Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong here? I am a HOI vet that has played since HOI2 and I'm stumped.

I am playing as facist Nepal, and I expanded to take over all of China. China currently has the Chinese United Front formed, and when it goes to capitulate I only have a 16% warscore and my only option is to annex Sianking state, and everything else goes to the Reformed Chinese Government. I control nearly all of China myself and have inflicted almost a million casualties, so what the hell?

I am using the road to 56 mod, but I don't see anything listed in it that would cause something like this. Anyone know if I am being screwed by an event or if the mod is to blame or what?

Who else is at war with China? Just Japan? Load the save just before the peace conference and check what everyone else's warscore looks like.

I've never seen Sinkiang join the Chinese Front, but maybe that's a Road to 56 thing.

Also, major congrats on stomping China as Nepal.

Taking China was actually pretty easy, only it took like 3 years for my guys to grind through it. China is almost 100% infantry so if you max out your soft attack with arty and rockets it's a totally one-sided meat grinder- you just have a lot of meat to grind through.

It was 1941 when I launched the war so the entirety of the axis is at war with China. Sianking doesn't even exist as a separate country, it's just the only region I'm allowed to annex.

I'm not really sure I understand how warscore works in HOI4. I have 100% participation in my war, but there is a separate war going on with the axis. Are they capitulating to the axis, not me, (despite Japan holding only the northeast corner of China) so that's why this is happening?

You probably need to declare war on the Axis before China capitulates then, if you want the territory.

That did it, thanks! Strange that I've never run into this problem in HOI4 until now, it's a really stupid game mechanic. Now what I really don't understand is why when China capitulated this time all of its territory that was occupied by Japan went to France and the UK. At least I got to keep what I occupied.

Are there any up to date guides for surviving as Ethiopia? I know it was possible last year when the game first came out, but it seems like paradox has changed some things to make those methods not work anymore, like moving Italy's southern port a few provinces southward.

After those changes it was still possible to take advantage of some dumb AI behavior where they shuffled troops around up north, but they've fixed that as well. Someone at Paradox really doesn't want people surviving as Ethiopia :tinfoil:

I can't say I'm struggling with anything in particular. It's like I know how each individual part works, but I don't know how they work together.

I guess what I'm looking for is a guide that explains the thought process behind the player's actions, but I don't think those exist anymore.

The HOI3 wiki has quick guides as to what you should be doing (as in, who to attack in what order) for almost every country. The game mechanics are mostly different, but the overall strategies they suggest or more or less the same.

I have never ever built AT guns, but don't really think I've ever had a problem as there are usually so few tanks on the battlefield that I run into. That said, I play minors 99% of the time, but do regularly go up against Germany and Russia. Am I missing something here?

Do peace conferences give you a big discount on requesting provinces that you control, while charging people who don't control it many times as much? Because if not I feel like that would fix peace conferences.

It's probably the best mod for alt-historical fuckery because they have an extra research menu that is designed for min-maxing. I did a Nepal run where I conquered most of China and Japan before I ended up quitting. You can get something like +200% rocket artillery soft attack if you take the right research options.

Playing as a minor isn't even as fun in HOI4 because after 1940 any independent nation you attack instantly joins their aligned faction even if you yourself are independent. You have to play crazy efficient for the first four years and hope to gobble up 2-3 countries before the gates are closed and you're forced to pick a side.

Arven

I find that even as a minor if I can invest 1-3 factories into building fighters for a year before war I have enough planes to contest the airspace if not gain total air superiority. I play only against the AI though and it seems pretty bad at managing its air assets.

Can anyone explain why these numbers don't add up?

2.87K + 16.80k + 2.40 != 29.57K

And just now I rasied my conscription laws and it stayed at 2.87K free. Bug? Is there any way to fix this? Is this a Road to 56 bug? Kind of sucks because I finally pulled off an invasion of Denmark as Iceland after like 6 restarts.

Nope, wasn't taking casualties or building boats. I'm thinking Road to 56 and the no ai unit spam mod I'm using that someone linked in this thread don't play well together.

I'd love to find a mod that lengthened the timeframe and added 50's equipment that didn't add tons of extra crap on top.

This was one of the big flaws pointed out to the air combat system which was not fixed with the UI overhaul.

Ughh. This explains so much. I've had doomstacks of 1000 fighters in an airspace against <100 enemies and not held air superiority before, and this explains why. Why do they even let you have that many fighters in a wing? Way too many traps in this game.

Road to 56 is pretty much my go-to mod package now, the author fixed (ie: nerfed) most of the hilariously overpowered focuses from the focus trees included with the package. It's not historical by any means but if you want to fight a war between the Neo-Byzantine Empire and the 2nd Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth while Germany is off having a civil war with the Kaiser, this is your mod. (this actually happened last game)

My current road to 56 game is a massive four way battle between the axis, the allies, the comintern (including Communist France, which only just fell to Belgium of all things in 1945), and the African anti-colonial faction lead by me. They really did fix a most of the egregious poo poo, like you can't cheese the gently caress out of the focus tree as a minor and have a 50% research time modifier in 1938 anymore and a lot of the extra focuses now actually have downsides.

Arven

I always play minors and my recipe for naval superiority has always been doomstacks of subs with a few light cruisers thrown in to hold the enemy in combat until the subs can shoot, supported by bombers. I've never had problems sinking battleships, and while carriers don't get sunk very often the AI tends not to leave capital ships out at sea without any escorts.

Most minor nations can crank out 12 subs a year once they get their naval production focuses done and conquer a neighbor or two that has theirs, or they can build a battleship in 2.5 years with that same production. Not exactly a difficult choice there.

Did a run as Bhutan just to see how long it would take to go from completely neutral to fascist and at war with a neutral neighbor and... oof, good luck getting any wars in before 1939 now. I'm sure the Road to 56 will still let you cheese that up with focuses, though.

Also Japan caused the United Front to surrender by mid-1938. Is it possible that having them all in one faction is actually worse than before, as the fighting doesn't drag out into the 1940s anymore because whole faction just surrenders as a whole as soon as one or two of them are overrun?

Gave it one more try this morning and I managed to kick Italy out of Ethiopia. Here it is after the final Italian troops were overrun on October 3rd.

(screenshot cut if off, but I took 25k casualties)

I played on speed 3x and didn't use the AI at all for front lines, micro'd the poo poo out of everything and managed to encircle and destroy the entire Italian army. They landed some tanks at the end, but it was too late as I had already taken their ports. Quite frankly I was only able to do it because I got super lucky with the RNG. The random general I recruited to be my field marshal was a an Infantry Officer, so despite the casualties I was taking my guys never dipped below regular, and only one of the negative events fired- the one that effects your recruitment (normally I seem to get worker strikes over and over). The AI is a LOT smarter about not getting encircled, but it can't help itself if you give it a big hole in your lines with a clear shot to your capital to try to push.

What is it about this game that attract modders that hate ahistorical situations?

I was messing around in the End of a New Beginning mod (basically tacks Victoria into HOI4, runs 1867 to 1967 or something) and played as a Native American nation for the hell of it. I got in a war against the US, and despite winning the warscore via casualties and holding all my territory, I couldn't sue for peace because of the "base reluctance" mechanic.

I hopped on their discord to suggest that maybe base reluctance shouldn't be a thing before ~1900 because it essentially requires complete annexation to end a war... and I was slapped down by a Dev who told me that I shouldn't be fighting wars that weren't started by an event or decision, and in the situation I was in there wasn't an event to end it if I was winning because my nation was supposed to lose.
