths. I'll amend the rules for that actually so no one can double-dip and make it a bit clearer.

LATEST PHOTO ALBUM!!
for MAY:
Google Photos: https://goo.gl/photos/9AVDTvpN1jK7xaBFA
Imgur: http://imgur.com/a/zCvPI

Everyone please check to make sure that your Oath Complete photos are in both albums. Since you just uploaded your pictures you should be able to recognize your models!

I uploaded the same photos into both locations but you never know. I may have missed someone or something may have happened, so just please check. I think we have an actual record of photos to be uploaded, usually there's way less than 200 photos to upload and this time there are 249 photos! So...great job, all of us! Loads of new recruits, loads of returning old-timers and very few people weren't able to complete their Oaths. Let's keep it up, and if you failed your Oath, don't worry, just pick up the brush and Save Da Whales!

Also, I just wanted to add a couple of things that I'll be putting in the OP rules:
1. If you add your name to your photos (remember you don't get points for missing names) please put your name in every photo - I do my best to put photos with names in my download folder first, then add your other photos, but Google Photos doesn't allow me to rearrange albums by name any more, so photos will get mixed around.
2. I'm no longer adding names to photos using photo editing software at my end - if you don't want to write your name on a bit of paper or add your name using the info in the OP that's on you, and you won't get points. The no name, no points rule has been around at least since the start of Season 6, so it should be pretty engrained now for you regulars, and for anyone new or joining up again after a long time away it shouldn't make a difference. I don't think the folks who left off their names are going big for judge's points but wanted to be clear I won't be editing pictures any more.

All good! I'm going to pay a bit more attention to the Box Art stuff this time around, I don't think anyone abused it in the past but I kind of

just let it go without actually having a close look at the finished work.

I'm hoping the Brute Thralls will qualify for this month's technical challenge--they aren't even wearing pants, let alone a shirt!
Yep! Just don't concentrate on painting their junk too much. Unless that's your thing.

Uroboros posted:

I, Uroboros, oath a Librarian in Terminatorarmor. I've also got a Terminator Captain in the picture but

I only have ten days to paint this so I figured I'd focus on one. I plan on going the extra mile by following the 'eavy metal guide step by step

and then compare it to my normal steps for the Captain and see how much of an improvement I can make.
Sounds like a plan!

rkajdi posted:

I, rkajdi, oath for the month of June a House Vyre Myrmidon kit from Privateer Press.

Holding off on my inevitable Fats Dominar submission until I get another heavy myrmidon done for the MKIII release.

glitchkrieg posted:

Completely missed my last oath, partly due to a death in the family, the resulting funeral and a well-timed

So here's my June oath, and I'm hoping to actually do it this time, as it should be pretty easy.

I, glitchkrieg, oath for the month of June, 5 Terminators from River Horse Studio

Primed black with white zenithal.

And if I don't fail to get those paint another I'll probably post another.
Ouch! Seems like you need to do some painting to help forget all that...

Manchaaaaaaa Rojaaaaaaaa!

tallkidwithglasses posted:

Ok posting a couple WIP photos to contribute for the achievement. The finger is definitely annoying, but it isn't stopping me from anything so

far. I haven't gotten to the fine detail though.

I started by airbrushing some cardboard to see what it'd be like to work with a splint.

I broke my ring finger, so I have my usual paintbrush-holding fingers available, but the splint has been occasionally getting in the way of

things, I can't really grip as firmly as usual and it gets sore over time or if I brace against it.

Silver on the bikes:

Base coat and broad highlight:

Wash and a little attempted cleanup:

I'm also planning to be more proactive about approving/commenting on WIP photos and other Achievement things, such as: 'Yep, looks good!' rather

than making Zark be the one to decide if it's acceptable or not. In this case, yep, looks good! You get the Achievement :)

He's got a lot of flesh, but I'll be oathing other outcast figures with even more flesh later in the month, this model is to test out the flesh scheme. Lord Hypnostache posted:

I, Lord Hypnostache, oath one Vampire chilling on some stairs. GW 28mm. Technically it's not a complete model, but a piece of the coven throne, but my hobbytime this month is severely limited, so there's no way I'd be able to finish the whole model, that things is huge.

Just a note here guys and gals, the general Miniatures Painting thread is here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3705692 for your detailed questions, how-to posts, step-by-step posts and whatnot, also of course the various game threads for 40K, Guild Ball, Malifaux, etc. I don't want to discourange anyone from posting their WIP stuff here (and of course for the WIP Achievement it's required to do so!) but I just want to be careful we don't get inundated with too many WIP pics :)

Some news and announcements to come real soon!
