For what it's worth, the prevailing opinions in my DMs have been a mix of "gently caress Earl Cooter" (the local promoter that WWN uses), "this is not Progress's fault at all," and "LOL of course Gabe yelled at you, he yells at everyone."

I have no problem admitting that the initial tweet w/ the occupancy certificate read simultaneously too alarmist and snarky, though.

dick justice just murdered a camerman live on powerbomb.tv, what a finish
Up to that moment, I thought the match wasn't coming close to Dick's Softcore Bed of Nailz Life Match against Johnny Cockstrong the day before in Jersey, as I'm not really sold yet on Orange Cassidy being funny. But my God, that finish was brilliant.

Saturday's show (which goes up on Beyond Demand sometime Monday) was quite good. Elgin-Janela, Gresham-Watts, and Hit Squad-H8 Club were the standouts, with the tag being like it was in a time warp. It was everything that you would have wanted it to be in 2002, up to and including not just the wall spot but chairs to the head of both Gage and Hatred. It probably would have been just as good without the chairs to the head, as the intensity from the promotional wars and other bullshit of 15 years ago was all there. Gresham was quite possibly the smoothest worker on the show, Big Mike include, and he and Stokely are a tremendous act live. Elgin-Janela was pretty much the exact match you'd expect on paper, in a good way.

Only match I thought was an outright disappointment was Stone-Silver. It was fine, but definitely the least of the last week's Johnny Silver matches. Stone has been a bit rote/samey in the various indie matches I've seen of him lately, feels like he needs to change something up.

For anyone else from NYC who wants to go to any future shows at GameChangerWorld, the ride to and from Howell was fine as long as you understand the quirks of of the NJ Transit bus system. Walk to and from the venue is just a few minutes from the nearest stop (Route 9/Strickland), though you ARE walking down the side of Route 9 with no sidewalk for most of the way over.

Shlak is really beyond defending at this point and I'm guessing that will take hold more widely within wrestling after the latest thing. Even if someone wants to play devil's advocate (and I do get the vibe that he was doing the LGBT show to try to get "the real Shlak" or whatever in front of people), he is still completely unable to do anything other than trip over himself with this stuff. That said, I do believe that those were defending him generally did so because they genuinely believe that he's not (currently) a Nazi or Nazi sympathizer as opposed to not caring about it or agreeing with views like that.

Of course, WWN would actually have to be running their own shows Mania weekend for DP to even have to make that decision. And as the months go on, it's looking less and less likely that it happens. Either they're waiting on WWE (since there's still no Axxess venue), they can't find a suitable venue (there are numerous factors in play here), or both.

Asbury Park could be (very generously) considered North Jersey but that would not be in range of Mania to do the required numbers.
I think if it was anywhere other than NYC, where the fans are going to be expected to rely heavily on public transit (including as part of the WWE travel package), it MIGHT be doable. The question is, basically, if ROH running Lakeland last year when everything else was an hour away in Orlando—and drawing their record crowd of 3,400—is remotely replicable by anyone else. I don't think it's worth testing, though.

The big problem right now is that a Spring Break-suitable venue is VERY hard to come by. They drew ~2,000 this year and should expect to do more for 2018.

* The only wrestling venue in NYC proper that could even barely match last year is the Hammerstein Ballroom, which is drastically overpriced, with rent in the $50,000 range or higher and a number of other contractual and union hurdles that make the cost even higher. Only Manhattan Center Studios would be allowed to shoot the show, there would be an origination fee, and only Manhattan Center staff would be allowed to sell merchandise.

* Elmcor Center is, while way too small for Spring Break, the biggest indie venue in NYC proper and also a terrible place to run. Hard to get to if you don't have a car and aren't by the 7 train, shenanigans with questions about the legal capacity and what they tell promoters it is, busted ventilation, leaks everywhere, the price hikes on water & food during #heatgate, no alcohol whatsoever (it's a community center/drug rehab, somehow), etc.

* The Rahway Rec Center in NJ lacks air conditioning—which shouldn't be a huge issue in April, knock on wood—but is otherwise a decent size gym...that would still be too small for Spring Break (you can maybe fit 1,500 people in with standing room). It's not super close to NYC, but it's only a few blocks from the commuter train station in Rahway, so there are far worse options for whoever runs there.

* Melrose Ballroom is a cool venue and I'm glad that it looks to be in regular rotation, but it's way too small for Spring Break. You can't put more than 700 people in there, which is about what Lost in NY did, but there are different ways to configure it. MLW was more crowded on the floor, but with much of the balcony closed off for production and less of the floor open because they moved the stage close to the ring to have an entrance ramp. (They probably drew in the 450 range.)

* None of the other wrestling-friendly club type spaces are big enough, either, which is why it wasn't exactly surprising that, even setting aside potential Axxess & NXT UK-related issues, PROGRESS won't be at La Boom. (They need a space that can hold at least 1,000 people.)

If GCW can't find their own venue for Spring Break, then I do wonder if they could make a deal for the same hotel ballroom that WrestleCon is using...

EDIT: I drafted most of this last night and forgot to post it until now. Well, Highspots is saying that not only is Rev Pro in the ballroom, but so is the Joey Ryan show.

Everything I heard about the current Basketball City after that show was that it was a terrible venue and people were extra frustrated because they tried to make it seem like it was by South Street Seaport when it was actually by the sewage treatment plant. Depending on which train you take, it's 0.5 to 0.7 miles from the nearest subway stops, which is not ideal but not terrible either (former is similar to the distance from the PATH train to the GCW Jersey City venue). I've never been there, but the previous Basketball City, which ROH ran a few times, was a loving disaster of a venue. It was pretty much all flat seating, but the worst part was that getting in and out was a nightmare. The actual venue was a pressurized bubble on the third floor of whatever building, so fans could only get in/out through a revolving door on that level and there was just one narrow staircase.

abraham linksys posted:

as EugeneJ noted, they're running Spring Break at 8pm this year, according to GCW's tweet the other day

I don't think it necessarily means they're running some place with union production, but a lot of venues in New York have some sort of curfew
Officially, the New York State Athletic Commission has an 11:00 p.m. curfew. There are obviously exceptions, especially for WWE, but nobody on the NY side of the Hudson River is going to be running a late night show other than maybe Kaiju, since they're good at avoiding being regulated as pro wrestling. At Lost In New York, I was seated right in front of the NYSAC inspector and this became an issue, but they were able to get enough time for PCO-Riddle to play out properly.

Seriously I've been an Evolve apologist for a while because I always have fun at their shows, but it was blatantly obvious that the last show's card was slapped together at the very last minute (it didn't even match the card they gave out at the event), and I don't really care about following it when it's not in New York.
This is sort of where I am, I guess. Even as deflated as the product can feel both post-big 3 leaving and in general, Janela-Drake killed at the last show. La Boom shows are a blast in general, and even with the annoying ticket price hike last time, I still left satisfied. The June show in Brooklyn was just weird, different, and good enough to be an incredibly memorable experience live, with the strong heel/babyface dynamic paying off big time in WALTER-Darby (one of the best matches and moments of the year) and Theory-Janela (one of the best moments of the year). And watching The Skulk get over big in NYC has been one of the more surprisingly fun things in wrestling this year.

But outside of going to the live shows in NYC, where they benefit from the commission and other expenses limiting the number of superindie type shows, and whatever other markets where they may be in a similar situation (are there any strong Detroit indies right now?), what IS the identity and pull of Evolve? Grapplefuck is long dead. ZSJ survived it and thrived, but he's gone now, as are Keith Lee and Matt Riddle, who then carried the company with him. The actual in-ring product isn't promoted as a WWE feeder, so it's not "the stars of tomorrow." Maybe it was about to be The Workrate Joey Janela Promotion, but Joey's injury obviously killed that.

He was an a desperate opiate addict. That type of robbery is generally perpetrated by addicts who get desperate. Being that Nick Gage is: 1. Trying to commit himself to extended sobriety and 2. He's not a bad person as far as I know, he just had a bad opioid addiction and the robbery was more of an attempt to cry for help than anything malicious.
Basically this. I've had nothing but positive interactions with him and have heard of zero negative ones outside of poo poo you'd expect from when he was using. I'd be way more surprised if he turned out to be a creep than probably the vast majority of people in indie wrestling.

Now, I'm all for forgiveness and reform and if Gage is making a sincere effort to fix his life and make amends then I hope for the best for him. But like... he still did something really lovely and wrong. Its ok to acknowledge that AND forgive.

Mostly I just don't like Deathmatch stuff and the only time I really enjoyed watching Gage was when he was teaming with his brother. But I haven't seen him since he got out of jail.
I don't feel like it really gets glossed over? He halfway melded it into his gimmick and everyone acknowledges that he robbed a bank.

As for his work, he's usually not a death match guy anymore. Mainly a brawler. I saw him have two really solid matches live at the SCI in August with no juice, few gimmicks, and no swearing. His match with Timothy Thatcher at Bloodsport, which I also saw live, was a delightful clash of styles, as well, for example.
