Has anyone maybe thought that high speed is not the way to go? What if we had low speed trains, like 5 mph or so, that you could jog alongside. But then you could take a rest when you got tired of the footpath.

High speed trains are cool. I much prefer riding on a train over a plane. Going through security is a nightmare and I can never get comfortable on a plane. I wish we weren't so reliant on cars.

Never because unlike all those laughably tiny european "nations" our country is huge.. really huge.... you could fit around 100 UK's into the USA. So high speed trollys or whatever just will not cut it around here. Also we already constructed the interstate system which iis way better in every way up to and including how it lets you sit behind the wheel of a two ton super-advanced machine and speed along of your own volition like a super hero.
