And thus it came to be that the all seeing eye of BELELETH saw the Silent Ones run away from that which they did not understand. BELELETH pondered on this, for after the Loud One had made its appearance, the all seeing eye BELELETH could finally see that Sound had a place in the World and was in its own way a part of the Way It Is Supposed To Be. Perhaps it had, from the very beginning, and BELELETH had just been too blind to see. BELELETH pondered on this, and concluded thus: To everything there was a Beginning, an Ending, a Purpose, and the Way It Is Supposed To Be. The Silent Ones knew of Purpose, but their understanding was yet incomplete, and rifled with wrongness and paranoia and magical thinking. But if taught of Beginning, they could see that everything came ultimately from the same sources, the first principles of Nature and Logic, and that nothing was thus impossible to understand.

And thus BELELETH would make it be: The Silent Ones would know of Beginning, and the source of all things, and how to follow phenomena to their source.

Right, so BELELETH is teaching the Silent Ones about Beginning. Beginning, to BELELETHs Orderly mind being the deterministic way how things arise via the laws of logic and nature. Basically, teaching the Silent Ones derivative, scientific thinking and starting up some shiny bright enlightenment. Combining with their already philosophical and mathematical knack to increase the rate of technological innovation.

Micaiah looked at the Silent One's decision in confusion... and interest. This was not the intended outcome at all!

But, it is truly interesting. Ever curiously, she watched the group headed towards the mountain of her followers. She couldn't help but wonder what will happen. With glee, she let the situation unfold.

Nar and Ran, the twins, after a time realized what they had done. In seeking discord, they inadvertantly caused harm. "This will not do - for once I agree with you - Well how do we fix it - In the only way we know how."

And with that, they returned to the Deeplings and the Shoreward, mixing among them and teaching the ways of argument and ideology. And, of course, a way of doing battle with words, rather than through weapons. Nar and Ran began to engage in this themselves, often, showing the two races the Law of Words, a hybrid group debate/election in order to further ideas and settle fights. In time, the twin gods, who grew distant from their people, hoped that this would end the bloodshed, and promote a new coalition between the two.

Merging the Deeplings and Shoreward into a mixed community, bound together by the Law of Words.

Civilization

In the peoples of this world, changes begin again. The Deeplings and the Shoreward are shocked from their hatreds by the revelations provided by their dual natured god. The Natural Philosophers of the Silent Ones, driven by forces they now seek to master, seize control of their society.

The newly formed Ocean Confederation begin a golden age, as both Deepling and Shoreward alike share knowledge, culture, and resources. They discover a means to speed and direct the life cycle of coral, and build incredible living cities that brim with friendship and song as much as they teem with fish and people. Birth rates skyrocketed and explorers begin to find evidence that the two peoples are Not Alone in the world.

In all things, the Law of Words held primary, and all disputes are settled with impassioned rhetoric in the Courts, which are simultaneously civic and holy sites, each one dedicated to the remembrance of the Great Peace Debates, as they came to be known.

Meanwhile, on the surface, the Silent Ones spread out ever onward to avoid the great forest that was their now accursed birthplace. The Natural Philosophers, always at the forefront of new ideas, decided that they alone should control the flow of knowledge and thus power within their society. Renamed the Philosopher Kings, they seized control of the means of production and directed the labor of their 'lessers' in experiments to determine the natural laws from which all order sprang.

In only a short time they discovered many things: writing, glassblowing, astronomy, Mendelian inheritance, metallurgy, slavery, cartography, mathematics and geometry. The Philosopher Kings believed themselves to be the masters of the world, and the sole intelligent beings upon it... Until they met the Tengu.

The Tengu were still a fairly primitive people, but they had one advantage that the Silent Ones did not, iron. The pines of the high slopes made a rich charcoal suitable for smelting this dull colored metal they found in deep caves within the mountains. They quickly realized iron's superiority over the bronze they had previously been working, and when the Silent Ones came with their phalanxes of spearmen outfitted with soft bronze in search of conquest, they found the Tengu too hard a nut to crack.

After a few early skirmishes, the Philosopher Kings closest to the mountains realized they could not defeat the Tengu in force of arms. The winged warriors had the advantages in both mobility and weaponry, as their iron spears and arrows cut through the Silent One's armor and shields almost laughably easily and the heavy bronze made their own soldiers too slow to counter the Tengu hit and run tactics.

One of the Philosopher Kings, Socrates, took it upon himself to study the Tengu in more detail. While at first communication proved problematic, as the Silent Ones remain mute, he was able to teach a captured Tengu how to read and write to function as an interpreter. This Tengu, Thirsts-for-Sky, explained to Socrates the creation legend of her people... which sent shockwaves through the kingdoms of the Silent Ones.

At first the Philosopher Kings refused to believe the tale of gods transforming a small minority of their own people into winged singers, for were not the Silent Ones the only beings to be blessed with inability to make noises from the throat? Examination of Tengu bodies, and exploration of early, long abandoned, Tengu settlements confirmed the similarities between the two early cultures. It was also backed by the early religious teachings of the Silent Ones about a mischievous evil god who took the form of a giant bird, who matched the description of the Tengu's creator.

Now both sides maintain an uneasy peace, and wait for a sign from the gods.

Nar'ran surveyed the new underwater kingdom, happy to see the people of the Ocean Confederation following the right way of doing things (yelling at each other at the top of their lungs). Content, the twins headed upward, surfacing for the first time in an eon, and saw a clear blue sky. Clear, calm, peaceful.

A wave of hands and clouds appeared, darkening quickly. Another wave, and winds surged, causing high waves, causing clouds to roil. A third and final wave, and electricity sparked, bolting downward. Nar'ran smiled "This is good - yes, it is."

Increasing the frequency of storms, rain, high winds, flooding. tsunamis. As a side effect, raising the ocean level - more land for my people!

And thus it came to be that the all seeing eye of BELELETH saw a heaving from the Sea, loud and discordant. Pondering on this, BELELETH concluded that such Sound was not good for the education of the Silent Ones. And thus, the eternal essence of BELELETH sunk into the Sea, and with it came Silence also.

And thus BELELETH would make it be: Silence would come to the Sea, and calm and tranquil it would remain. A message for the Silent Ones was also sent: The Tengu need no be eradicated. Look instead to other lands for your iron, across the sea newly calmed, if you must.

Okay Nar'ran let's scuffle if you want to :colbert:

Angelus had passed the aeons fulfilling her quest to define everything. She had discovered and named all the things of the land, and all the things of the sky. The only thing that remained was the world under the water. With the seas rising, Angelus walked to the waters edge and descended into the underwater kingdom of the mad gods. She named the coral, and the fish, the octopi, of which she became especially fond. So many arms, so much potential to write below the waves! It did not take long for her to encounter the children of the ever arguing child of the Nameless one.

She watched them curiously, two species working together, and they enshrined words? Well, this just sounded like her kind of party. Angelus approached the creatures, wreathed in light and wonder. She sought to learn of their words and in doing so, would impart her own onto them.

A smile came upon Micaiah's face as she saw two two races accomplish peace. Her devoted were safe, now. Thirsts-for-Sky is who bridged the gap, and she will be rewarded.

She lands in the camp in the silent ones, and embraces Thirsts-for-Sky in her wings. This Tengu shall be her prophet. Infusing him with a small part of her own divine power, Thirsts-for-Sky grows not only in size and strength, but also in cunning. As well as gaining the gift of fire and the sky. Her shackles exploded from the rapid change, freeing the Tengu.

And thus, Thirsts-For-Sky was no more.

"You are now Two-Tongues, Tengu. My prophet. Bring prosperity and peace to your kind. Spread your proud race across this world. Enjoy life. These are my decrees."

And with that, she takes off to parts unknown, looking for more things to explore. Her first destination is in the forest the Silent Ones abandoned. In it, she finds a curious creature - covered in fur, small, but cunning. A fox.

Watching it hunt, an idea sprung to mind. Sentient life like the Silent ones and the Tengu are an endless source of new things! If she created even more races, she'd never be bored.

And with that thought in mind, she worked on uplifting these small creatures into another race, one of cunning and intelligence, not the sky and fire.

Making Thirsts-For-Sky my prophet, and then taking off to uplift myself some kitsune.

The Great Flood

And so it came to pass that the God of Discord looked upon the dry land, and in its jealousy called forth a mighty storm to drown the plains. Beleth tried in vain to stay the wrath of Nar'ran, but the Sea was the dominion of the God of Discord, and Discord's will would not be denied.

The Silent Ones scrambled to build their boats, somewhat confused by the will of their god, but His Wisdom was soon seen as the endless torrent of rain and waves washed away many of their homes. The most fertile of the lands was washed away entire, leaving only the rocky higher grounds spared. Many of the accursed forests also survived.

Not all was as Nar'ran planned, however, for the new seas were far too bitter for the Shoreward, and far too shallow for the Deeplings. Neither was all as Beleth planned, for many of the Silent Ones, swayed by Two-Tongues, took refuge in the mountain homes of the Tengu. What will come of this new mixing of what was once one people remains to be seen.

The Silent Ones are now a scattered, broken people. They have grown divided into two groups, the hardy Mountain Folk, who have grown thicker fur and focused on their innate telepathic gifts to better allow them to communicate with the Tengu, and the Sea Wanderers, who have lost their fur under the hot sun and most live their entire lives without ever seeing dry land.

The Sea Wanderers, unknowing or perhaps uncaring, prey upon the people of the Ocean Federation, attacking isolated Shoreward and devouring their flesh. They ignore the Shoreward's attempts to parley or invoke the Law of Words, for they are still Silent Ones, and the babble of the deep is meaningless to them. The great ocean is harsh and violent once more.

Meanwhile in the forests that remain, Micaiah flits down, and finds a small, red, adorable predator. It hunted primarily small birds and bugs, along with what rodents it could catch. As this was a time of great change, it was fortunate for these creatures, as the climate was now inhospitable to their primary prey species, a type of flightless bird that Angelus had named 'Chicken'.

With the gift of intelligence, these new people, named Kitsune were able to learn how to climb trees and catch flying birds as they slept. They were able to fashion nets and learned that fish was good to eat. They discovered fruit, apple was considered especially delicious! The Kitsune found the remnants of the Silent Ones civilization from before the great exodus and were confused. Where were the people who lived in the trees?

Angelus spent many years in peace amongst the Ocean Federation, and both learned much. It was considered a Golden Age, save that the Shoreward were warned to avoid the strangers who plied the surface of the ocean, especially during heavy storms when they could easily be separated from their pod of friends. For the first time The Arts flourished amongst the peoples of the ocean, and many great plays and songs were written.

Okay so I didn't have the inclination to manually remove every little marker on the map that is now underwater.

The all seeing eye of BELELETH watched impassively as the Silent Ones died. And BELELETH knew this was the Way It Is Supposed To Be. For as all things had a Beginning and a Purpose, so had they all an Ending also. The all seeing eye of BELELETH turned to the people under the ocean, and their nascent civilization. All things had an ending.

And thus BELELETH would make it be: The lesson of Ending. The forces of Entropy, Silence, Death and Time would be brought down upon the sunken people. All of them, and all their works, ideas and deeds would be reduced to nothing but dust.

As the world above the waves flooded, Angelus looked on. And she was Angry. The peoples of the land above were now in conflict with the people below. Such acts were unacceptable. And for what? Turning the world into a swamp?

No no no. This will not do.

Angelus sunk to the bottom of the ocean. and from the deepest part of the sea she began to construct a tower. A mighty edifice, hundreds of miles across. A structure like the world had never seen. She built it from words, each brick filled with the strongest and sturdiest language she could muster. She poured her divine powers into each and every one. A bastion, each brick a full story all of it's own, and she built it higher and higher. It breached the surface of the water, The corridors constructing themselves within, rooms as big as cities, within which Angelus started to construct whole worlds, forests and mountains, seas and rivers, great planes and mighty canyons.

She built it up into the sky, until it could be seen for miles in every direction. Upon it she emblazoned her knowledge and her art, the words that she once used to define the world and all things within it, now used to craft it. She commanded the very structure of the tower to alter and amend itself to meet whatever challenge could be thrown. For language was forever changing, and as such the bricks began to shift and move across the surface. Whole sections rearranging themselves. Then she commanded the rooms to see to the needs of those living within it's space. Food, and resources, but to never baby them. Those that would live here would work, and hunt, just as it was meant to be.

Lastly, she began her greatest work. There would be times in which she would not be here. And there needed to be those who could run and protect this sanctuary. So she made a construct, a creature born of the words, both wondrous and monstrous by the standards of natural life.

"My child, I name you the first of your kind. Within you I have given a purpose, to watch over this tower and all who would dwell within it during my absence. I grant you power, and a soul, and your names shall be the Prime. Your bones will be as Amber, and your flesh will be as word. Holy and powerful."

She taught them of the Words, and their true power in the world. For while they could define what was true, they could also create truth from nothing. Magic, sorcery, truthsmithing. She gave these being purpose, and seared it into the very essence of their beings.

With that she waited for the first to come and investigate.

Is it I that is insane... or the rest of the world?

Micaiah looked upon the flood with a mixture of worry and curiosity. This is certainly new... but not very interesting. Such destruction is never interesting. But the god of Silence seemed to be reacting to it in his own way already, so she saw no reason to pay it heed. Instead, she left the kitsune to their own advises for now, so that they may learn the world on their own accord. Instead, she turned to the Tengu, specifically, her prophet.

"Two-Tongues, you have done your work well. I must only ask that you do not treat the Silent Ones unfairly for their previous treatment. For they, like you, are young and have much to learn. Treat them instead with kindness and integrate them with us. Expand to other mountains, if you must. Allow the two people to become something greater together!"

Then, her hand holding her shoulder (well, her wings), she turned to the forest they originated from.

"Do you see this forest?" she asked.

Her prophet nodded. "Our birthplace."

"Yes. In it, I have found another people worthy of my attention. The kitsune, fox-people. I must ask that you extend kindness and guidance to them, as well. In time, I am sure they will join you, as well. But do not try to turn them into another you, let them grow into their own."

The Tengu nodded once more.

"As my prophet, you have done admirably. I have decided to allow you to ask me one question I will answer truthfully. If you have one, ask it, now."

Later, after answering her prophets question, she takes to the air once more. In the distance, a curious tower has pierced her beautiful sky. This cannot stand, however interesting this object is. She floods the Sky with her divine energies, turning it into a manifestation of her will. With luck, pushing back against the water may also normalize this situation.

Going to use Sky to turn the Sky into a manifestation of myself (basically, a "sea" of sky pushing back down onto the things bothering her, this being the water/the tower)

Nar'ran watched curiously as the sea rose, and the Silent Ones adapted, and as the Great Creative One joined them in witnessing the Ocean Confederacy's rise. Art, literature, and above all else, the Law of Word. This pleased Nar'ran, and they enjoyed as the little beings played their own versions of god, stating laws, redacting them, amending them, and ultimately, arguing about them. It was a time of great discord, but also of growth and learning and culture.

They also witnessed the Great Ordered One, in his apparent anger over their actions. They saw his intent, to create Ending among the ocean civilization. For a time, Nar'ran pondered the meaning of this move... and what to do about it, if anything. This was a great thing, to see a god so moved to lash out... a true discord among them! But then again, the people they had bonded most with were now facing a curse of sorts. "Should we save them - do we have to - well what happens if we dont - a great many perish - a firm less on to all - but will they truly End - they shall - unless we do something - but will we ?"

The Great Creative One then rose a mighty tower, and the Great Winged One moved to knock it over. Another great true discord! Nar'ran celebrated and triggered a mighty feast among the ocean beings, a celebration they meant to call "Argumentum. This day, a day in which the gods bickered and fought, would be celebrated for its true nature - a very struggle for the best of all! Indeed, as the Deepling prophets say, only after the greatest and loudest voices clash, can the true course be divined.

Nar'ran decided not to stop the Great Ordered One, rather, working alongside to end the Ocean Confederacy. For a time, the ocean became poison, and a great many died among the Deeplings and Shoreward. But those that survived, those did because they were stronger, more powerful, more adept. Nar'ran waved his hand, and the two races blended, mixing their best traits, into a new race of beings, a kind that mirrored the image their curser - the Great Ordered One. And as they struggled to survive, they changed in other ways as well, learning to dive deep as well as walk on land. Nar'ran called them the Surfaced, for they had struggled through the cloudy waves and made it to a brighter future. Truly, a race born in discord.

The Surfaced carried with them all of the baggage of the past - the Law of Word, Argumentum - but also a new drive to survive and spread the cultures of their changed people. Prophets arose, and missionaries, climbing from the depths, spreading across the globe, telling all people of the wonders of discord and collaboration through disagreement. And in sharing of the arts and lessons their kind had recorded, the Surfaced hoped that their words and ways would find homes everywhere.

Killing off most of the Ocean Confederacy, replacing them with a new race that're stronger and more intelligent - the ones that survived. And then establishing a religion and spreading it across the globe.

Babel and the Sea of Blood

For a time the oceans ran red, and everything that touched it died. The birds, the fish, the deep sea monsters, the people of the Ocean Federation, all died in agony. Nothing survives. Even the Sea Wanderers find their numbers severely reduced by the Time of the Blood Sea, as they came to call it. Then the sky above blazed in light.

Angelus' Tower of Words, the mighty Babel that reached unto the heavens, was opposed by Micaiah's will. Wind and storm and fire raged against Babel for forty days, each day the Sun blazed in fury, and each night the Moon raged in concert. Any who attempted to cross the Blood Sea and reach Babel perished, though they felt its strong pull.

Until finally, one day, the Sky ceased its fury, and the Sea ceased its killing, both spent. Babel stood proud over the once more blue ocean, and life began anew in its depths. The keepers of Babel released fish and fowl back into Sea and Sky from within their mighty fastness, and the ocean's bounty renewed.

Such however, could not be said for the Ocean Federation... slain to the last child, their bones failed to even rot at the bottom of the poison seas, corpses cruelly intact, preserved by the very forces that destroyed them for even decay is a part of life. The cruel wills of the gods cannot be denied however, and from the depths arose a new thing, a terrifying unliving amalgam of Shoreward and Deepling fused together by the will of Nar'ran. Unbreathing, these creatures, which would come to be known as the Surfaced, spread their dread gospel in chants of praise from stilled lungs. They would drag chests ashore which contained the great writings of their former people and leave them in their wake. Any slain by one of the Surfaced would themselves rise again as a holy servant of Nar'ran, to forever bear the marks of their death.

Unsuspecting, the Tengu and the Mountain Folk expand their reach as the oceans slowly recede to their original levels. The two people prosper and in fact even intermarry, although such a union results in children who mostly bear the features of one parent with perhaps a single gift from the other. Now long used to joyous song, the Mountain Folk help the Tengu reach out to the Kitsune in their forest homes, and the three peoples form a new nation, the Union of People.

The Union is threatened however, by the coming Terror from the Deep...

Nar'ran gains an additional Fate point. Micaiah gains an additional Fate point.

By the end of the next action, unless something is done to reverse it, the sea levels will return to their original (beginning of game) state.

Nar'ran watched as the oceans turned red, poison flooding the culture they had cultivated. As the Ocean died, Nar'ran consulted with themselves, "Perhaps this was not the best course of action - do you regret it? - Well, it does appear to be overkill - rather, seemingly the right amount of kill."

But then, from the sea, arose a new people! And indeed, they resembled one of Nar'ran's first goals - reincarnation! His people, The Surfaced, they continued on, carrying with them the lessons of discord. The Law of Word grew even more entrenched among this new people, guiding their every way of living (or... unliving). The Surfaced quickly formed a coherent hierarchy among them - the more able to think and talk, the more power to be held. The Coherent, those on top, argued in perpetuity, how best to spread the Law of Words. Needing no food nor air, they never needed stop debating, barking orders and rulings at the rest. At the bottom, the lowly Babblers, barely capable of thought, were used as packanimals, or warriors, or servants. Others too, the Song-traders, the Playwights, the Poem-seers.

And all spread amongst the world, exploring new places, seeking new people with whom to tell of the Law of Word. This was not a violent exercise, rather the opposite. The Surfaced came bearing gifts - works of art, ways of technology. Needing no food, the Surfaced formed hunting parties to furnish feasts for villages, spreading goodwill. "Join us in our debates" was the message, "Live as you will, and when you die, become one of us for an eternity of celebrating Argumentum."

The Tower stood.

Ha.

Angelus looked out upon the receding seas. She was angry that Micaiah would dare to try and strike at her. But she was not so petty that she would seek vengeance. No, no, no...

Instead she turned her gaze downwards. The law of the word would be preserved. Her Prime moved out into the sea, gathering what relics could be gained. The depth of the water mattered little too them. Their ever changing bodies adapting to the harsh conditions. From the deepest bedrock of the sea they crafted servitors of their own. Mighty stone men, who helped haul what could be recovered back within the tower. In the lowest rooms, a shrine was crafted to remember the fallen empire. The Stone Men were given a home, to tend to the shrine. They were strong, but lacked a mind of their own, they needed the guiding mind of a Prime to command them. But for a first effort it was commendable.

Angelus looked out to the lands, as the seas returned. Out there were people, and animals who had survived the chaos. Would it not be right to offer them a home as well? She had watched the other gods create children almost callously. Abbandoning them and returning as and when it suited them. She worried for their creations. But it was not her place to interfere. So instead she set out, seeking creatures who could impress her, who bore just the right spark. They would be uplifted, and would come and reside within the Tower. Angelus found her first in a small lizard like creature, the basked in the sun for warmth but they would be well suited to a number of lands within the tower. She placed her hands upon them, imbuing them with the Words, and a spark to speed their evolution. Shaping them into bipedal creatures. But she left the rest to evolution. The race would decide their own future. When they did Angelus would instruct them of the world and give them a choice, join her in the tower, or make their lives in the wilderness of the world.

The Arguing Horde and the Scalekin

As before, life is reformed by Godly touch. The reptiles of the deserts at first seem poorly suited for intelligence, sluggish and weak, but as the process of guided evolution speeds through their forms things change. Legs become arms, feet turn into hands, tails tilt as pelvises realign and shoulders shift necks upwards. Skulls grow bulbous as brains expand under the incredible radiance of the words seeking expression.

Soon enough, the first of the Scalekin raised her voice to the air. Others responded, and the Words poured forth, forming a nomadic people. The Scalekin spread out along the shorelines, never settled in one place for long. They had a great curiosity about the world, and quickly advanced. They used the magic inherent in Words to build and shape their environment, discovering carts, harnesses, wagons, rafts and then boats and even ships. Always on the move, the Scalekin sought what was beyond the horizon.

The sudden and rapid explosion of the Scalekin onto the scene brought them soon enough into contact with the Union. The Union, for their part, were distracted by the intervention of their patron goddess and the strange headaches and visions that had begun to plague the Mountain Folk. Their first meetings were amicable enough, but neither group had anything they wished to trade and the Scalekin ended up disdaining the sedentary agricultural ways of the Union as weak.

The Union took to the words of Micaiah perhaps too well. Tengu and Kitsune began to train in the arts of war long neglected by the Mountain Folk and built stout walls of wood or stone around their settlements. Instead of expanding their territory, they fortify and consolidate. With so many minds in close proximity, science advanced at a rapid pace.

Miners in the deepness of the mountains find a strange black rock that burns readily. Intrigued by a stone that burns, the descendants of the Philosopher Kings begin to experiment with the substance. They quickly discover that the new substance burns much hotter and more reliably than any other fuel and it revolutionizes their works. After many explosions and more than a few injuries, the newly christened 'coal' is utilized in almost every aspect of society.

Streets are lit by coal gas, homes heated by coal, even transportation is transformed with the discovery of the steam boiler. It is discovered that steam boilers, with the addition of gears, can do the work of many men or animals, and the first trains are built to ship goods between the now growing cities. A series of accidents leads to the discovery that heated air can lift objects, and a simple hand powered screw leads to balloons taking to the skies.

Meanwhile, the Surfaced continued to endlessly debate with one another outside the walls of the Union fortress cities. They are heedless of the damage they sustain from Union spears hurled from walls or balloons, as nothing seems capable of ending their strange animation. They continue to try, and fail, to convert living recruits to their cause by staging elaborate plays, feasts, and orations. An outsider would consider these performances macabre, as the Surfaced make no effort to hide their unhealing wounds and unnatural appearances as walking corpses, some of them in advanced states of decay.

Many things are in process and some of them won't come to fruit until next turn. The Union of People have reached the Industrial Revolution (sans gunpowder).
