Brawnfire posted:Also known as the universe where they listened to Worf's tactical advice. Worf with those crazy ideas like: Unknown entity or ship? Raise shields and energize phasers! Now, now, Mr. Worf, that might seem like *boom* hull integrity now at 67% Don't let Geordi beam over to the Pakled ship without an armed escort? C'mon, Mr. Worf, they're completely harmless and oh poo poo Geordi's been kidnapped. Abandon your son on Ceti Alpha V? Nonsense, Mr. Worf, that's ridiculous, he can grow up to be an exemplary model of a crewmate's child just like Dr. Crusher's...helm, set course 342 mark 14, transporter room 3, prepare to beam one to the surface, no environmental suit.

Sure, but if you take Worf's advice and turn to Page 49, the illustration is just the Enterprise exploding on a big inky black page. Doesn't even say why.

I'm tempted to be an rear end in a top hat and say Spock's Brain, and then I'm tempted to be a saint and say Balance of Terror, so why don't we split the difference, round up, and go for Arena?

On my first watch of TOS I was taken by surprise with Court Martial. It’s not one of those cultural osmosis episodes so I truly didn’t know what the resolution was going to be and I think that gave it a boost in my estimation

One of the things about Court Martial is how loving bold it was. The first admiral we see in the series, he's presiding over Kirk, and he's black. His authority is never questioned in the slightest. 1967!

The Kirk-Uhura kiss was edited to be as it was because Paramount was worried about hillbillies torching local Paramount affiliates, if they show the kiss on camera. The original Star Trek was really, really, ahead of its time. And that thing is really the biggest praise for Gene Roddenberry, along with the positivist viewpoint for human future.

Review: Not much to be said; Kirk shoots a gorn with a bazooka and decides to show mercy. Obviously an episode with pop culture cachet and that impacted many future Treks, including being something of a self-imposed albatross around the neck of SNW. I personally enjoyed ENT's brief Gorn moment, wherein mirror universe Archer in a moment of brilliance remembered that starships have gravity generators and used that knowledge to crush a green masterpiece of CGI.

The best thing IMO about this episode is it has Charles Napier playing against all his future types as Adam, the lute-plucking hippie. Checking Memory Alpha (because I didn't remember the character's name), he also composed the songs from the episode. He later went on to reappear in Trek as the general in the DS9 episode "Little Green Men" (the Ferengi at Roswell episode). My two favorite roles of his are as the lead singer of the Good Old Boys in the Blues Brothers and the voice of Duke Phillips from The Critic. This has been your "Hey, It's That Guy" sidebar moment of the day.

The compromise they made with the studio was that they'd film both so that they could keep fighting about it after the episode had filmed and then the studio could inevitably force them to use the non-kiss take, but yeah, Shatner deliberately mugged the camera and crossed his eyes every take of the non-kiss version.
