Has anyone in this thread been to my local indy promotion, Nova Pro in northern Virginia? I realized I've been to every show and never asked if there were any goons there. Tonight's the last show of 2016 and they've got Arik Royal vs. Chris Hero and Donovan Dijak vs. Jonathan Gresham. It's Sonjay Dutt's home promotion and they've been running since September 2015. I think a lot of the local guys are from MCW Rage.

Got to see Fred Yehi for the first time at tonight's Nova Pro show, they were trying out a new venue (bingo hall of a volunteer fire department) and the place was packed, maybe more than any previous show (other venues are the JCC and a boxing gym). Fred was good and cool, I'll have to watch more. Veda Scott took a bad bump when Jordynne Grace tried to do an electric chair/wheelbarrow/whatever driver moves and dropped Veda too hard on her back at a bad angle. They went home immediately but the match was still very good. Veda had to be helped to the back but she was recovered enough to be at the gimmick table by the intermission, just moving gingerly. Match of the night was Donovan Dijak vs. Sonjay Dutt, Sonjay's the local hero here and his matches are always good. Don't know if it was quite as good as Dijak vs. Gresham from a few months back but Dijak likes the promotion. Outlook's very good for Nova Pro in 2017, they have a show already scheduled for every month through July. Next month Veda's back and they're bringing in Joey Janela.

Nova Pro show last night was strong. All of the people I was seeing for the first time had good matches and I'd like to see them again: Rickey Shane Page, Alex Daniels, Rachael Ellering, Joey Janela, and Trevor Lee. Crowd was a little smaller than last month and extra annoying. I'm excited for next month's Commonwealth Cup. They'll be back at the JCC. Something happened in the Rave/Dutt match, seemed like Dutt was not happy with Rave. He did his big splash at like 8 minutes and Jimmy kicked out, but then Dutt yelled "count it" and re-pinned him and the ref counted a super quick 3. Sonjay ran around the ring doing a few angry hand slaps then went to the back. Rave did not seem visibly injured and hadn't really gotten any high spots in, they were just doing early match stuff to that point.

In other news, this Saturday is a double show for Nova Pro, sort of. Shows are at the Annandale Volunteer Fire Department Bingo Hall in Annandale, VA. At 3 PM there's a show where anybody who wants to gets a try-out match. It only costs like $5 for this show but I was still pretty mad about that because they're saying it's "an audition" and nobody on the show is getting paid. Sugar Dunkerton and Sis seem to be the main names that are doing the afternoon show, in that I've heard of them before. Other names they've posted on Twitter include: AC Hawkes, Cabana Man Dan, Donnie Primetime, Allie Kat, Laynie Luck, Delilah Blue, Mack Buckler, Mr. Grim, The Juggernaut, Zack Storm, Dante Caballero, Riesgo, Fenix Fury, Wes "Danger" Rogers, D'Ontay Turner, Zombie Dragon, Hell Cat Jimmy Star, Suicide Myers, Saso Rivera, and Ivan Ali. Christ, I'm going to be exhausted. Then the main card starts at 7:30 with actual wrestlers. Shane Strickland was supposed to be in the main event but he had to cancel at the last minute so now the third participant will be "the person that impresses the most at the afternoon show." Which is a pretty great opportunity, but also, I hope that person gets loving paid. They've retweeted Sugar talking about the spot twice so I bet it will be him. Nova Pro Report (I posted pictures on the Discord) Tryout show was enjoyable, very few duds. Stand-outs: Sugar Dunkerton, AC Hawkes, Allie Kat, Cabana Man Dan, and an unknown guy named Riesgo. Riesgo did some athetic/acrobatic stuff like an Asai moonsault and a big top turnbuckle flip even though he's a larger like 240+ guy with a muscular build. Zombie Dragon got a chant, and he was fine in the ring.   The most over match in the tryout show was: A MIME  versus X-PAKISTANI  Which is a guy in an X-Pac outfit but it has a mask with a head wrap and the tongue's sticking out People were wild for the mime. There doing the silent "clapping" where you wave your hands and shushing people that made noise in response to his high spots. Veda Scott invited Allie Kat, whose gimmick is she's an actual cat (which was awesome) to be her tag partner on the main show.  On the tryout, Cabana Man Dan and Donnie Primetime did a DQ finish in a match that had no Flip Flop Chop. They let them come back to do a pre-show rematch on the main card, and Cabana Man Dan did the Flip Flop Chop in that match. They also announced that they were changing the card quite a bit to fit more of the top performers from the tryout on the main card. This was the worst "making it about yourself" poo poo I've ever seen at one of these shows. One guy kept yelling interview questions into the ring as if it was a funny joke. Like, during a submission hold he would be like "John I see you're a little busy right now but can I ask you a question? Which cereal do you like best?" And the people around him were just encouraging it. Carnies were good. Fred Yehi did a job for local MMA fighter / pro wrestler John Kermon in a grappling themed match that was very good. Kermon is a wrestler who I only just this minute learned via Cagematch has been in ROH and has been wrestling like 10 years. So of course that one was good. I also got to see Anthony Henry for the first time and I loved him. They brought out Sugar Dunkerton and had him go 16 minutes against Arik Royal in a very good match. Dunkerton was over and they really put him in a top spot letting him go that long against Royal. He'll definitely be back. Rachael Ellering had a grudge match with Angelus Layne that was 8 minutes brawling on the outside pre-bell and then like 3 minutes inside after the match officially "started." It was very good. At this point, everyone was wondering who would be rewarded from the tryout to be in the main event, since that was the announced plan when Shane Strickland had to pull out of the show. They added Bobby Shields to the match, so it was Chet Sterling vs. Sonjay Dutt vs. Bobby Shields vs. Tryout Champion for the PWI Ultra J Belt. They brought him out last, and your challenger is... THE MIME  I was fuckin' groaning at this point, because, yikes. The mime did a bit of mime gimmicks then stayed outside the ring most of the match. He was biding his time and at a certain point he got in and started whaling on Chet Sterling with, let's say, some particular moves. Anyway you guys the fuckin' mime was "The Champion of the 1%" Logan Easton Laroux and they swerved me and I love this promotion with my life.  Logan stole the Ultra J belt and they announced that Chet and Logan will settle it at the July 14 show at the JCC in a first-ever-for-Nova-Pro Ladder Match. Thanks for reading my post.

That was weird and bad and of course had Shlak the Nazi in it. Donst has been good in Nova Pro, though. Next weekend they are doing title vs. title Donst vs. Starr, where Donst's AIW Absolute belt is against Starr's newly won wXw Shotgun belt. Neither guy has wrestled in the promotion where he could win the belt for, which I guess mean either Starr's booked for AIW soon or it will be a non-finish.

NOVA Pro American Slang 2017 Review: Gymnasty Boys vs. Ugly Ducklings opened the show and tore the house down. Both teams were over big, with the Ducklings being extremely over. White Mike didn't get to do as much White Mike stuff as I would have liked, but Timmy Lou Retton is always tremendous and the Ducklings are great. Hope to see both teams back soon, and they most definitely will be. Starr/Donst was wild because they were doing title vs. title and everyone thought there would be no finish and they built the entire match on that premise. They did a double count out, then restarted with no count outs, then they did a double DQ when they both wouldn't stop punching each other. They wanted the ref to restart it and he wouldn't, so they both punched him and another ref came out and they made him restart the match with no DQ. Finally after they got weapons involved the finish was a double pinfall. Good way to do the match when booked into a corner like that. Matt Cross vs. Sonjay Dutt was good. For Sandwich Squad vs. Mance Warner and Reed "By God" Bentley, Reed was killing me. When the Sandwich Squad was coming to the ring and there were no cameras on him, just for himself and the people on that one side that could see him, he berated a guy in the front row with pizza until the guy held the slice up between the ropes so he could take a bite. I don't know why but I just found this so incredibly funny. Then during the match one of his contacts came out and he yelled SOMEBODY HOLD MY loving CONTACT until a lady in the front row put her hand out to hold it. I talked to him later and he did get it back from her like 20 minutes later. He also had a shirt on that said "Reed Bently: A Perfectly Fine Professional Wrestler" or something like that which I really want. What I'm saying is I'm a big Reed Bentley mark. Brittany Blake vs. Angelus Layne was good, Angelus Layne is excellent. She had been threatening to "burn Nova Pro Wrestling down" and after the match she called out Mike the promoter to complain about how Taeler Hendrix didn't make the booking for the show. Mike just had a baby and she said "I hope you'll be a better father than you are a promoter" and blew a fireball in his face. So she's awesome. Main event ladder match was a solid ladder match. Logan Easton Laroux won the PWI Ultra J title. During the intermission I took picture with the Gymnasty Boys and Matt Cross. The house was maybe the most packed it has ever been at the JCC and they announced that they'd signed some kind of official deal with the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia to guarantee they'll be able to hold shows there through 2020.

Wish I knew to post about drama in here when Sonjay Dutt made Jimmy Rave go home after like 8 minutes by slapping his belly, making the ref count the 3, and then angrily going to the back at the Nova Pro show in May. The match seemed fine to that point. But then again I doubt there is any sort of "inside" line on the Nova Pro locker room.

Nova Pro Wrestling - Cool for the Summer - 8/18/2017 https://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=182061 It was the first sell out crowd in Nova Pro history, which is pretty great. The Annandale VFD Bingo Hall does have a lower capacity than the JCC, but it was very packed and the crowd was fairly hot. This was an angle-light show with good wrestling up and down the card and a lot of comedy. The video camera crew got stuck in traffic on 495 so the very early matches on the card were on Periscope: https://twitter.com/VAWrestling/status/898692966751096832 Near the end of that clip you can see the Indy Geek Six Man Scramble, where one of the indy geeks does a One Winged Angel in a six minute match on the preliminary card. It was otherwise a solid match with a lot of cool dives. Allie Kat vs. Brittany Blake was good, Allie Kat got booked back after her great showing on that tryout card a few months ago. Crowd enjoyed Veda Scott and Chuck Taylor vs. Faye Jackson and Innocent Isaiah, Stokely was way over with his singing gimmick and they got a lot out of it. Beau Crockett attacked Isaiah, who challenge Beau to a Last Man Standing match at next month's show. The Cutie and the Beast feud must continue. John Kermon vs. Chip Day was okay, not a lot of heat for it and Chip did not seem that comfortable working Kermon's MMA style. Tim Donst vs. Fred Yehi was strong. Donst has gotten over a "safety first" gimmick in this promotion after having to stop to tie his shoe during a match a few shows back. Yehi participated in it early when he noticed the middle rope was loose and they stopped the match to tighten the anchors and the crowd loved it. Eventually they started doing a match it was good. Royal/Sterling vs. the Ugly Ducklings was great and the crowd once again gave a standing ovation for a Ducklings match. I thought it was slightly weaker than last month's Ducklings vs. Gymnasty Boys match, mostly because Royal can't bump the way White Mike and Timmy Lou were bumping for the Ducklings. But it was still very entertaining and Arik Royal had so much fun that he got on the mic and said he wanted to do the match again. To Sub Rosa's question, Royal and Sterling are both faces here. Royal had an "undefeated in Nova Pro" gimmick going for like the first 18 months of the promotion until he finally lost to Logan Easton Laroux in the Commonwealth Cup. That included defeating like Chris Hero, Fred Yehi, and David Starr, so he got over in that time. The Progressive Liberal vs. Money Greene was exactly what you expected. PL is a lower level indy guy in terms of wrestling experience, he's just got the gimmick. Money Greene is an incredible talker with the rich guy gimmick and he's also a guy that seems like he started training when older because he loved wrestling, so he was never trying to be a tremendous worker. He knows his level. He is actually relatively over with the crowd here because of his "cheat to eat" catchphrase and he had to cut a pro-Trump promo to get a little more heat on him than usual. Dan Richards has funny gear and he knew that this is the liberal part of the country so he was a face and they played the roles well and had a sub-par wrestling match. I heard a couple people talking pre-show near me that were explaining that they came to their first Nova Pro show last night just to see The Progressive Liberal, so he no doubt sold some tickets to the event. 1% vs. Carnies was a good match. Both teams are heels but Carnies are a little less hated than rich people so they played the faces. Everyone in the match was good and they had a good six-man tag. The main event, Keith Lee vs. Angelus Layne, was tremendous. If you recall from last month, Angelus Layne shot a fireball into the face of the promoter Mike King, and her "reward" was that he called in Keith Lee (for the first time in Nova Pro) to get vengeance on her. Earlier in the show Angelus came out after they sang happy birthday to Papa Hales and tore up a Papa Hales shirt to get heat. Keith came out and offered that she could apologize to the promoter and he wouldn't destroy her, which she refused. Match was then set to be no disqualification. During Keith's entrance she came and whacked him with a chair, and the main "no DQ" part of the match was that a chair was in the ring most of the time to help Angelus equalize against a clearly more powerful Lee. The match was very good, although the crowd was pissing me off. Individual people in the crowd were trying to get themselves over by shouting things and because the venue is small Keith kept hearing them and responding. That hurt it a little. But in it was a great power battle. Keith Lee won but he gave Angelus respect after the match and also vowed to return to Nova Pro. Next month is The Nova Project 3, which is the second anniversary of the promotion and the start of year 3. If the blow off Beau/Isaiah then they'll need to hopefully jumpstart some new stories, because everything else has been wrapped up now that Angelus has been defeated. Only stuff announced so far is Arik Royal trying to get his revenge on "The Champion of the 1%" Logan Easton Laroux, the Beau/Isaiah Last Man Standing, and the return of Mia Yim. Nick Iggy yelled "Forced Destroyer!" when they did it so it made sense to me what was happening. It was Bobby Shields and Alexander James taking it. They had reversed the first attempt and it still took too long to set up the successful second try. Eh, it was fine.
