I'm playing a second USSR game and somehow during Germany's war against Poland, all of the focuses to claim the Baltic states and Bessarabia got bypassed/completed. Not sure why, but okay. I remember from my last USSR game that I kept getting events where the Baltic states would just give up, and I'm pretty sure there's an event where Romania does the same for Bessarabia. How do I make this happen? I'd rather not actually justify and go to war if I can help it.
Start the justification and they'll poo poo themselves and give up "peacefully" before it finishes.

Any Japan strat that doesn't declare war on the Netherlands before 25% world tension (ideally the same day you declare on China) is incorrect. Take the rubber before they are guaranteed/join the Allies.

I did all those things, then the Chinese smashed my lines and made an encirclement that Hannibal would have been proud of and that I was powerless to interfere with. Like, it was some crazy blitzkreig poo poo. I didn't know infantry could move that fast. They took over a dozen provinces before I could even retreat from one frontline engagement.

I think the general problem was wearing out my troops being too aggressive, though. I easily took Beijing, actually, but as the front widened I shouldn't have kept pushing.
Did you upgrade the Dalian port to make the supply situation less poo poo? You probably just starved your men to death.

How to Japan:

Send your max # of troops to Spain - but use infantry. Your goal there is to harvest army experience for putting artillery in your templates, not winning the war for the fascists. Only fight in plains to conserve equipment. Never help actually taking VPs/encirclements.

Pull everything off the Soviet line, pull everything off the islands. Your garbage garrison troops with the worst infantry equipment and green training should be barred from using the latest equipment via the Equipment button on the division designer, or be simply be disbanded. New division training (mostly marines and a handful of your starting "tank" and motorized templates) should have highest priority. I like switching doctrines to Superior Firepower.
Attack in spring '37. Every bone in your body will tell you to wait just a few months more to get better equipped, but go. They are hurting more than you.

Your northern army's only objectives are to do a quick thrust take the airfield and surround Beijing. That should bag you 10 surrendered divisions. Then do the the same thing to Tianjin by getting over the river, that should bag you 10 more surrendered divisions. Play defense on the western mountains, but really as long as Mengkukuo doesn't capitulate you have some land to trade for time. Have the Dalian port at at least level 7-8 on the first day of war. Keep a surface fleet on Hold to give you the shore bombardment modifier around Tianjin.
Land an invasion in Qingdao. Either just push out of the peninsula to a 3-province wide front and sit there, or try to link up with the northern army along the coast. Now land at Shanghai and take Nanjing. This basically kills all their factories. Now you just keep reinforcing the Shanghai front and push north along to coast to link up with the Qingdao front. Keep landing small forces at every port further and further south. They will be spread so thin and be so out of infantry equipment that they'll start collapsing everywhere.

I also like putting in a justification against Netherlands to be used on the same day as we start China. The world should be at maximum 20-24% tension when you declare both wars to avoid the British guaranteeing Netherlands. 3 divisions hoping around unopposed can get you to the 'infinite rubber and enough oil' situation sooner.

Focus order: army primacy --> free civilian factories --> war --> army innovations --> research slot

Is there some reason I'm not seeing that should give me an incentive to keep the default close-air-support to naval-bombers ratio on my CVs, assuming I don't care about attacking land divisions directly?

1940 CV Naval bombers stats (whose air-frame names imply they represent torpedo bombers)
Naval Attack: 2.0
Naval Targeting: 1.0

vs

1940 CV CAS stats (whose air-frame names imply they represent dive bombers)
Naval Attack: 1.0
Naval Targeting: 1.0

I would have imagined that dive bombers would have had a slightly better targeting stat, but it is not so in-game. Both the Japanese and Americans very highly valued doing combined-arms attacks of both types together during fleet engagements, and that benefit doesn't seem represented. Either by a modifier to the battle saying 'you are doing both at once, you get +XX% effectiveness', or by them have simply having different pros and cons (dmg vs accuracy). There's also nothing to represent the idea of leaning more on torps if your enemy has heavily armored battleships and leaning more towards dive bombers if they have tissue paper carriers.

I'll make the case for German War Economy.

If you want to follow historical timelines, you have time for 19 focuses before declaring on Poland. (1339 days between 1936-01-01 and 1939-09-01, and dividing by 70)

The 'mandatory' ones, in the general order I take them (Austria/Czech whenever they light up, might be earlier/later).
code:
Rhineland
Four Year Plan
Army Innovations
Autoarky
Herman Goring Werke
KdF-Wagen
Extra Research Slot
Air Innovations
Treaty with the USSR
Anschluss
Demand Sudetenland
First Vienna Award
Fate of Czechoslovakia
Reassert Eastern Claims
Molotov Pact
Danzig or War
That's 16. You have room for 3 actual choices to fit somewhere in there while waiting for 'in the field' numbers to be met. Your choices are some combination of:
a1) spend 2 getting to German War Economy. If you hire Goebbels you can do this very early.
a2) spend 3 getting to Integrated War Economy.
b) spend 3 getting to U-Boat Effort, giving you a far better shot at the Battle of the Atlantic.
c) spend 3 getting to the next layer of doctrine ones (Army Innovation II, Tactical Air Effort, Air Innovations II) which will make your Blitz faster and have fewer casualties.
d) spend 2 to make your synthetic rubber a complete non-issue, making you far more self sufficient when war starts.

I don't think Integrated is worth it. Too much opportunity cost. I'd rather max my infrastructure in several states instantly and have time for one piece of b/c/d.
Japan usually invites Romania the second you give them the fascist diplomacy modifier anyways.

The primary design flaw with the espionage system is that mission costs don't scale with target country size. It should cost far less time and material investment and agent count (why always two) for Germany to prepare a collaboration government in Denmark than in Poland.

There should be 'soft' peace conferences when a faction leader is 50% capitulated and again at 85%. First one is only declaring which broad regions you are most interested in, some sort of ranking or percentages. Second one firms it up by going through each region one at a time and calling first dibs on particular countries. Final one when the war ends actually transfers states/puppets. Have the popups reference Tehran/Yalta.
