What is it?

Vagante is an action platformer, the first commercial offering from Seattle, Washington based Nuke Nine. The game is available on PC, Mac, and Linux. As a game with heavy roguelike elements, Vagante distinguishes itself from the field thanks to the built from scratch engine capable of online multiplayer, something this genre`s avid player base knows these games tend to sorely lack. Vagante has robust co-op and online multiplayer for up to four people and the games are an absolute blast! The game is, however, still early access. Nuke Nine pushes out major patches every two weeks and updates with daily bug fixes when needed.

Try the free demo! Based on build 41, you can play three of the four characters: Knight, Rogue, and Mage. The Wildling class and unlockable backgrounds are not available in this demo build, but you can play through entire first act.

The Cave Dragon can slam the ground with a fiery attack, hurting and stunning those too foolish or slow to get off the ground near the impact

Features
  • Honest combat: Monster attacks and patterns are easily understood, meaning there are no unfair deaths. I think this is perhaps the best comparison the game has to Spelunky - the player can always trace the steps that led to death or significant injury. Owning a comparatively smaller frame of combat compared to Spelunky (you will not, for example, die from an alien spaceship launched towards you from a completely off screen set of actions), Vagante boasts some of the best platform based combat the roguelite genre offers. Spelunky is primarily environmental platforming gameplay with combat elements; Vagante is focused on combat with platforming elements.

  • Fair balance: As the game progresses, the player is practically forced to become more stronger with an item pool that is diverse, powerful, and most importantly, plentiful. As difficulty ramps up with each act, the affinities and equipment collected along with skill in combat will guide you to victory or death. Because some numbers in Vagante like spell levels and some non-basic stats like Stability, Speed, Constitution, and the four resistances (Fire, Ice, Lightning and Poison) remain small throughout the game, each point - positive or negative - has a big impact.

  • Fully designed and defined classes and items: all four characters have distinct play styles with unique affinities (what could be called skills in a game like Diablo) and the equipment to support it. No classes feel like they lack the drops that would turn the game into a scarcity simulator.

There must be something that can be done with this chicken.

  • Unique gameworld: Strewn with religious altars, powerful bosses, unforgiving shopkeepers, and countless chests, Vagante maps are never skimpy on features that help the player become more powerful. Appropriately, the game becomes much more difficult with each new act. There are currently four acts, each with three levels, and twelve unique bosses.

  • Deities and sacrifices: Six deities are offered for interaction via the many shrines present in every game. A majority of the shrines each accept a unique and tightly defined selection of loot in the form of sacrifice, and since shopkeepers are not interested in buying anything you have, this is the only way to benefit from unwanted loot. Some shrines offer very straightforward rewards. One is bloodthirsty, and can reward as many of the precious select few stat points affordable to the player with HP regeneration. One will heal the player when they interact with the shrine and have the required 20 gold donation. Clever players have used the portal spell to move those two altars close together, allowing a wealthy player to stack stats like Defense, Dexterity, and Strength. All items interact with The Deranged shrine and, accordingly, rewards span almost the entire item pool. However, rewards can also include suffering a strong knockback effect, suddenly being set on fire, even random teleportation. All of these effects can quickly end a run so any player willing to take a chance sacrificing items to that deity has to be ready to get out of a bad situation. A highly chaotic weapon, unique to this deity and drop method, can be obtained with just the right item donations...

  • Meaningful loot: Pretty much every equippable item in the game aside from starting gear is enchanted with stats and every piece has unique sets of powers. Boots can offer Levitation to avoid falling spike damage and Light Feet to bypass ground-triggered traps like falling boulders and maneating Lurkers. Items may also be cursed, and the many deity altars together interact with almost (??unsure - are there any items that are not accepted by the deranged??) every item in the game. Cursed items with powers are harmful to the player instead of beneficial to varying degrees. Double Jump boots, when cursed, are labeled Double Jump? Every powerful ability on an item has an opposing cursed value to it. Remove curse scrolls allow cursed items to be taken off and replaces the cursed item effect with the pure powerful effect. With 25 inventory slots total and over a dozen drops every level, the player is given enough items to play around with to compliment any affinity build. Items drop all over the map, and those that are not beneficial for the player`s build have value with Gods of sacrifice, each with different tastes and, shall we say, rewards.

There must be some way to get inside here.

  • Meaningful statistics: Leveling up gives points that can be spent on affinities that give particular skills unique to each class or the one of five basic statistics, fallout style. Stats start quite low for every new character, and a player can immediately notice the impact of finding a better sword with +3 strength as a knight or the increased crit frequency a +3 luck magic ring one background class starts the game with. The five basic stats - Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Intelligence, and Luck - also have unique powers at affinity levels 3 and 5. Level 3 Luck gives all chests a chance to drop an extra item, level 5 Vitality gives the player +1 damage for every 20% HP missing from the pool, and level 5 Intelligence gives a massive boost to the player spell charge limit. Elemental resistance stats

  • Magic without mana: Every spell aside from the two starter mage spells (which other classes can also obtain, along with every other spell book, in many ways: a random drop, purchase from a shop, taken from a book shrine, gift from a god) has a limit on how many times it can be cast based on an assigned minimum casting value, the spell level, certain stats, and certain affinities. Reading a book of a spell already memorized increases the spell level, and a certain background always starts newly learned spells at level 2.

  • Local and online multiplayer: One of the greatest features! Vagante has playable online multiplayer, a rare game mode for this genre. Supporting up to four players, Vagante multiplayer is what you`ve been waiting for your whole life.

You`ve gone and died now. Not to worry, you came back as a skeleton, and your partner will have to sacrifice HP at the next between-levels campfire to resurrect your dumb dead rear end.

Classes

Vagante has four playable classes, each with four unique graphic sets: Mage, Rogue, Knight, and Wildling. The first three are available as a brand new player and the Wildling class is a simple unlock. Every class offers a vastly different early game experience. Hybridizing is very simple when desired, and players will often find themselves with loot to compliment any build.

:drugnerd: Mage :drugnerd:

Entering unexplored territory during combat will often multiply the number of foes pursuing you. This can be especially dangerous for the fragile, low HP Mage.

Normally starts out with a broken wand that serves as a melee weapon and offers +1 Intelligence. Always begins with Frost Nova and Eleclance memorized. Frost Nova is a powerful control spell that can swill wreck shopkeepers the entire game. Eleclance is a short beam attack that increases in range with higher spell levels. High intelligence means they can cast more of any spell than an equally leveled and equipped player class of any other kind. The spellcaster affinities are highly valuable and increase the safety of the mage by reducing the time spent standing still. Mages are stereotypically low on HP. Since Vagante does not use mana, spells have hard limits on how many times they can be cast, resetting when the next level is reached. High intelligence and the intelligence affinity levels 3 and 5 (available to all classes) substantially increases the casting limit for all spells.

:ese: Rogue :ese:

Two types magical Bow/Crossbow powers, the Homing Arrows and Weightless Arrows modifiers, increase the range the player can attack . The rogue`s bow affinities can further increase the deadliness of ranged attacks.

Stealth is done properly in Vagante and the rogue has plenty of affinities to benefit the playstyle. Rogues are also given the ranged weaponry affinity tree. While there are no shortage of powerful items to speak of in this game, two stand out to me big time: Homing Arrows and Weightless Arrows. These are not actual arrows, but the names of the powerful enchantment on these bows and crossbows. Homing arrows have a minimum required distance to a given enemy for the arrow to start homing and they always hits something when they`re tracking a target. Weightless arrows have always been able to travel a very long distance and are safe ways to deal with enemies in hallways like the entirety of Act 3. Bow affinities that allows arrow piercing simply multiplies that ranged effectiveness. In wide open areas, homing arrows can pierce and hit the same target three times by spinning around 360 degrees after each impact. When playing a rogue, I will generally put a point into affinity immediately, then wait until forest to put in any other points. If I find one of these two ranged weapon types in Caves, I don`t want to have already sunk points outside of the ranged tree, and I find myself comfortable enough clearing act 1 with just one point in stealth. Thrown daggers is a safe build to rely on when conserving arrows or as a primary ranged ability. Shadow clone is a very powerful affinity. Because the Rogue attacks so fast to start with, luck becomes highly noticeable as the critical strikes pour in. If a rogue is deep into new game plus, with level 4 acrobatics (33% chance to evade physical attacks), they can branch into level 5 luck for a chance to evade magical damage too.

:hist101: Knight :hist101:

Defensive affinities give the knight huge advantages later in the game.

This knight is the original Vagante character. The affinities have changed quite a bit from the beginning and the class as it stands today is perhaps the most highly refined of the four. Going straight for the level 5 Sword affinity (huge swingspeed increase with no downside) is perhaps still the best choice, since this leaves open the ability to get the level 4 Holy affinity (invulnerability shield) that can be used three times per level. Those two affinities alone can wreck any trouble spot in the game.

:ssj: Wildling :ssj:

Lion`s Roar will damage and knockback enemies, allowing for a safe escape when enemies are attacking from multiple directions.

Formerly known as a mysterious woman and once referred to simply as three question marks, the Wildling engages in intimate close combat and relies on major speed and instinctual animal anger to kill an enemy before it has a chance to attack. Many Wildling abilities like the Bear Stomp never fail to feel powerful and fun. A broad stat sheet begs hybridization out of necessity because not every enemy is safe to punch - Act 2 Golems do fatal damage when they fall on players. Certain bosses likewise need to be avoided in prolonged close combat. In this way a Wildling always needs backup plans to knock out bosses to level up and get more quality items (Boss chest items cannot be cursed!) instead of merely surviving to the next act.

Backgrounds

A background is selected at the beginning of the game along with class. For the most part, all backgrounds are usable by all classes. The few exceptions are class specific backgrounds, of which there are only 4. Almost all of the backgrounds are beneficial, and some are extremely challenging. One unlockable background is a huge multiplier for the player`s damage, but HP is permanently fixed at 1. You can play deprived. One of my favorites, Wanted, makes all shopkeepers hostile but you start with a ring that gives +3 luck and has a power that causes gold to come to me. Like Spelunky, shopkeepers have a powerful attack but can be eliminated with some luring over traps and many other safe disposal methods. With the gold saved that would have otherwise paid the shopkeepers for loot, I can make lots of HP sacrifices at The Bloody shrine and donate to The Light shrine to heal back up. Another background, Synchronized, has the game set at pause by default, and moves only when the player moves, always pausing the game when a movement related action is not being performed. I find this background incredibly difficult to play. Other backgrounds can reduce shopkeeper prices, make poison potions give HP, cause hundreds of wisps flood every level, render gold useless (it used to cause damage!) in exchange for better starting stats, and double the spell level when a book is read for the first time.

This game is great. If I hadn't already bought it, I'd be all over the contest. Using the downward stab attack with the knight is pretty darn helpful. Also, abusing the stealth ability with the thief is fun and profitable.

Pretty neat game. Here are some notes I took while playing - you've probably already thought of all this stuff before but it might be useful feedback:

- I assume it's simply not done yet, but if there was supposed to be any sound, there wasn't.
- I tested out how the game runs on a low end machine and it's... rough. The game runs well enough most of the time but it hangs for a good 10-15 seconds when entering and exiting the tutorial and nearly a full minute when you die. I expect it's a CPU bottleneck. The machine in question
- Movement controls feel very good, though the sword in particular does not have a very good feel on its attack animation. Might just need another 1-2 animation frames added to the windup so it looks more like a windup.
- An option for UI scaling would be nice, I definitely wanted it to be bigger than it was by default
- Would be good to be able to bind menu controls separately from movement controls; mouse control for the in-game menu would also be nice; would personally like the inventory/level up/etc screens to be much bigger and show more information at a time, it doesn't need to be THAT small - maybe make it an option (small vs detailed UI) in the menu?
- Really happy about the proper roguelike random potions, scrolls and cursed items.
- Really happy about this cape I got from a mimic that gave me the goddamned Space Jump from Metroid
- I'm really not a fan of damage spread. The game employs randomness in so many interesting ways that "sometimes you do more or less damage and it's completely out of your control" doesn't feel like it adds anything, especially when the range is wide like 1-7.

Good luck with the game!

Sent you a friend invite on steam. I haven`t played the demo, but it is from a recent build (41a was four+ weeks ago) and the commercial release has had full sound for as long as I`ve played, back to beta 4 I think. Yes, items are particularly well done in Vagante, and there are very few `plain` items aside from starting gear. There are many armour types with powers that wildly change how you play the game. There are boots that increase player movement by like 400%, gloves that improve archery, helmets that freeze enemies or set them aflame when close.

I have to go out in a minute. Lovely game for the 10 minutes I got to play, but then I got stun-locked by 4 of the bandit enemies near what I assume was the end of the first level.

Pretty good so far! I had this game in my wishlist for a while. I would suggest making the right arrow at the beginning leads to the turtorial a little more obvious along with stressing how important picking perks are.

Nice touch on making the Knight with Sword skill play like Link from Legend of Zelda 2.

Oh, are you not part of the dev team? I guess I just sort of assumed you were and were looking for feedback, haha. You never actually said you were so it that was kind of silly of me. Might post the feedback on their forums then.

EDIT: Oh, and I started up the full game and it has neither the performance issues nor the lack of sound, so those were problems with the earlier build or just the demo, apparently.

EDIT 2: Tried the demo again, now it runs fine. I wonder what happened the first time. I didn't have a thousand other things open or anything.

I beat the Bandit boss on my first attempt, but I wanted to get to the end of the demo instead to get a better feel for how the game is. A couple observations/gripes (that I'll head over and post on the official forums as well):

-I was annoyed that I was not able to jump after starting an attack on the ground, but I could start an attack mid-air. I'm not sure if that's a design choice, but it made dealing with bats and other flying enemies a bit harder than I felt it should have been.
-I was also annoyed that the sword pogo required you to keep mashing the attack button to re-enable it each time, but I can definitely see that being an intended design choice (over just letting you hold down to keep the sword out) as it would otherwise trivialize a lot of enemies, even with the attack strength losing power after each pogo.
-Health seems very scarce (only 10 HP at a bonfire between levels is guaranteed it seems). It took finding a couple hidden wall porkchops to be able to get enough health to make it through (as well as just dodging the worm and dragon bosses for the door out), but maybe that's just because I'm bad?
-I found a fairy in a cage and freed it, but I'm not sure what it actually does??? I couldn't interact with it at all after freeing it, other than attacking it again (then it ran off and I just continued on with the rest of the level).
-Instant death spike traps were a lot more frustrating than Spelunky (as a comparison), probably because I could take more hits overall than in Spelunky.
-I had to turn off fullscreen in order to get a picture that wasn't just a black screen. Is there a screenshot button in the game itself that bypasses this? :(

Despite the above, I still enjoyed playing the game! It felt very rewarding when I finally completed the demo.

You can heal from:

Potions of regeneration
Wands of healing
Campfires (try cooking. try throwing things into the fire. whats the worst that could happen?)
The Light shrine
`Coins have a chance to heal` chest armour power
Lifesteal weapons
Evil Transformation spell
I think even chaos wands still heal, and will heal more frequently alongside other good effects with high luck.
There is also a background that makes poison potions heal the player and one that increases healing from campfires.
