Setup complete! I've hidden the starting dots for ease of reading the PBP map. They're not used for anything else.

Active Card (resolves this turn): Radiation C5 & K2
Next Card (resolves next turn): Radiation B4 & K7

Sinewave, it's your turn.

STARVATION: Ignored on each player's first turn.
ACTION: Sinewave, please take 4 actions!

G5 ATTACK H6 - US soldier attacks USSR soldier (eliminating both). Hex G7 (ties for nearest dirty hex with others 2 hexes away) becomes DEAD as a side effect of the attack. (Some commie dead man's switch or something, because obv we're not using forbidden unstable weapons or anything)

F6 CIV MOVE TO G5 - Civvie joins the other civvie at supply depot.

G5 THREATEN H6 -> H7 - Two US civvies (not adjacent to enemy soldiers) threaten single USSR civvie to move to adjacent, non-dead hex.

E1 SOLDIER MOVE TO F2 - US soldier leaves the coast to join US civvie at supply depot.

This play is not legal. You can only move two pieces if you have both a soldier AND numerical superiority, and you don't have numerical superiority. You have three pieces in H5 (soldier and 2 civs), Sine has three pieces in G5 (2 civs and the depot).

You can still move two of his pieces, of course, but it'll take two separate Threaten actions.

Supply depot in G5 is uncontrolled. Radiation and refugees appear.

ACTIVE CARD: D7 & K3
NEXT CARD: E6 & D3, refugee B3

STARVATION:
J1 one neutral civ dies.
G1 neutral civ dies.
C6 one neutral defects* to depot G5 (depot now neutral). One blue civ defects to depot G5, becomes neutral.

F2, G2, and K4 have multiple options.

Sinewave, how will you resolve the starvation at F2, G2, and K4? Then, what actions will you take?

*This is a weird corner case I've never seen before, but it's technically a defection under the current rules. An unclaimed depot is not friends with any piece, so the neutral cannot Flee here. But can defect, and pieces which defect to unclaimed depots become neutral.

Technically, two blue civs could defect here and become neutral, leaving a neutral and a blue behind in G6, but I figured I could assume Sine's decision here.

I'll have to remember to add this to the FAQ. Or maybe just change it in v0.6? I don't know how I feel about this interaction.

Hmmm you say F2 has starvation but as a dirty snow hex (supports 1 unit) with +1 for the friendly supply depot... isn't F2 therefore not starving?

E1 however I think *is* starving with the neutral - but they should defect to the US civ soldier in their current hex (which can support +1 friendly over the usual 1 unit for dirty snow hex.) Am I wrong?

gutterdaughter
Oct 21, 2010

F2 can hold two pieces (dirty snow plus depot) and is holding three (soldier, civ, depot). Therefore it is starving.

E2 is fine. It is dirty snow, but can support one additional blue piece due to the adjacent blue depot. It is not starving. This may need clarification, thanks for pointing it out.

(I was talking about E1, do you mean E1?)

I understand perfectly (I think), but if I'm sharing my thoughts:

It's a little weird that the Neutral in E1 is not starving but G2 (also with two units) is starving. I get why, etc - but having the right context (which is a lot more than just "# of units per hex") is critical to the explanation making sense

Gutter Owl posted:

Yeah, I'm noticing a lot of people forget that rule. Might mean I need to change it in the next pass.

I think it's nonintuitive - the surrounding hexes get +1 but the supply depot itself does not (because it "uses up" its own +1 since it is a unit).

The Eyes Have It

Third Eye Sees All

Hmm to resolve F2 starvation, some non-intuitiveness:
US civilian flee -> E2 is illegal because rules state you can only flee to a hex containing friendly unit(s) that can support it, and E2 (despite being able to support up to two friendly units) contains no friendlies, only a neutral.
However the US civ cannot defect to that neutral because the neutral cannot support it (dirty snow, 1 unit only).
Even though the end result in the hex would mirror E1 :haw:

ANYWAY

Starvation Resolution
F2: US civ flees to clean snow hex F3 (joining a friendly unit in clean snow with room to spare) F2 no longer starving.
G2: USSR civ defects to G3 (G3 is clean snow, supports two units) Remaining USSR civ in G2 is no longer starving.
K4: USSR civ flees to K3 (joining USSR unit on dirty ice with room to spare)

My turn

1) Watch this. The newly-defected USSR civ from G2 has settled in with new best friends from the US of A in G3. After a hot meal, let's see what happens next! Ah, what people won't do for a meal.

G3 (now with two US civs) THREATEN G2; USSR civ in G2 MOVE -> H2

Welcome to Harshland! Things are way uncool here.

2) F4 (US Soldier) MOVE -> G4

3) G6 THREATEN H7 (two US civs, one USSR civ); H7 MOVE -> J7

Ok, I just reviewed the rules and see that PRESSGANG only converts if you move the neutral (s) into a hex with your pieces.

I feel like a total dipshit for all this, I'll sort out my last move asap.

To be fair, I am actively considering turning Pressgang into basically that in the next revision.

The Eyes Have It

Ok move 4 will be:

G4 SOLDIER PRESSGANG G5 NEUTRAL CIV; MOVE NEUTRAL CIV G4->G5

Aka moving a neutral civ away from the supply depot to my soldier's hex. Which I *think* I can do because even though I'm outnumbered 3:1 I still can do one because soldiers are armed. One for outnumber, 1 for presence of soldier. And it's clean snow so it supports us both. Unless I've caught the stupid more/again/still.

If that's illegal then move the second-from-furthest far left US civ one hex closer, I'm on my phone and checking the map to confirm hex # is a chore atm.

Radiation spreads!

H8 is already dead. Radiation spreads to an adjacent hex. H7 is empty, so the radiation spreads to H7.
K2 is already dead. Radiation spreads to an adjacent hex. No adjacent hexes are empty, so radiation can spread to an occupied hex.

Sinewave, you can spread radiation to J1 or J2. (J2 kills more pieces, J1 gets you a defector.) Which do you choose?
