Hahaha my first game as Ireland is going great. Went Commie, joined the Comintern, once WW2 broke out declared on the UK to get back Norn Iron. We swept into Belfast without too much trouble; Monty came over with a single Infantry division but didn't have time to get situated so we pushed them out. Both sides immediately brought in all our friends, of course, so it's a full on Soviet-Allied slugfest. So I just checked the warscreen about eight months in:

  • Irish casualties: 485 brave sons of Ireland
  • Sino and Soviet casualties: 270k
  • Allied casualties: 460k
  • Almost 3/4 of a million dead and wounded because of Ireland

:laffo: keep fighting suckers, Ireland will emerge from this ruined world and be supreme. :ireland:

Am I missing something, or is there not a way to have a newly assigned division automatically slot into the Army's plans? I can do it by ctrl-clicking but I don't want to have to do that with every rear end in a top hat unit I ever build, I just want them to get assigned by the AI while I'm busy with, you know, running the war at a strategic level.

Game beats the poo poo out of HoI3 though, that and the weirdness of the Air orders are my only significant issues (and possibly naval, haven't played anyone with a navy yet though!).

Less significant issues I'd still like changed;

No ledger. I know you're not supposed to have an omniscient view of stuff, but it's still be incredibly useful to see my own stats in one, as well as allies and anyone we've got intel on. Most of this info is out there, but has to be tracked down across a bunch of different screens.
In the same vein I'd really love after-combat stats, I want to know how many men I killed and lost, equipment too, etc., and this is more than just grognardness - it's pretty important to know if you're a power who intends to win by attrition. Compromise by having the current system of no reports, reports available if you click on an icon where it took place (icon fades after, say, three days), or automatic popup. Then everyone can play with the level of info they want.
Where the Christ are the events? I don't need KR levels of event spam, sure, but something more than a news report once or twice a year would be nice as well.

I want to give special praise to the industrial/production side of things. I really, really dig the way things have been handled this time around, it gives you a great degree of control, lets you plan and react, and the fact that training doesn't directly rely on industrial output but rather your existing supplies is extremely good poo poo.

Not possible when assigning an already produced unit to an army specifically since the army can have multiple orders. You can assign the unit to the plan instead and it'll auto-slot into the army, though.

For stuff you're building you can click the little orb left of the pop-out province selection on the recruit screen, then click the front or plan arrow you want that batch of divisions auto-assigned to. The orb will gain a little arrow and change color to the army in question. Also works for immediately assigning new ships to fleets in the production screen.

I can't figure out how to make it work for garrison orders, though...

Thank you for this, and building on it - a little tooltip popped up for me, and it informed me that you can also right click on your army general's icon to assign production to the army as a whole. If you have an army dedicated entirely to garrisoning I suppose that would let you do what you're looking for.

So, Groogy, I've been pretty impressed by the AI in the main, but something weird happened in my Ireland game. Non-historical focuses. I went Communist and joined the Comintern, then declared on the UK to claim Northern Ireland, which we grabbed easily enough. I continued building up some forces, and after a few abortive naval attempts, nothing happened for awhile. Then the Allies sent a big ol' naval invasion my way and got into Belfast, which was great! There was a huge epic fight across half of Ireland and I was losing it - until without warning or apparent reason, they withdrew every single division. I just rolled back across all of Ireland and was back in the same situation I had been in.

To be clear though I'm a big fan of the AI being naval invasion-happy, you SHOULD have to keep your coasts garrisoned etc., and I remember the older games where such things were essentially unheard of, so I'm completely down with it. They do need some tweaking to be sufficient in strength, and properly followed up on, though.

Wrapped up my first full game as a major power, French Commune in this case. I went my own way and told Stalin to get hosed, but we all ended up on the same side in WW2. Hitler went nuts and declared on every single power in Europe execpt Portugal, Switzerland, and Sweden, so by the time French tanks rolled into Berlin in late '42, the Allies had a lot of members. Republican Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands were in the French Alliance. With US help we knocked out Italy, then the Germans were completely surrounded and they capitulated Christmas Eve, 1942.

Which just left Japan.

Christ Almighty, if anyone wants to feel that the A-Bombs were justified, try invading Japan in this game. :staredog: It took five years with them being the single remaining member of the Axis, with enormous landings by me, the Americans, and the Brits, and contributions by powers as varied as Canada and Yugoslavia. The simple problem was we just couldn't get the supply throughput needed to make headway, attacks would end within hours because our boys had nothing to shoot. On the other hand there were so many of us we couldn't be evicted either, and nobody had nukes or anything.

But in the end, after devoting massive industrial power to building naval bases in every province I could, we drained them and pushed them out.

Then the Soviets took an absolutely ridiculous share of the peace pie and within a couple months WW3 was on, but I'm sitting out for now, working on coups and building up nukes and then we'll show the world French Power. :france:

Imagine being the President who sent a million men to die in Patagonia and still lost.

This was taken the day the wars escalated and merged, so unless a lot happened in about two hours somehow, every single one of those dead Americans died fighting in the Andes or in their brief, abortive invasions of Mar del Plata. We took a kicking but I managed the front extremely closely and did encirclement, etc., where possible.

These days the yanks aren't the problem though, they apparently decided a naval invasion of southern China was a better use of men. The Allies got both Plurinational Bolivia and Second Brazilian Republic in and so I've been fighting against considerable numbers (Backed up by shitloads of UK troops; idk how they can spare the men because they're fighting across most of Western Europe in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and the Low Countries, and winning) but after a massive encirclement I've managed to stop Brazil enough to let me regroup and reinforce. Next up, pushing into Bolivia, then hopefully being able to finally make a drive on Rio. I've been trying to do that for two years now, but every time I've been ready to start I've suddenly had to use those units to respond to a fire someplace else. I didn't have even close to enough divisions to both secure my beaches and hold the Brazilian front, but I think I do now.

This game is so loving good.

I'm 90% sure those dots do not represent the only victory points. I had every single marked province in Brazil under my control but they didn't capitulate until I rolled through some more territory. I'm thinking air and/or naval bases also count?

Speaking of which I should never have conquered Brazil, the coastline is far too long to effectively garrison and instead of pushing onwards through the remnants of South America, my forces are tied down in constantly turning back naval invasions. :negative:

It's 1948. The Axis, aside from Turkey (who haven't fired a single shot in anger at anyone), has been dead and buried for half a decade. The Comintern and Allies have been fighting for seven years now.

Comintern Losses
  • USSR: 8.25m
  • French Commune: 1.81m
  • Republican Spain: 1.62m
  • Mexican Socialist Republic: 1.26m
  • Hellenic Republic: 1.23m
  • Italian People's Republic: 1.19m
  • Revolutionary Argentina: 1.12m
  • Others: 1.24m

Total Comintern Losses: 17.72 million

Allied Losses
  • USA: 7.15m
  • UK: 2.88m
  • Others: 6.15m

Total Allied Losses: 16.18 million

Allied has a huge number of countries but only the US and UK have more than a million losses each. Others of note though, are Finland's 155k (almost twice what they lost IRL), South Africa's 133k (compared to 12k IRL), Norway's 557k (One sixth of their 1939 population), ANZAC combined losses of 400k, Belgium with 713k (12,000 military dead IRL), and Ireland's 157k (Neutral IRL, imprecise figures on Irish volunteers who died in Allied services, but estimated around 4,000).

Both sides really are throwing everything at one another. I've been fighting for a decade to secure South America and maintain our shores, and I think I've finally got enough troops to achieve the latter. Shame for the Allies that my first nuke will be ready in less than a year.

Baby even when I'm dead and gone
You will always be my only one, my only one
When the night is calling
No matter who I become
You will always be my only one, my only one, my only one
When the night is calling

God I spent all weekend playing that crappy final fantasy mod with sepiroth or whatever I’ve never even played that series but hoi-anything is good in my eyes.

I'm glad you're enjoying it and I intend to turn more of the thread to it in time

Wow that sounds bad, and I've played that series. Play the Fallout mod, Old World Blues. It's good.

Why did you leave Japan intact what’s wrong with you

What the hell is a Japan? Do you mean Wutai?

Also thank you for the air war info over the last couple of pages, I never knew whether what I was doing was of any use or not. Now I'll have a better idea!
