I'm wondering if the reason this pack is underwhelming is because most of the team is now on Civ 7.

I think it's also possible that leaders generally all THAT impressive compared to new civs, which tend to be where the bulk of gameplay modifiers come from, and I just forgot about that. Unfortunately they started off this $20 pack by giving boring alternatives to existing interesting leaders and then fumbled the rollout. Luckily this is free for a lot of people.

they could really have leaned into the alternate leaders more by dovetailing leader and civ abilities more. e.g. a civ that gives bonus science, and then one leader that converts bonus science into faith and another that lets you spend science to spawn units or something. Idk, get creative!

Instead they didn't so I just play whatever leader I think look cutest.

Looking forward to trying a game with Theodora, but other than that I'm meh on the whole pack

Its kind of funny that lincoln's ability is way better if you play with vanilla rules (extra amenities instead of loyalty)

new saladin, especially if you get crusade, is basically a "win war" button it's a lot of fun

Yeah, I'm guessing that Civ 7 was taking longer than they anticipated (likely pandemic-related delays in development), so they needed to throw something out to tide people over.

I think Julius Caesar might be the worst offender in the game, so far, for "leader that looks nothing like their real-world historical figure". I mean, surely anyone with a passing interest in history has seen a bust of Julius Caesar, or a coin bearing his profile, or something? Did it even occur to the animators to google up a reference?

If you mean Civilizations Expanded (my favorite mod) then I checked already and the dev says they're going to update it.

I'm not history buff, but a quick google gives me this:

which seems reasonable.

I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.

:psyduck: they look nothing alike

julius caesar (real) has a thin pointy nose with a prominent bridge, high prominent cheekbones, a thin jaw with a wide-ish mouth, flat-ish ears, and wavy/curly hair that is combed forward over his probably receding hairline.

julius caesar (civ 6) has a wide flat-ish nose, less prominent cheekbones, a wide jaw with a small mouth, sticky-outy ears, and straight hair that is combed back.

if i had to name one feature they have in common i'd say they have quite similar chins. but i'd say the civ 6 animators got that right purely by chance.

Yea if that's the rigor you expect then almost none of the leaders would pass muster. Remember when Teddy was first announced and people lost their poo poo about him being too much of a chubby caricaturare? They had to tone it down, can't have fun in a video game.

I'm not saying it should be photorealistic. Caricature is fine. Teddy Roosevelt is fine. But it should look at least kinda like the real person (for those who we know what they look like).

Take up your rifles
The thing that bugs me more than the face is the weird rear end outfit they've got him in. The other leaders who we have some idea of what they look like, even if facially they might not be not particularly accurate (like the only thing Civ 6 trajan has in common with his busts is the long nose, pretty much), you can at least tell what was the inspiration for the leader's design.

Like for young victoria, you can see her crown in this portrait:
and her dress and sash in this one

For Phillip they have him wearing a blend of the outfits he wears in two of his most iconic portraits

Even for Hojo who they didn't base upon a historical depiction, you can see that he's clearly based upon a portrayal of him from an early 2000s japanese drama:

Caesar is probably based on the much copied staute from the Palazzo Senatorio:

The lorica musculata roughtly matches up same with the sash around the waist. But then like, why is his cloak replaced with ginormous shoulder pads? Why is he wearing a solid bronze civic crown? Why is he wearing bracers, a thing nobody other than archers and D&D characters wear? The artists just made up a bunch of things and it leaves Caesar looking out of place because he seems to have been made with a different design philosophy than other leaders. I'm not sure I could have identified the model as Julius Caesar from its appearance alone, which certainly isn't the case with, say, Teddy Roosevelt.

The other leaders aren't even consistent. Some are exaggerated caricatures, some are realistic, some are complete rebuilds that don't resemble the person at all but go for a theme or feel or empty design space, and in this context of "anything goes" JC still somehow feels extremely weird and ill-fitting.

That problem was that was the game looked like it wasn't taking itself seriously and in conjunction with previous screenshots made it seem like Civ 6 was being designed to be a phone game.

Now we know that the developers don't take the game seriously and it is a phone game.

Julius Caesar looks like a middle-age dad that swapped places with Julius Caesar in a PG movie.

That might be beyond redemption, BE was *such* a mess that it effectively tainted the Alpha-Centauri-nostalgia well. BE2 wouldn't be able to make sales on good faith like its predecessor did.

I thought it was mediocre with some fun ideas, and in hindsight I think even bringing up AC was a bad idea, whoever did that first. I don't know who's going to write the next Alpha Centauri, but now I realize it won't be the Roman air conditioning people and I'm at peace with that.

Good sequels to wonky first games aren't exactly unheard of. I'd be optimistic if they announced BE2, although as with every Civ game I'm not touching it until I see the first expansion.

Part of the problem is that AC is so huge to the idea of future based Civ that anything less than AC was going to be a massive disappointment. To be sure, After Earth was incredibly less than AC, but still, I don't think anything would look good next to AC.

One of the reasons that Beyond Earth sucked so hard was that the leader abilities were boring. We thought we were going sci-fi, but one of the leaders abilities was just "+10% combat". It was also ugly and took too much work to make out anything on the screen.

I liked the spy system, and the system where being allies gave leader specific bonuses based upon the leader you were allying with though.

The background interactions and Space Twitter they worked into it was real good though. Civ might be fun if certain civilizations are a little more catty to each other, but working in "real world politics" stuff might need better left off limits.

I'd love for some kind of old-timey radio broadcasts that explain what is going on with the world incorporated into the background noise. A radio broadcast announcing that 3 ships were destroyed while trying to take a city, or that Elizabeth's offer of 500 gold for peace was rejected by Hammurabi would be cool.

Impossible to pull off for any reasonable amount of money though.

Rising Tide made BE for me, I was absolutely loving building up a couple of aquatic megacities and then using them as offensive support platforms, basically supercarriers plus fortresses moving a tile every 1-2 turns and repairing every actual warship as soon as they took damage. The aquatic-city faction leader's bonus which made this feasible was one of the most distinctive leader traits in the entire game!

No idea how this could be made to work with Districts, which are the single thing about VI that I like the most, but it would be pretty fucken hilarious to do the same kind of charge at an enemy's coastal cities except it's four or five tiles of interlocking districts per city, with correspondingly more slots for bonus-HP healing for the escort fleet. Talk about a nation in arms ~

Figured out why it's taking so long for me to be able to use the new content such as Abe Lincoln.

Turns out the Linux 'update' rolled the game back a few patches, and is sitting there untouched. There's a new scroller on the main menu telling me about the new content, but the binaries are literally old. Both 2k and Asypr (the guys who did the port) seem to want to wipe their hands of it all.

Great.

This is something that could possibly be done now with a bit of AI and a lot of clever programming. Whether that’s worth it is another question. I imagine someone is working on such a thing.
