HoI is much less of a sandbox where you can just gently caress around than other paradox games - youre better off setting a goal for yourself when you start a game (like getting cheevos)

For what its worth Ive been fighting a literal hellwar in China (9.3 million chinese casualties, 3.5 million japanese) as Mao, its late 43 and Ive had zero problems with the new Field Marshal system :shrug:

You can escalate the conflict which gives you more combat width but aside from going all the way to an actual war thats it.

Welp, I finally did it :china:

Japan got kicked out by 1945 and I spent the next few years building up my forces and infiltarting the KMT before starting the uprising sometime in late 1948. The United Front had most of its forces on the Indian and Mongolian borders so I basically did a mad dash in the east to get as much land as I could before they shipped their hordes against my troops. Then the war was a goddamn slog in which I basically whittled down something like two hundred KMT divisions that the Nationalists couldnt reinforce due to me gobbling up their factories, I lost about a million and a half versus something like 5 million KMT casualties. Didnt get Yunnan in the peace deal so I had to annex them separately afterwards. Next I'm going to eat Mongolia and Korea (I'd eat Tibet too but for some asinine reason the french decided to guarantee them) and then I get to go on a siberian adventure against Mega-Germany.

I also didnt get the Mao achievement so gently caress you Paradox I guess :argh:

Ive found that you really should focus on beating the japanese first before uniting china, you can eat Shanxi and maaaybe Xibei San Ma before the japanese come knocking. Just sit on the border until the nippon war machine runs out of steam around 1944-45 and then make a mad dash so you get Mengukuo and Manchuria under your control when the treaty of Nanjing fires - this gives you an industrial base to build yourself up while you infiltrate Kuomintang areas. The Nationalist divisions are mostly trash that loses straight fights against you once you equip yours properly. I made the KMT capitulate around 1949 and then ate the rest of my neighbours.

Have your landsturms hold the line north of Frankfurt and use your regular infantry & the trio of panzer/motorized/cavalry to cut them off in Bavaria. The AI is still helpless against semi-competent micro. Put all of your airforce to work in the south. Once youve wiped out their southern forces you can just walk over them on your march to Berlin.

Communism in Japan was basically wiped out in 1935 and they still gave them a path so I think the reasons have more to do with balance than historical accuracy.

They dropped a patch with a lot of fixes yesterday, for example now you cant spam russian volunteers as commie Japan and socialism with chinese characteristics no longer kicks you out of your faction. To me the most important one is Japan no longer getting locked out of its historical route if Germany or Italy stop being fash.
