The slave states were absolutely terrified of the idea of black people with guns, and they had standing orders for any captured black union soldiers and their officers to be executed. GENERAL ORDERS, No. 111. posted:Now therefore I, Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America and acting by their authority.... do issue this my proclamation, and by virtue of my authority as Commander-in-Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States do order– That's why the prisoner exchange system broke down and the POW camps became such a nightmare. They didn't try arming slaves until very late in the war, a month after the capital had been captured and burned. They never saw combat and every slave and officer involved was convinced they were going to be shot in the back if they did. Unsurprisingly, the CSA was still petty enough to decree that any slave conscripted would be considered property and returned at the end of the war. GENERAL ORDERS, No. 14. posted:SEC 5. That nothing in this act shall be construed to authorize a change in the relation which the said slaves shall bear toward their owners, except by consent of the owners and of the States in which they may reside, and in pursuance of the laws thereof.

I just finished a Stellaris binge over the memorial day weekend, so all I can think about when I see those videos is how cool it would be if an alien colony ship tried to invade, or if a rogue scientist from an observation post gave laser guns and nukes to China or Germany. Or maybe a full mod. Seriously though, this game looks amazing.

I expect a little AI wonkiness if I put a skill 1 general in charge of an entire theater; couldn't skill 1 generals have special bad general events? Not necessarily https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pietro_Maletti bad, but maybe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Fredendall bad? Ghetto Prince fucked around with this message at 23:13 on Jun 4, 2016 |

Finally made some time to sit down with this and did the tutorial and a quick 2 year game as Germany. It's really fun and I have to say I loved the volunteer system. It's a nice distraction while you're waiting on factories to build and stuff to research in the early game and it was a great crash course in how to create battle plans. I also like how the national focus tree for Germany specifically tells you to have half a million people trained before you can pick certain stuff, but I kind of miss the max army / max navy size chart from EU4. Another thing I haven't worked out yet is the kind of armies I should be building and how many divisions I should be training, or how they use resources. Should you just train infantry in the early game? Is there any point to building the 1936 era planes and tanks?

Gort posted:Has anyone done any maths on how long it takes for building civilian factories to pay off compared to military ones? So far I've ignored civilian factories entirely and am wondering if I'm missing out on an industrial snowball. Oh yeah, the first one takes awhile, but by the time you've got it built you've probably got the first -10% construction modifier and a -10% construction time adviser, and every one you build helps you build the next one even faster. You can start massively snowballing. Plus you can convert them to military factories when the war breaks out and you need to start churning out thousands of replacements and upgrades.

I just learned the hard way in my Germany game that you absolutely should not invade the USSR unless you have massive air superiority. Or maybe just that you should not invade the USSR.

Turns out the France game is really fun if you go full defensive. I also had one army in Africa to play around with that I ended up using to invade Sicily, the British AI actually sent troops to back me up in that and it went so well I was able to charge my second army across Northern Italy and catch most of their troops between the two. Germany did a horrible war of attrition that got to the outskirts of Paris around 1943, but I think their manpower ran out right as 100 US divisions showed up. Are there any crazy mods out yet? Luigi Thirty posted:I booted this game up for the first time in forever. Playing as Italy, told Germany to go to hell and forged the Novum Imperium Romanum out of me, Yugoslavia, Romania, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Conquered Ethiopia, Greece and Albania but not sure what to do now. It's May 1940 and WW2 finally kicked off between Germany/Japan/Hungary and France/Britain. Hmm. I think you already won the game and can proceed to quietly build a totalitarian Catholic pariah state until Mussolini finally dies sometime in the late 1950's or early 60's and the whole thing collapses. Actually, now that I think about it. There really should be some kind of epilogue depending on how well you played, sort of like how CK2 gives you a dynasty score and ranking at the end of a game. It's not like there's a shortage of world war 2 alternate histories to work with.

I just tried out the Byzantium mod and it's surprisingly fun. You start with Greece and the western Turkish coastline, 24 divisions and a bunch of bullshit national ideas for free cores on Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Turkey, and Romania. Once you've blitzed your way through that you can take the focus for 10% population conscription and start taking claims on Italy , Spain, France, Egypt and North Africa. It's still a Byzantium mod though, so there's a bunch of weird events about reconsecrating the Hagia Sophia and massacring Turkish civilians, and im sure it gets worse if you go full fascist.

The air game really is micro management hell , but by the time you get late enough into the game to worry about it you usually have the 450 xp death fighters anyway. Seriously , give a 1944 fighter about 400 xp worth of mods and it wipes out stock jet fighters.

I couldn't get into this game when it came out, but I just fired it up again and I can tell they put some serious work into streamlining it. The only thing still bugging me is air force micro management. There's also dozens of fun mods on the workshop now, I had a great campaign with the martian invasion mod. I'd love to see more wild stuff like that, and especially anything that ties into Stellaris , but I get the feeling that people who like a crazy game that constantly gets shaken up are just a small fraction of the fanbase.

I like War of the Worlds mod, but I think it would be better as an X-Com/Stellaris style thing , built up through events, instead of just starting the full blown alien invasion 2 days in.

The OP has some great tips on early game divisions to work towards, but is there a list of how you should be upgrading them in the mid game? Especially medium tank stuff.
