Its depressing. The same is true of consoles taking over gaming from the PC market. Playing Doom recently was like a breath of fresh air, but it also makes it so obvious how much we've sacrificed for dumb console-first design.

Doom plays fantastically with a controller, actually. There's no reason for a console shooter to be sluggish and bad, that's been clear since Vanquish.

Every time I see a beautiful but bad 3D platformer it makes me appreciate Mario Galaxies even more. There was just such a tremendous amount of work put into how those games work which is a completely separate issue from the visuals, enemies or level design. It's so hard not to make these games clunky, not to mention smooth and tight.

Good news for Yooka-Laylee: Banjo was always clunky.

Cook Serve Delicious is a great game but I really wish the Delicious Emily series of games were available on steam since I feel like they're also a really good standout time management restaurant game thing

Like, if Cook Serve Delicious is when you take something like dine & dash and innovate on it and try to make it really tense but also really good and rewarding, then the Delicious Emily games are basically if you take Dine & Dash and try to make it good while sticking in that same kind of formula, just improving the mechanics around it.

It's like how you have people that try to make tower defense games and they usually have some kind of gimmick to them to help them stand out, but then you have defense grid whose "gimmick" is just being a really really good tower defense game

CSD is actually a direct update of a Japanese PS1 game called Ore no Ryomi!

Why? You can't say "what's everyone's favorite new series" because most new IPs are like Bloodborne/TLOU and only have one game to start off with (no sequel announced etc)

On the bright side, the reason the ports of The Evil Within are so bad is because the game runs on id tech 5, which is an absolutely horrible engine that hates whatever you're trying to run it on and has a constant desire for a painful suicide. XCOM runs on Unreal. So maybe the XCOM 2 port will be better.

XCOM 2 has performance issues even on high end hardware, and while that's been fixed to an extent there's a lot that could go wrong.

When I play a game these days, and there is a friendly looking dog near the character, and I'm not in some high-stakes situation like being shot at or chased, I feel real let down if there isn't a button to pet the dog. My disappointment is considerable, and although I do not review games, my internal appreciation of the game takes a slight hit.

If I can pet dogs, you better believe I'm going to go well out of my way to pet the doggies.

There are incredibly well animated cats in The Witcher 3 and no pet button, what a waste.

Shovel Knight is a good game that I think is a little overpraised. I don't mad that it is because it's a good game that people should play but it didn't really blow me away like the hype made me think it would. I might have liked it more if it hadn't been so hyped up but who know?

There's a couple things that Shovel Knight does that most games, even games that I really like, don't pull off as well. They are:

Compelling and consistent look and feel. It isn't a direct match to an NES game, but every element of the game that couldn't be done on an NES is there for a reason. The result is a game that doesn't play exactly like an NES game, but instead how I remember NES games feeling. The story stuff is punchy and does a lot without wasting your time.

Great pacing. It doesn't waste time with tutorials and instead teaches you about each gameplay element through the level design. Each world has a compelling new idea that's introduced in a clever way. If you're stuck on something you can go do something else for a while, and there's lots of cool optional stuff.

Layered and expressive mechanics. Even before we bring in the alternate characters, there's a bunch of compelling options on how to get through levels, and how one person plays the game is going to be way different than how someone else does. This creates replay value, and even if you only play through once it means you can pick and choose the options you enjoy.

Sorry to kind of dork out! I think Shovel Knight is a great example of how you don't necessarily need to do something really original in order to make something that people really enjoy, you just need loads and loads of talent I guess. It obviously doesn't click with everyone, and I think it's harder than it should be, but man what a good game.

I don't even know what to think of this kind of property crossover madness. It's like when me and my buddy who had 6 older brother would spend 2 hours setting up armies of batman, he-man, gi Joe, Transformers, WWF, looney tunes and mario figures to fight each other, except now it's giant corporations doing it. The cynical part of me thinks that something like this is just a big pile of nothing with a candy coated shell of things I recognize, where absolutely none of what was interesting or fun about the properties I love will come through in a meaningful way. But at the same time it looks genuinely fun and respectful to the original material.

It's funny that they're leaning so hard on crossovers after Disney Infinity died, which for some unfathomable reason only let you use the Star Wars characters in the Star Wars levels, the Toy Story characters on Toy Story levels, etc. So yea, this might be a cynical cash in but at least it's not locking you out of doing what you want to do with your toys in order to preserve brand purity or some nonsense.

It's fun, polished, and super breezy. The soundtrack is good too!

That said, I'm a little surprised by the effusive praise it gets. It's a solid game but the space pirate theme doesn't really come across, it's all very generic. The different characters also all play kind of the same, and I never really got attached the same way I get with an xcom squad.

But yea, that's just the things that keep it from being a classic, it really is a fun game otherwise.
