Project Completed - Colossus attendants' training

Even without Munkherel, None proceeds apace with the training and soon Buris has memorized a host of symbols and started to understand basic principles of the Colossus's death-in-life. She is a giant made of metal, and she needs sunlight to stay awake and move. But the fire in the sky steals her light before she has enough, and so she slumbers. But None knows how to protect her light. It takes at least two, preferably three, but None assures Buris that it would be easy (if time-consuming). She knows enough to lead or assist in the ritual now.

Project Completed – Raid the north

Zaaya is resplendent in her return. She is draped in the white cloth of the northerners-- a hundred different strips all tied in bows and ribbons around her chest and arms and head--and it whips behind her like a live beast as she rides. Her captives (so many captives!) are half-dead from the trek back and can barely keep up with the horses they are tied to. They are weak and sickly and hungry and injured but they are hers. And, as far as she's concerned, they're just as good as those owned by the Ziyarites.

Some think they would make a good sacrifice in the new temple.

Spring – Week 10

quote:

Where are you storing your food? Why is this a risky place to store things?

The Ziyarites do as they did out in the steppes with food stores kept in the central most yurt. Or, hut, in this case. The thralls, hungry as they are, try and stay far from that location though. Their eyes watch the swamp instead for the things that such an opulent collection might attract.

Action – Start a Project: Prayers are lifted. Speeches are crafted. Compromises discussed. Spears sharpened. One way or another, the tribe will come together again.

There’s a giant, man-made structure on the map. Where is it? Why is it abandoned?

The landscape of giant wheels and pipes to the southeast have long been a mystery. Supposedly they turned poison into sweet water, but some legends say they were used to turn water into food for the metal servants of our ancients. In any case, no one has ever seen water come from its pipes, no matter how much it has rained within its open pits, and nothing good grows near its grounds. To eat from an animal who has eaten near the strange metal and concrete grounds is to risk death, or so the stories say---why risk seeing if it's true when so many other hunting grounds exist?

Taking 1 Contempt in response to human sacrifice proposal.

Action - Journey to the Colossus

The night's sky fires begin again. Amid the bickering over sacrificing captives, enslaving them, or what have you, None packs his strange cans of food, a mysterious locked box, and other supplies into his wheeled metal vehicle. Buris packs her own supplies and the metal conveyance leaves with a loud reverberation and dirt kicked into the air. Munkherel tells those who ask that the plan was to hurry to the Colossus as soon as the burning lights had begun.

Project Completed - Journey to the Colossus

Munkherel Buris is surprised at how quickly the steppes are crossed, even though None quickly leaves the Line and takes a circuitous route to the boglands. But more surprising is that a trio of Blue Promise Breakers stand waiting, holding some sort of glowing rope that is a strange contrast to the dark skies so recently full of its own uncanny luminescence. When she and None exit the vehicle, one of the trio enters and begins removing None's tools. They talk with him in a language she doesn't understand, then one puts a hand on her shoulder and smiles. "Our brother returns with a new sister. We welcome all who the share Light That Binds As It Dances." And then they take her and None to the Colossus, where None climbs up and disappears into a hatch in its head, and Munkherel Buris is bidden to enter an aperture in its leg. It shuts her in firmly and will not open.

Summer - Week One

Predators and bad omens are afoot. What measures do you take to keep everyone safe and under surveillance?

Do not reduce project dice this week.

The bog beasts go wild the day after the Colossus begins pulsing with light. The Blue Promise Breakers ignore them, and the beasts do likewise, but the Ziyarites find defending themselves a full-time task. After Kurik and Daneel are each gravely wounded, the Ziyarites unyoke their horses from the fields and ride hard for the Dome. They shut themselves in with provisions and plot their return.

The stirring of the Colossus wakes other beasts, too. Strange and vicious creatures burst out from boltholes all over the steppes, dark snake-like things with legs and venomous fangs and claws. The traditionalists lose a few horses at first, but thankfully no people die. The village carefully monitors any sign of disturbance in the earth near their yurts and begin to engage in regular patrols to kill the walking serpents wherever they find them.

Action - Discover Something New

While fortified in the Dome, Urlaan in his boredom explores the lower levels. He comes across an odd black object with a small pulsing red light. When he touches it, a glass aperture turns blue-white and moving images appear before him! He passes his hands through the people and things in the air, and they are as ghosts. The black box speaks, gibberish at first, but then something close to our community's language. And it flashes pictures of the wheels and pipes, speaking of how it transforms bad water into good, and how the Dome somehow gives the wheels and pipes the strength to work.

Finally, a traditionalist horse steps forward to nuzzle her Ziyarite sister and that's all it takes.

Project Completed - New Code of Laws

Perhaps the heavenly court has blessed our people. Perhaps the spirits of our ancestors fill the void of our traditions with forgotten wisdom, bubbling up unexpectedly from our mouths and deeds. Or perhaps it is simply that the skies are clear, our horses swift, and the world full of splendor and spoils yet to be taken. Whatever the cause, our Sarangerel, Golit, Aspas, Ziya, and the other notables of our reunited community quickly come to agreement on a new set of laws for our people.

We adopt a code with basic precepts that draw broad outlines and leave much interpretation to the community for specific instances. Paramount is that the life of one of our own is sacrosanct, and our horses after that, and never shall we take the life of either in any circumstance. Outsiders and slaves are subject to whim and have no rights.

Action - Discover Something New

Rousing from its slumber, the Colossus raises its arms to the sky. Beacons flash all through the week, spears of light splitting the black even so far as our yurts lie. And one day, the lights stop and new terrible, wondrous things are in the sky.

The Colossus is not alone. Slowly its companions move through the sky, cycling up and down the border between us and the boglands, over and over.

Though the trail was old, Zaaya and her warriors were able to track the remaining Blue Promise Breakers from the abandoned Ziyarite homestead west towards the Colossus. It was unclear if they were helping dig the living metal monstrosity from the mud by choice or coercion. It was clear, though, that the Colossus was stuck. And that it was impossibly huge. The warriors watched from a distance with mouths agape and even Zaaya hesitated to spur a charge towards the rusted beast the size of a mountain. And the terrible things in the sky? It seemed dangerous. Suicidally dangerous.

A gift from the celestial court! Days of mighty winds flow from the mountains down to the steppes, and even from our distance vantage point, we can see the pillars of smoke and fire diminish and finally die.

Action - Discussion

Now that our land is the home of gods and demons, we must decide whether to stay and trust that the heavens ultimately favor us... or leave this confusion and misery behind to seek a new life in the distant West.

Autumn – Week 3

Someone leaves the community after issuing a dire warning. Who? What is that warning?
Aspas and her closest followers are more than reluctant to continue West. They cry that the gods will not forgive those who abandon them, and then speak to us no more. The next day, they are gone.

Action – Discover Something New: While the rest of the community debates Aspas' warning, Lisandru cradles Nobody and listlessly watches the streams that cross this new land. He only perks up when he sees something flash beneath the water – fish! Dense columns of them, migrating from North to South!

Project Completed -- Collect Dreams
Tuul mumurs to herself constantly now. Every waking moment goes to the recitation of the community's dreams. She doesn't want a single one to be forgotten. Even the ones from those who left.

Especially the ones from those left.

Autumn – Week 4

The strongest among you dies. What caused the death?

Aspas rode a powerful stallion -- dark and a strong and fast and befitting her station as high priestess. It was in every way healthy and viril and yet, upon crossing back onto the old lands, the beast lay down to rest and never awoke. Her followers look to her for meaning in this sign. She isn't sure what to say.

Action – Discover something new: The earth continues to reject the presence of the blasphemous. Smoke rises to the east and dulls the wine-red sky to the color of old blood.

Autumn - Week 5

Something goes fowl and supplies are ruined.

Add a new Scarcity.

Many of our falcons still swoop onto the eastern grasslands to find their prey. But the food they bring back is unhealthy, and soon they lose feathers, then strength, then life entirely. Only the falcons feasting on the newly discovered fish stay healthy.

Action - Start a New Project

We lost our land, but we have our dreams. We lost our horses, but we have fish. We lost our priestess, but we have faith. We lost our unity, but we came together when we needed. And now we must guarantee our future. Some say that is to stay here a while, but are we simple fishermen or masters of the horse? Some wish to simply go back as Aspas did, but are we dumb beasts to scurry back on instinct or are we blessed with insight to see when a new path is needed?

Some say that path is to leave, but Azad says we cannot leave unless we are whole. We need Buris, Aspas, and the others who left. He and a couple of others each take a remaining horse and ride out to try to bring our wayward clanmates back to us.

Azad and his companions swiftly reach Aspas and hers. The priestess is sullenly transfixed by the awful sky; the others warn their rescuers of what happened to her stallion and the group turns back with heavy hearts, taking Aspas with them. This place is no longer our own.

Their shock and joy is indescribable when they find that Sarangerel and Munkherel have returned by themselves! They were far from idle as we escaped – they tell everything of their journey to the Nest, how Munkherel spoke to the gods, how they rode North behind the veil of fire and crossed through the mountains hampered by unseemly winds. Their efforts were ceaseless, and finally they came back to us. Lisandru and Munkherel are overjoyed, though some find the tale of calling down the gods dubious.

Of Buris or anyone else, there is no trace.

Action – Start a Project: Horsemen or fishermen, we will need food to survive in the coming Winter. Our need is doubly urgent now that so many of the birds have died. Given that, the work is slow going – fish are clumsily gathered by the spear or the rare net. It's thralls' work, but we have none.

You spend the week quaranting and treating the disease. Project dice are not reduced this week.

There are yellowleaf ferns that grow just off the river. They seem to make the horses sick. They're not deadly but they serve as a reminder that there is much to learn about our future.

Action – Start a Project: Thrall work makes for sore hands. It feels unnatural, even if it is for survival. Eyes scan the east and scouts quietly ride further and further each day.
