The "I won't be around" likely refers to Through-the-Hole-Derek who Ethan knew. The Married-to-Kori-Derek is still around and doing better than Through-the-Hole-Derek was at this point in his life. If you check Update 2 again, the first thing Past-Ethan ever does with the Hollow Pen is close the weird Hole in his bedroom.
