63rd National Senshado Tournament Battle Reports. Bracket: /a/ did some translations for the KMM v. St. Gloriana fight in the (other) semifinal: quote:We sort of know. Desert terrain, Maho alone on the hill, and the British have a firing range disadvantage. Black Forest bombarded from 2.4 km away as the Brits approached and many of the 11 Matildas got taken out first. At that point the Crusaders were scouting to find the flag tank, and the Cromwell was responsible to generate as much dust as it can to obscure them from the eyes of the enemy. But as the Brit forces were approaching the main enemy force that they could see, Maho had a separate force that ambushed the Brits from their backline, and it turned into a close range brawl after that that had the Brits surrounded. quote:One thing I didn't translate was that Darjeeling knew in advance that Miho the Vice Commander transferred away, and she was the one who used to coordinate the tank teams to carry out Maho's orders. The tactic Darjeeling used assumed that Black Forest would have coordination problems after losing Miho, as Maho is not that good a communicator herself. As for the 2nd round battle between Continuation and KMM: I don't have it saved anymore, but from what I remember of the translations (also from /a/), it was said that Continuation Academy apparently almost pulled off an upset of KMM. The Finns are specced for cold weather and swamp terrain, but for their battle, they (also) ended up in the desert. The KMM were well prepared for both desert and Continuation so they advanced and fired in order from long range. But Continuation is apparently full of fantastic drivers so they basically did a charge and actually succeeded into getting into close range. IIRC, they, for sure, took out 3 tanks and may have taken out half or so. The team leader's tank (i.e. Mika's) was the last to go down, fighting furiously. Apparently, the spectators really liked the fight.

Kyte posted:I kinda wanna see a battle before Miho left KMM because the team sounds scary af. It also better explains why in the series KMM fell apart so easily. Not only was their combat doctrine inflexible, they'd just lost a key element to their teamwork. Same! Arbite posted:So during the TV series they watched Kelly's Heroes, but what was the video we saw a few seconds in the film? Jintor posted:Apparently they're watching 1941 by Spielberg? "Operation Mifune" refers to Toshiro Mifune, one of the actors in the film! He portrays a Japanese officer of the submarine and orders the firing on the ferris wheel, which ends up rolling into the ocean. Kyte posted:What's interesting is that despite that social awkwardness she was apparently very highly valued in the Black Forest team as she was vice-commander and as such in charge of coordinating everyone. Maybe she just had no idea how to meet new people 'cause Maho was always around to introduce her. Well, meeting people socially as friends is different than interacting with people in a more business setting (which senshado almost is for her pre-Ooarai). And in Little Army 1, she said she never really made friends because they couldn't relate to her and senshado. That's why Emi and Co. were a big deal for her. So, I haven't read the manga version of the GUP anime - and I'm not sure how canon it is given that the animators feel free to disregard it (see Anzio battle) - but I've heard other people who've read it comment that Miho was apparently the glue of the team and that morale crashed when she left. Maho had to spend time rebuilding the morale of KMM. (That was also part of why Erika was mad at Miho.) One other thing I've seen around: We know that Miho used to run in a Tiger 1 with 217 markings. Maho, of course, runs 212. But when Erika is promoted to vice commander, she gets a Tiger 2 instead of the 217 markings. In fact, KMM doesn't seem to field it at all. The suggestion is that Maho was holding off on using 217 just in case Miho came back, essentially holding the tank for her. Katreus fucked around with this message at 02:55 on Jun 10, 2016 |

filthychimp posted:Upon rewatching, I was pretty struck by the fact it made a lot of sense for Maho and their mother to treat Miho so coldly. After the river incident, they probably had a huge fight that ended with Miho quitting senshado forever, and her asking to be transferred to Oarai so she wouldn't have to play tanks anymore. Given Little Army 1... TBH, she's always been in her sister's shadow for Shiho though. (Maho has never thought this though.) It doesn't seem like Shiho's ever really liked Miho's sense for senshado because Miho's struggled with the Nishizumi style of win at all costs since the very beginning and Shiho's known this. See: Miho questioning Shiho re: shooting down an enemy flag tank rushing to rescue a tank on Maho's side that was in trouble and Shiho's response. Maho treats her coldly because she has to uphold being the perfect heir / 'face' for the Nishizumi style. Shiho just treats Miho badly because she fundamentally disagrees with Miho's style of senshado and thinks of it as a farce and by extension, Miho. There was some discussion that with Maho's declaration in LA1, Miho willingly following Maho into KMM probably made Maho feel really ambivalent. What was the point of being the perfect heir so that Miho could live freely and develop her own senshado if Miho doesn't actually take advantage of said freedom? OTOH, of course, Maho loves Miho and I imagine she does enjoy having Miho at / on her side and doing senshado together. She's probably still ambivalent re: Ooarai, but the final where Miho showed off her senshado style and won with it? That's exactly what Maho sacrified so much for. It's a personal win for her. Edit: First episode has some really strange lines though that makes Maho and KMM look a lot worse than they are, especially given the revelations later on re: Miho's importance to KMM's team. Specifically, that her mother and sister just expected her to go into senshado, that this is the first time someone cared about her feelings, and that she doesn't really have good memories of senshado. The last one is probably just the end of the KMM final and fallout overwhelming any good memories, but the rest... The almost crippling lack of self-confidence is both expected given Shiho's probable disposition toward Miho but also really strange when fit in with other information and Miho's battle performance. In the sound drama, it's noted she's always running around, her family is poor, and she has 18 siblings (?!) or something like that. But she really tries to match up with the others re: grace / manners (to... misc. effect) and looks up to Darjeeling. quote:I'm also not quite sure how I feel about three colleged aged girls getting drunk while trying to get to know their elementary(?) school aged Commander in an almost obsessive way. Well, it's the same as how some people treat Maho. Given that they call her mom the Master, they're probably also Shimada-ryu students so they'd look up to her, especially since Alice is basically a genius. But yeah, it's a little... much. Alice is 12 IIRC so she's middle school. Edit: Jintor posted:her entire team shamed her afterwards as well didn't they? And if last year's tournament was the same as this year's, the finals against Pravda would've taken place at the end of the year (since The Movie appears to take place during a school break, and they mention that they wish they at least got the time until April when the school year actually ends for the 3rd years to graduate). Miho only transferred at the beginning of the new school year, so she would've had a full semester of basically being ignored/shamed. Did they? IIRC, it was mentioned (maybe in the manga or LN version?) that KMM has strict regulations re: bullying, but that 3/4 crew members that Miho saved were ostracized and eventually transferred or otherwise left the school and senshado such that Miho felt she failed at protecting them. Not sure if KMM would actually shame their vice commander...? Especially if she was the one that KMM crew felt most close to and of course, she's a Nishizumi. Maybe they just tried to ignore and skirt the whole conversation out of politeness and it ended up making Miho feel alienated and alone - that KMM didn't agree with her decision at all. Kanos posted:I always thought the family conflict with Miho was one of the dumber points of the series. I understand the "victory at all costs" thing that the Nishizumi school has going, but in sport competition even that attitude should never extend to not helping competitors whose lives are in immediate danger. Given that senshado is a national sport managed by a regulatory agency, I really can't imagine it would be good PR for the Nishizumi school if they won a match by allowing several student athletes to drown or nearly drown without making an effort to assist them. Well, I disagree with Shiho's philosophy, but it's not wrong per se. Players play, competitors compete, the ref refs. Everyone focuses on their own job. People in RL have scored while other players have been down on the ground in pain or even really injured. The onus is on the referee to stop the match and rescue crew equivalents to save competitors. If someone were to be seriously injured in a match, it's the league and officials who would be blamed, not the high school competitors. Maybe the association passes more stringent regulations, prohibiting tanks from competing in a typhoon or heavy rainstorms. Play to the whistle. People stopping in matches voluntarily is nice but it's not expected. In fact, Katyusha wasn't punished for her actions in penning a tank who had basically stopped to go save another tank. She was promoted to commander. Its not like Shiho said to cheat or ignore the match officials. If they pause the match, then by all means, help out. Re: disinheritance - In the anime, it was said straight out that Shiho was only attending the Pravda match to tell Miho she's being disinherited. That's part of why Maho was seemingly uncharacteristically being very outspoken about how good of a commander she thinks Miho is. So... in a way, the anime is worse? Shiho isn't even giving Miho a chance to change Shiho's decision. Katreus fucked around with this message at 14:49 on Jun 8, 2016 |

Senshadou United Nations had a loving T28 and a Centurion (first postwar tanks we've seen in use except for the Type 10 which all that has done was back over a Priceless Italian supercar), I cant see this being beyond reason. I think the subs translate it as Selection University (or Selected University - something along those lines). But essentially, they're University tank teams that were selected by the Association to be on the selection team and presumably, the pro league and national teams are keeping an eye on them. University All-Star Team is a less literal but more evocative translation for them. ... Which means, yes, the HS All-Star Team beat the University All-Star Team.

Zettace posted:Third years like Maho are only a couple months from being in University so it's not that big of gap. This is especially true since it's not a "sport' where your physical size matters so you lose that advantage of being older. All the 3rd years have the 2nd half of the term left so they have another half-year or so before entering University. The Japanese school year starts in April and runs to around July 20th before there's a summer break. The second half of the year runs from early September to late December. Of note, Miho entered school in April. The nationals were held sometime in June and July. The movie / exhibition match against Selection University was held over the summer break. The issue between HS and University All-Stars - in addition to the equipment gap, which was quite obvious - is the experience gap. As Maho comments: If you're going, wait a moment, doesn't that mean...? Yes, Ooarai students are apparently insanely fast learners and aside from Miho, went through nationals on 2-3 months worth of experience with Senshado. Most of the HS students will only have around 5 months to 2.5 years of experience whereas the University side, aside from Alice, will have at least 3+ years. In addition, the Selection University team has actually played competitive matches together (see: Selection University beating an adult side) whereas the HS All-Stars basically got thrown together in 5 minutes. It's a wonder that they actually had some semblance of a plan. It basically relied on Miho being able to quickly juggle all different sorts of tanks at once (here, her experience with Ooarai's jumble probably helps) into workable plans and the various Captains and Ooarai team members improvising on the spot based on their understanding of Ooarai / Miho's style. Jintor posted:yeah, I'm slowing on buying physical stuff right now cos I'm moving soon, but once I'm settled I'm gonna go get Motto Motto whatever. IIRC, in addition to Motto Love Love, there's also the GUP manga (which, I think is it's own canon - it's noticeably a bit darker and some of the stuff has been retconned in the anime), Maginot, Ribbon Warrior, and Little Army 1 and 2. Maginot supposedly shows off the eponymous Maginot school (French tanks) and its new Captain, Eclair, and features a pre-tournament exhibition match. It's a little weird for me - I like the glimpse of the school and its team, but I didn't like the match or art. Some people are more incompetent than they should be and some people are more competent than they are portrayed in the next match. Just ... uneven. It's been retconned in at least one detail already (re: Momo). Ribbon Warrior, I haven't read yet, but it features a new protagonist and tankathlon, which is like unsanctioned tank battles (tanks must be 10 lbs or less?) between individual tanks. Little Army 1 is the prequel. Little Army 2 is set in some indeterminate time after the tournament and features a character from LA1. Re: Erika As far as I know, that's only manga or LN canon BTW, which does not necessarily correspond to anime canon. IIRC, Erika is bitchy because Miho left KMM to apparently join a different team, leaving KMM in the lurch and leaving the team, including Erika, feel abandoned, and Erika has to somehow make up for Miho's unique skillset but is crucially aware that she's not as good as Miho at doing so. Miho had a really good skill set and synergy with Maho that made up for KMM's doctrinal weakness: their formational discipline meant commanders were not as independent or adaptable. As Vice Commander, Miho was the one to communicate to individual tanks to carry out Maho's strategy - note that this was apparently known enough that Darjeeling's strategy against KMM in the semifinals revolved around trying to take advantage of KMM missing their top communicator and Darjeeling actually succeeded in getting to a 1v1 against Maho due to the confusion - and she seemingly was someone that KMM members liked. KMM morale crashed after Miho fled, and Maho had to spend time building it back up on her own. Also, hah, Miho is pretty pragmatic: this doctrinal weakness is what Miho takes advantage of in the final. It's also why KMM is seemingly unable to handle surprises and unexpected events during the battle. You can see Erika's weakness in command in that battle: she's not on the same page with Maho several times, she can't follow along with Maho's strategy, and she didn't really communicate with the individual tanks to help coordinate. Granted, Miho has less tanks to keep track of, but Miho gives pretty specific orders to individual tanks even if she gives leeway to the individual tank commanders on execution, and people are mostly on the same page as to the overall strategy. Bakanogami posted:I can't find it right now, but the thing that made Erika's character click for me was some Japanese blog post where they go through every encounter between Erika and Miho in the series. Erika will come up and say something snide or insulting to Miho, and then Miho will flat out completely ignore her, not even acknowledge her presence, usually focusing on Maho instead. She does everything she can to get a rise out of Miho, but fails to even register on her radar. Haha. Yeah. Although, to be fair, Miho does this to everyone, not just Erika. I feel like Miho took "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything" way too seriously. If you go through the recap episodes, Miho is super polite about people's attempted strategies and avoids mentioning bad things about them. For example, for Saunders, she says that they're very skilled and in regards to Alicia, her comment is that Alicia is "one who really knows how important intel is." When Yukari comments on the whole radio tapping incident and Miho's "brilliant' strategy, Miho is silent and only speaks up again when they're discussing whether Rommel pulled off a similar tactic with trees in North Africa. And her comment on Katyusha is that she's a "forceful, unwavering captain." "Provoking us before the match was probably part of the plan as well. That's just how good Katyusha is." It's not like Miho doesn't notice the comments though, I think. Erika is just usually with Maho so Miho is understandably a bit more focused on her beloved big sister's reaction than Erika.
