I am hilariously bad at Paradox games that aren't CK2, so the getting a hang of it part could take a while!

I like what I've seen so far so I think I'll pick up the one that includes the season pass.

I'm a literal noob at this game (never got into the earlier games) and on my 3rd game as the German Republic I was able to defeat the USSR. Sure, it was after my initial invasion got mauled, but fortunately the world tension went up to 80% and I was able to join the allies. Overall the game is very accessible for a new player and it will only get better once some mechanics are a bit more fleshed out (air combat being my #1).

The only runs where I had enough planes were my Russian games and I had about 20k fighters at the end. Didn't fight against England so not sure if that was even enough to take them on, but everybody else fell.

In my current game as the USSR, the UK had ~45k (:staredog:) fighters by 1945 but I'm not sure about the quality. I'm hoping my rapidly growing jet air force will be enough to take them on.

HoI IV is pretty good and a lot less spergy. AI is a bit dumb, but it's way easier to get into than the prior games. All the earlier HoI games went like this for me: boot up, click a few tabs, look at the OOB, and then quit out to play something better.

Anyone have desync issues/fixes for saved MP games? A buddy and I are able to start off a game just fine (played probably 2ish hours and got up to 1939 last week), but when we go back and load up the game today I end up always a day or more behind making it unplayable (he's been the host for both sessions). Both of our PCs are new-ish (build in the last year or so) and if it was a internet connection problem I would expect it to have an effect at all times instead of just when we return to a saved game.

Really strange and some brief research on google really hasn't come up with anything.

You could try sending your friend the save outside of the game to see if there is some problem with your lobby uploading a bugged save. Or try using an earlier save from the effected one. Or load the save up in singleplayer; let a day pass then save again and try that one. (if you do this you'll want to use console to disable the AI so nothing gets terribly hosed up)

The fix was for me to host instead of him. :psyduck: Thanks for the suggestions though; we'll do some additional science to see what's up. It'd be strange to have to go back and forth with saves to keep the game from eating itself.

Also crushed the German's offensive against my wall of slavs. :black101:

So my third attempt, second at Germany seems to have failed. I couldn't manage to punch through Belgium with all their tons of various allied divisions who all seemed stronger than mine. Lost a million men. The final bullet through the cyborg was the Soviets declaring war and only by putting every singly divisions on the eastern front was I able to slow their advance to just very slow. Running out of equipment, guns, artillery and tanks kinda fast.

The only thing I haven't run out of is oil and rubber. Synthetic Refineries are pretty awesome. 120ish oil production and 60ish rubber. No one can sink those convoys. :toot:

What are good things to prioritize with research? I've been going with research speed and industry stuff first. Time to restart yet again.

I usually start with electronics/industry first as well as get a few of the land strategy (I forgot what they are called) things researched before the war as they take a bit of time to complete. As for your Germany run through, are you making sure all your divs are the correct width? How many divisions and what was their composition?

Edit: I too tried out the Apres Moi mod and it's probably given me the most challenge playing as the People's Republic of Germany. The initial civil war as tough and then helping all the Eastern European socialist republics with Russia was brutal. Poland then tried to get uppity and I had to roll through them like it was some alternate universe 1939 where the Continental System failed.

I think they were 19 with mostly infantry and some artillery. Had some engineering, recon, artillery and field hospital support companies too. No idea how many but I had been training more since the start of the game. There were some of the default light tank divisions too. It's pretty fun despite the confusion though.

Ah, ok. A few tips:

-You want to have division widths of 10 or 20. The max width of the combat front is 40 (maybe it's 80, I forget), so from what I've gathered the most efficient divs are those two numbers, except for generals who give you a bonus to combat width. If you have a general that does, that I think the proper widths are 11/21.

-By 1940 you should already be swapping out light tanks for medium tanks in your armor templates. Take a look at your focuses; there are some early ones with the USSR that allow you to get the tech for medium tanks pretty early. Also remember to research SPGs (the little icons on the right of the tech card) so you can put them in your armor divisions for additional soft attack. If you were still using the default light tank template that's probably why your forces weren't as effective as they could be.

I usually make 4-8 really good divisions and then a bunch of fast/tough but cheaper ones. The good divisions are for punching holes in entrenched front lines, the not as good but still decent divisions are for following behind and preventing an armored counter-attack. When not in use, keep them behind your lines and use them to counter-attack yourself. Also these are really great for reinforcing your port defense guys.

What determines your good armored divs from your cheap breakthrough fillers? Just plain tanks/Mot with maybe one or two support companies? I usually just have a jack-of-all-trades template when playing with my buddies.

Gonna third Germany; you'll actually have the capability to do stuff and play with tanks/planes/etc. Plus, you can both 1) drive when the war starts so there's usually no rush to avoid getting beat up as if you were playing France and 2) there's enough alt history trees that you can also avoid playing as the bad guys.

Playing small countries is actually more of an advanced/harder start as you have to play optimally to actually do well and even then with all the supply/infrastructure changes you probably won't be making any tank divisions or large air forces.

Edit: Maybe the US too, but there's a lot of stuff to do with navies that I personally hate dealing with as well as a long wait to get into the war (or at least do anything) unless you actively try to join in early or go an alt history route and pick your own fights.

eh you just blitz down it as fast as possible while purging the navy when needed, the only downside is that you won't be able to pick more than one or two ministers/ideas before its over

True, I personally just find it boring and adds more busy work in which I have to make sure to time focuses/purges. The US has something like it in which if you know how to game the system you never have to worry about Congress but you still need to remember to go back and click on a button.

If you know how to navigate it then yeah, it won't have any major effect on someone new to the game learning the rest of the mechanics.

I still have not idea why the devs think I'm gonna research 1944 naval stuff; especially the big ship techs. It takes so long unless you mod it to use.more than the vanilla amount of dockyards.

I don't mind the designers as much in SP as I tend to pause a lot, but gently caress that poo poo when I wanna play with some buddies. Then I have that garbage, probably some focus tree timing, pointless decision mini-games, espionage (which is as fun as every other implementation of spying i.e. lame), etc. to juggle. Supper annoying. It was manageable with the tanks/planes/boats being techs and then improving stats.

Edit: I think some players on YouTube already determined that the feel is attack/defense have the most effect on how good your planes do. Agility seems baked into the airframes you research.

Spying mechanics have been either boring or tedious (usually both) since MOO/the 90's. Tons of other games have tried (and failed) so I basically just keep my spies on defense as it's one less annoying thing with little to no major benefits I have to worry about.

BadOptics

Gort posted:

You're kind of getting the worst of both worlds playing like this - you're spending the resources required to get spies, but you're getting basically no benefit from them. If you don't want to engage with the espionage mechanics, just don't build a spy agency, and use the civilian factory production on something else.

But if you do build a spy network, options like collaboration governments are very strong, as are the reductions to enemy planning and dig-in bonuses in the areas your spies have networks.

Yeah, I just mean if I ever do remember to even build one; which is rare as the civ cost is not worth it imo

Edit: That's maybe the US because the just how much industrial power they have but then it's again, not as useful as drowning the Germans in armor.

It should be some prompt where you are forced to select two contradictory requirements ("demand a jet fighter but also put bombs on it +50% research time") and the game pre-builds you garbage. Also whenever you choose a designer other than Porsche/Kurt Tank the game overrides the player and gives you insanely dumb heavy tanks/aircraft that have 0 reliability.
