Alternatively, as Civ VI is apparently the opposite of Civ IV, a backwards version of Baba Yetu should play in the menu. Utey Abab. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nF3Tgnvf-6U

Why don't they bring back Baba Yetu? Opening Civ 4 for the first time made me feel awesome and ready to forge a civilizatuon in my image.

A Canadian Civ is totally workable and there's a really good one for Civ V. The UA is unique (+1 delegate per declaration of friendship) and really carves out a niche for carebear diplomacy and expansionism.

Harmonia posted:Civ VI will have less technologies, around 50, but it will be "compensated by some system they can't talk about yet." There's 81 in Civ V: BNW so that's a pretty significant cut. Maybe they're going to use some "leaf" system like BE did? Would make sense that they'd borrow some ideas from that game.

majormonotone posted:As someone with ADHD I could not actually parse Beyond Earth's tech web so hopefully they make it significantly more readable On the other hand, the tech web is perhaps my single favorite thing about Beyond Earth (and I say this as someone who thinks it's one of the best entries in the Civilization-and-spinoffs franchise). I don't, however, think it works as well for a mainline historical Civilization game unless they're going for a more traditionally linear tech tree that also incorporates leaf techs off the linear stems.

Why not? Technological development as a deterministic linear thing is considered pretty outmoded these days, it'd be cool if we can get a game where you could have Mesoamerican and Andean civs poo poo on Europe from an agricultural and textiling perspective and not be considered "behind" in the same way because of their lack of iron. It'd be cool if there are multiple ways you could progress your civilization. e: conversely I agree about it having been confusing as all gently caress in Beyond Earth, but now they have the A-team working on it we might get a better UI.

No one touches Civ4 unless it has BtS installed as well, Civ3 with Conquests is better than Civ4 vanilla. Civ5: BNW is how the game should have been originally released though, I think it's a better game than Civ4:BtS although I am the minority.

For those who are interested, last March was Civ's twenty fifth birthday and the strategy game podcast Three Moves Ahead had Jon Shafer (lead dev on Civ V) and Soren Johnson (lead dev on IV) on to talk about the series. If you're a fan it is pretty interesting! Good parts include a giant hate-on for espionage mechanics and Shafer talking about how V was conceived as a test bed for new mechanics after IV "perfected" the old formula started by II.

sarmhan posted:Civ 4 religion wasn't very interesting either. It was a rather convulted way of maybe getting a bunch of gold. Civ V's religion has way more going on, although as with everything I'll be interested to see how they tweaked it for VI. Phobophilia posted:Civ4 religion was a diplomatic tool in SP. It was a cool way to form blocs and alliances. Civ5 religion was just a big perk tree and just a pile of gold, if you were lucky and the AI Boudicas didn't roll their belief pick on tithe. Civ4 religion was pretty deep in single player. It is an interesting diplomatic tool, but it also had a huge place in cultural victories because of cathedrals giving 50% culture. Typical strat would be to get as many religions as possible to build a bunch of temples so you could stack cathedrals in your 3 culture cities. Religion was also deep in the civic system, with Organized Religion/Theocracy/Pacifism all providing very powerful bonuses if adopted. Going religion first also let you bypass monuments for early border pops, and maybe get a shrine for gold. Civ5 religion is way less interesting given that it's just a carbon copy of the policy system, with the same process of filling a bucket to select a bonus. That's without even considering how OP some of the bonuses like Desert Folklore or whatever are, or thinking about late game religion where you have to generate ever more faith just to keep the dominant religion.

Budzilla posted:Just like Civ4 and Civ3. What the hell is this? Conquests was an absolute disaster. It destroyed the corruption mechanic (both in calculating the costs, and with the civil engineer specialist), added awful OP lethal bombardment, broken rear end Statue of Zeus needing Ivory (a luxury resource that would only have like 4 copies in the world, because of the civ3 map gen) and giving the ridiculously powerful Ancient Cavalry Same thing with BTS. Do you remember how colony expenses were calculated at release? Do you remember how awful the poison well or civil unrest spy abilities were? How the game was completely broken on Epic difficulty? How broken Corporations (Sid's Sushi especially) were? Statue of Zeus (increasing war weariness to the point that the game wasn't fun). Civ4 at release was buggy (memory leaks) and had overly powerful units (redcoats, cossacks, and catapults could still kill at release), but it was a hell of a lot better on release than either of those expacs.
