Played a super tall maya game with the barbarian mode and dang were there a lot of barbarians. It really slowed me down a lot on the early game dealing with three different tribes sending swarms of units (with one getting voi cheins and the other getting samurai) that it was a race to make sure poundmaker, who had thrice my science for most of the game, didn't win a space victory first. A combination of hercules, industrial projects, and burning down his spaceports delayed him enough for me to get the exoplanet expedition out first and then just spending all of my favor and money to keep buying all my ally's aluminum until I won.

I kept one at by through bribery and buying their coursers. I was rewarded with full suzerentiy of geneva, which was totally worth it. I was trying to cultivate another tribe on a small isthmus but the nearby city state didn't agree and dispersed the camp (I shouldn't have gotten greedy trying to pump money out of it. Its only ever 35 gold so at a certain point its more worth it to disperse it for the xp or sit on it defending it until it becomes a city state).

Seriously, these are 100% barb kills. I didn't go to war once (on a small continent with a friendly philip and mvemba)

I made the most useless city state spawn for fun. A barb camp was in the bottom corner of the map on an Inland Sea, with a mountain nest to it, so it only had a couple of snow tiles and the mountain. It was Kandy, and started on a holy site. I have no idea how long it will take to finish that, I stopped the game a little after.

I gave in and bought the Vietnan pack, my first "season pass" DLC, to try the monopolies and corps thing

Im not sure if I understand it yet, but inst kinda weird that we can build those from the beggining of the game? I thought it would be available only after the industrial era or something

Also, what the heck is a "Preserve" and why I can I build it? Im playing Vietnan, its description says nothing about it

Dear diary, I got another erection today at work. SO embarrassing, but kinda hot. The CO asked me to fix up his dress uniform. I had stayed late at work to move his badges 1/8" to the left and pointed it out this morning. 1SG spanked me while the CO watched, once they caught it. Tomorrow I get to start all over again...
A preserve increases tile appeal of unimproved tiles around it. It’s buildings then increase tile yield of charming and breathtaking tiles.

You can build industries with the same tech that allows you to build commercial districts. Corporations come later.

It was a new district added with Vietnam/Kublai pack, and yes, anyone can build it. I haven't got the hang of them yet, mostly because I prefer clear cutting everything and bringing climate apocalypse.

It seems like they're good for putting on the periphery of your city and/or culture bombing enough mountain squares to eventually make a national park.

I'd love to see the ability to create a national park out of non-mountain tiles in the future, either generally or as a specific civ function. I never make them otherwise

you don't need mountains for a national park, just four unimproved land tiles with charming or better appeal in a vertical diamond owned by the same city. easy to so with planting forests, placing districts/wonders. in fact they're technically better for tourism since a mountain is capped at appeal 4, whereas regular tiles there is no cap.

I had a few 10-appeal tiles in my Bull Moose Teddy game where I abused Preserves as much as I could.

Is there a fix for the bug where you can't end the turn because you can't fill policy slots because you don't have policies to put in them?

I can't change governments, I can't do nada. So close to the end, too. :(

I don't understand, how does this situation even happen?

The bug is just that your policy cards disappear?

I know you should have more than one wildcard policy available at this point, but you are still filtering by wildcard. Try not filtering to see if more show up.

Also, you can put any policy in the wildcard slot, not just wildcard policies.

Well even then, how do you not even have other wildcards you could use? Like, you should have the +2 great scientist and the +2 great general etc available

Weird civics path and/or the tech/civic shuffle option, perhaps?

I am not good with culture most times. I've only ever had culture victories way late in the game.

With Vietnam I accidently win with culture and end up with only 1000 or so score. Elephant archers own and the defense bonus is shockingly good. I thought Gaul was great but man Vietnam just owns.

Tech/civic can give you some wierd paths but i don think it will give you a path to a govt without having enough policy cards , since it seems to favor having a limit of three "paths"

I think those cards are removed once obsoleted by all the great people of that type being recruited? It could have happened by turn 450, very long game.

Also looks like no expansions. Were there just fewer wildcards in the base game. Certainly no legacy cards.

I'm gonna have to play a corporations game with culture turned off. The game ends long before I can do anything interesting with my products.

I really like the new Barb mode, not only for the ability for them to turn into city states, but it also signficiantly changes barb camp spawning and makes different barbs feel distinct. Its not nearly as game changing as a lot of the other modes, but its a huge QOL improvement

Good old skeleton snowball.

If you're looking for that fix give Age of Wonders: Planetfall a go. Heroes leading armies, and there's a couple different strategies that have that same vibe.

Maybe a mode that replaces late game barb camps with zombies that somehow scales strength based off the nearest city could be interesting. I'm not really seeing a way that a zombie plague could be outright implemented in an interesting way though. Also it seems like a really tone-deaf time to release global pandemic mode for a game so hopefully it's just some achievements for Red Death.

I enjoyed AoW3, how does Planetfall compare in your opinion? The Steam reviews where very lukewarm, and I side-eye anything from Paradox nowadays, even if they're just publishing rather than in-house developing.
