To be fair, the Libs plan to tax ttr schemes will hit people who use it and that is by no means only high income earners.

So the former rules were that a person could start a Transition to Retirement Pension (so withdraw super without retiring) and the earnings on investments that were deemed to be related to that pension were tax free in the fund (essentially we sent the info to an actuary and they gave us a tax free %)

What this meant was that all accountants and financial advisers would get our clients to start these so they could withdraw their money from super, but then just offset that by contributing back to super, so their net income in hand would be exactly the same but they would be paying less tax in the SMSF since it was tax-free AND since they were salary sacrificing their income back into the superfund they also saved on income tax. I'm simplifying some areas, but basically it was one of those tax laws that meant we were encouraging something to happen that was only done for tax purposes, which in my view is always a Dumb Law.

So it was being abused more by the rich end of town, was it still helping others? Arguably yes, but it's only 15% tax on a percentage of investment earnings so I don't think it's too much of a burden in completely removing another super loophole.

Also I really don't care that Julie Bishop wasn't on top of this. I don't care if the minister for X doesn't know the full information about issue Y, I care what the party's position actually is. This gotcha crap is annoying.

No. I'm not even surprised he's doubling down.

In other news, have a bit more fuel for the fire:

quote:

When the Reserve Bank of Australia cut interest rates last month there was always a risk that it might reinflate the housing bubble. It was a risk the central bank was prepared to take.

But a new spike in prices over the past month suggests the housing soufflé has started to rise yet again.

The unexpected leap in the value of homes has taken the annual growth rate to 10 per cent across the board and to more than 13 per cent in Sydney and Melbourne, according to CoreLogic's home value index. And it has taken the median dwelling price in Sydney to $782,000 and in Melbourne to $590,000.

I don't understand all this talk of a Green Liberal preference deal. To the best of my knowledge there isn't one and it just seems like a way of attacking the Greens brand by stealth?

It's all over the media and starting to trickle into ALP ads but I seem to recall DiNatalie ruling this out multiple times.
