Maybe stick to just swapping fascism/fascist with nationalism/autocracy and calling it a day?

A page late but I'd say make it nationalist/liberal/socialist with somewhat cross-ideological factions, assuming that doesn't break everything. For example, NATO is liberal with some nationalist democracies (socialists would probably want to withdraw), CIS is mostly nationalist dictatorships/dominant-faction democracies, Cuba and pals are socialist dictatorships and democracies, Arab League is a mix of nationalists and sometimes socialists, and so on. That would probably be pretty general and uncontroversial, and I doubt there's a good way to map three ideologies to three factions in the modern world, especially considering you probably want most countries to have at least some internal factional conflict.

To clarify, you are using "liberal" in its classical sense, yes? I'm wondering if there is terminology that I could map to these ideologies without making them too politically volatile. (A part of me thinks that this is probably one of the big reasons Paradox has never done a modern simulation - the nationalists and politically sensitives are going to lose their minds no matter what decisions I make. Good thing I don't have to give a poo poo.)
Pretty much, I was thinking that any party that more or less accepts liberal ideas about democracy, or at least economics (i.e. capitalism), and aligns generally towards NATO/the West would be in the liberal faction. So most mainstream parties in the West itself and secularists and westernizers elsewhere. You could also call them democrats, but that might be a little vaguer and it might be possible to have a liberal dictatorship or dominant-party system, as in Japan under the LDP or post-coup liberal governments in Latin America.

The unfortunate part about this idea is that, in the 90s in particular, most western governments will be totally dominated by liberals. I think that's accurate and makes sense, but it's a little boring from a gameplay perspective. Also, I would hope that players of HOI4 would be familiar with the broad definition of liberal, but I'm really not sure.

I really need to get my hands on the game so I can start diving into the game files. Waiting four days to pour over .txt files is excruciating!
Once you're up and running and I've had a chance to actually play the game some (I picked the wrong month to be out of the country :() I'd be interested in contributing if you need help. It seems to me that out of all paradox games HOI4 may have the most potential for an interesting modern day mod that doesn't instantly devolve into wackiness.

Speaking of broken trees, can anyone see the problem with Pact of Steel here?

It requires Germany and Italy to both be fascist, or both be non-aligned - which makes sense. But then there is an extra condition check at the top simply requiring Italy to be fascist. So, if Germany does not stay fascist then Italy can't pick Pact of Steel because if they stay fascist then Germany and Italy do not have the same ruling party, but if they convert to non-aligned then the check for fascism is not met. This would be fine except all the focuses in red below it require Pact of Steel as a prerequisite.

Why complain about it here instead of reporting it in the paradox bug forum? They forgot to delete a line in a script, it's an easy mistake to make and easy to fix if you tell them about it. Be the change you want to see in your mapgames.

That's because PDS is incrementally upgrading and adding new focus trees with each patch and the USSR tree hasn't been improved since the initial release. In 2016. New Zealand got a tree in the Commonwealth-focused DLC.

The lame USSR tree is imo the worst thing about HOI4 right now, followed closely by the fact that the game is balanced around the USSR always losing to Germany without the Allies' help.

hi you are talking to 50% of the content team

Other teams don't get way more resources. Development teams at Paradox are tiny by industry standards. At some point during the development of Holy Fury someone on the forums was like "I would be very surprised if there were more than 50 people working on CKII right now", which was a good laugh for the team of 7 that actually did. HoI4 is on the upper end of the scale, we are about the size of Stellaris. 5 Programmers, a Game Director, a Game Designer, a UX designer, an artist, two embedded QA and two Content Designers (that's me!).

The decision which DLC is made when is not based primarily on what I'd like to do (because in that case you'd have the Soviet rework already), there is a lot of office politics about limited resources (like acceptance testing from central QA or additional art resources) involved. So we were given a timeframe, looked at the rough estimate of what reworking the Soviet Union plus additional cool features would take and decided it couldn't be done in the timeframe we had.

Thanks for posting here Archangel, I appreciate the transparency.

Yep, I read a couple of dev diaries and can confirm. They dedicate a third of Japan's political tree to crushing communists and the first faq entry for Japan is "Will there be a left-wing path?", "No and Never." No left-wing path for the US. The USSR's political paths are Stalinism and less conservative but more repressive and violent Stalinism. Only Labour and the Conservatives can win elections in the UK. Labour can actually choose to cooperate with the ILP and CPGB but nothing comes of it. Why bother putting it in the mod? They can call it historical if they want but I call it boring.

Still in the same Japan campaign, now facing a new problem. I conquered Yunnan and Guanxi, but Thailand refused to join my faction. So now when I try to invade Burma solely from the small strip of China east of Mandalay, I have terrible supply.

I addressed the issue somewhat by paring down the number of divisions I had stationed there, but now I'm finding it difficult to launch an attack. Which of the following would help my supply problem:

- improve infrastructure in Tokyo
- improve size of the port in Tokyo
- improve infrastructure in Zhangjiang (port of entry in China)
- improve port in Zhangjiang
- improve infrastructure in the provinces from which I will be attacking

Is it all of the above?

In my last campaign I mostly attacked from Thailand so I didn't really have much of a supply problem, but maybe it's because I was spread across a larger number of provinces.

As the previous posts said and you probably found out, directly increasing supply is not usually the most effective solution to supply shortages. But I'll hazard a direct answer to your question too.

- no. I'm pretty sure infra only affects land supply
- no. As Japan you should already have enough ports in the home islands
- only if Zhangjiang is a bottleneck
- only if most or all of the supplies are coming from the port
- yes, if there are no upstream bottlenecks

You may already know this but bottlenecks, if there are any, are shown in the detailed supply tooltip when you hover over a state's supply in the supply mapmode.
