Preorders for the 35th handheld game n watch are up. There seems to be plenty for everyone so no rush. Probably will end up being like Mario where the stores will have tons, but who knows.

Edit: happy page 1,000 snipe!

I didn't like Skyward Sword because of those horrible stealth sections. Every other annoyance I could accept, but those stealth sections with gather x number of orbs without being seen stages made it the one Zelda I never bothered to replay. silent realm or whatever it was called. And obviously you had four of those stages.

The second time you have to do it I stopped playing forever and it remains my only unbeaten Zelda.

Just comparing them to the stealth sections in WW or TP even reveals how lovely they are. The HERO OF LIGHT should not be sneaking around and hiding behind trees from ROBOT GHOSTS that is insanely dumb!!!

I didn't dislike the stealth bits in SS because they were so fast-paced. Running around and figuring out speedrunning routes on the fly was fun.

It was very different than actual bad stealth sections like the fortress in WW or the Yiga hideout & Korok stealth trial in BOTW.

Medals only weigh one down.

the korok stealth trial was awful because it was blended with the actual worst video game mechanic, "follow an NPC that moves slower than a run bur faster than a walk."

I appreciated the lore implications of the Silent Realms as they were sort of the precursor to the Twilight Realm and the tears of light that show up in Twilight Princess. But playing them sucked rear end. I don’t think they were worse than the fortress in WW which was mercifully short but they were definitely comparable to the stealth Korok bullshit in BOTW.

Skyward Sword has some really great ideas and dungeons but also has some really awful poo poo like the Imprisoned and the empty sky. I like the idea that the main realms were designed to be dungeon-like but I think it was poorly executed since it just ended up making the world feel small. That was also because of hardware limitations. Hard mode sucked because getting frustrated made it harder to execute the motion controls lol button controls are gonna be a huge improvement, probably.

I just bought the AoC DLC. Looking forward to playing that on my vacation next month. :)

If we’re doing time travel, let’s have that serve as the blood moon mechanic and reset the world. Maybe you get 3-5 days of time travel before you’re forced back to the other world and everything resets. Adds some tension like Majoras Mask.

Hell yeah. Even better you can only take whatever armor/outfit you’re wearing back in time and everything else has to be stored in the present day. Would add some strategy and planning for every time you want to take a trip to the past.

the silent realms were actually really cool and one of the more well-realized concepts in the game tbqh. they're not even really stealth segments. the atmosphere of them was also really cool, especially the silent hill music that would play when you were being chased.

now the ACTUAL stealth segment where you lose your sword in the volcano, that was some annoying nonsense

Silent Realms bothered me because they were all exactly the same. First time I get it, it's the Courage test so it's this stealth section with some really terrifying enemies that can one-shot you. Then the test of Power and Wisdom is just the same thing in a different setting, and has nothing to do with those two attributes.

So based on the tiny snippets of footage on the ground has anyone been able to work out if the landscape is actually exactly the same? The only bit I recognized was ludfo's bog but that was too distant to tell much from.

It's also sort of funny that after two years of speculation about how they'll add huge underground areas they're adding huge sky areas instead.

You realize the Sand Rod isn't available to rent at the start of the game, right? The Sand Rod is taken by one of the sages and you can't even rent it until you've been to Lorule and saved him. Even if you have everything rented by the time Ravio starts selling items, you'd still have to go back for the Sand Rod and you'd find out about being able to purchase items. It's impossible to finish the game without finding out that Ravio lets you buy things rather than just renting them. And that's not even taking into account the Mother Maimai straight up says "I can only power up items you completely own" is a big hint to the player that you can do more than rent stuff.

Buying items isn't that big of a money sink. I guess if you ignore chests and don't explore the overworld and just shoot straight for every dungeon and ignore anything in them that isn't a key to progress then rupees might have value but the game throws so many at you if you just take time and explore that you can have everything incredibly early on and rupees become valueless again.
well i sort of assumed you somehow didn't realise this because *buying* all the items before the master sword sounds impossible

There’s truly no wrong way or order to approach the game. But if you want some good solid newbie advice, here’s the typical thread recommendation:

1. When you leave the great plateau, follow the story prompts and quest to get to Kakariko village first and do the story thing there.
2. Follow the story prompts to head to Hateno village next (far right side of map) and complete your sheika slate.
3. At this point you can go anywhere but here’s a recommended order to tackle the Divine Beasts in order of difficulty and reward:

1. Rito - Head to the far middle west of the map and look for the giant bird mech flying in the sky, that’s the right location. (If you hit the desert, your too far south, snow means your too far north.). The reward from this helps you climb easier which is fantastic in the early game.

2. Zora - Far East but north of Kakariko. Zora people in the marshy area will direct you to a bridge where Prince Sidon will guide you.

3. Death Mountain - Should be obvious as hell how to find this place, head for the volcano. You need to learn how to craft “fireproof elixirs” to get up the mountain but eventually get gear to mitigate that.

4. Gerudo Desert - lower left of the map. If you can’t figure out how to get into Gerudo town, just google the answer. The story does a good job of giving you clues but some people still can’t figure it out.

After that you absolutely want to jump right into the Champion’s Balad DLC. It’s hard and challenging but fair. The reward is a goddamn motorcycle which is loving amazing and holy poo poo it better return for BOTW 2 goddammit!!!!”

I just checked a description and you’re right, it’s kind of like a stealth segment but not exactly. There is a safe zone (possibly more than one?) and when you’re outside of it monsters chase you unless you grab a tear of light, which makes you safe for 90 seconds. It’s more about collecting them quickly enough that you can stay safe, which requires route planning I guess. But I think if you’re caught you have to start over. It was mostly just annoying!

Routing and I guess a form of resource management since you can leave them until you need one. It's like if you beeline to the 4 power pellets first in PacMan the rest of the level is going to be harder but you don't have to do that

romanowski

the spirit realms on their own are fine I think, the real problem is that you're forced to do them four(!) different times in order to progress the story, so it quickly starts to feel like useless padding (like pretty much everything else in the game). if they had been optional side quests (after the first one at least) I think people would look at them more fondly because they do have a pretty cool atmosphere. actually most of the between dungeon stuff in SS would work better as optional sidequests

Amppelix
Aug 6, 2010

yeah they're not about stealth but about navigating the environments efficiently and skilfully. sometimes you have to wait a sec for one of those lantern ghosts to pass by. i think that's a pretty fun challenge and an actually good reuse of the same environment since the fact that you've already explored the area fully means that you can actually somewhat plan a route in advance instead of stumbling around like an idiot. plus they're over in a couple minutes.

if you want to see bad reuse of an environment, just check all the eldin volcano segments lol. first an escort quest and then an actually long and actually dreadfully boring stealth section? boy, don't mind if i do!

I like how Skyward Sword has a robot pirate in on a pirate ship in the robot land. Then a second robot pirate because goddamnit we need more robot pirates.

I saw tons of toys of the first robot pirate well before playing the game, which had made me assume he was a significant character. It was amusing when he turned out to just be a random, unremarked miniboss.
