Capitals fans are adamant that Vegas is going to select Brooks Orpik instead of like Dmitry Orlov or Marcus Johansson because of leadership and grit. I want to believe.

Everyone but Vancouver is on the up and up in the Pacific. McDavid will be 20 in 2017-18 so the Oilers should really have their poo poo together by then. Gaudreau and the Flames should at worst be playoff also rans. The Coyotes don't have much high level talent, but are getting a lot better. . San Jose and LA should still have the remnants of their cup run teams to drag them into the playoffs. Vegas would be hard pressed to do anything of note with a team of castoffs and a solitary high draft pick.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...edators_seasons Predators didn't have a winning season for the first six years, they've basically been good ever since though.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...ta_Wild_seasons Hey the Wild had only four losing seasons out of 16, two of those being the first two years. That probably had a lot to do with having the right people in place because the state breathes hockey.

Stop crying about the fact that people are skeptical. A lot of us want to see them succeed and hope they do, but it's critical they get on the path to having a good roster soon if they're going to maintain attendance. Attendance issues lead to relocation. Not sure why you're taking issue with that.

It comes up because if the Wild lost every game for fifty years in a row they'd still have full arenas. For Vegas, the team has to succeed, they don't get to just print money because they exist.

Vegas will be the first expansion since the salary cap and loser point, I wouldn't be surprised if that helped them be less-terrible in the standings than past expansion teams.

What attitude problem?

Another thing to consider when comparing this team to other expansions is the difference in draft rules. In the last three drafts you got to protect one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards. You were basically limited to the fourth line, a bottom pairing defense, and a back up goalie to put your whole team together. Now it's seven forwards, three defencemen, and one goaltender or one goaltender and any eight skaters. And as Zodijackylite said, teams aren't just two lines, a checking line, and goons. They won't be amazing, but Vegas will likely be able to put together a team with at least some skill and not just over the hill guys or people who wouldn't make the league without the new team.

I couldn't find anything online, but did the names of unprotected players in the last draft ever get released, or just who was claimed?

You can find the protected lists from the 98, 99, and 00 expansion drafts here:
http://historicalhockey.blogspot.ca...sion-draft.html
http://historicalhockey.blogspot.ca...sion-draft.html
http://historicalhockey.blogspot.co...sion-draft.html

To give an idea of the complete lack of talent available, here's a recap of what the Rangers did:

1998: "Lost" UFA goalie Mike Richter, who they resigned. Nashville got a compensation pick. They protected AHL goalie Rob Stauber, whose last NHL game was in 1994-95, as well as enforcers Darren Langdon and Eric Cairns and AHL defenseman Maxim Galanov.

1999: Lost defenseman Chris Tamer, who played five years for Atlanta. Protected part-time AHL/NHL heavyweight brawlers Jason Doig and Rumun Ndur as well as punchman Darren Langdon. Exempt from exposing a goalie.

2000: "Lost" UFA defenseman Matheiu Schneider (who signed elsewhere) and Dmitri Subbotin, a Russian who never came to North America. Protected Jason Doig again, as well as AHL enforcer Dale Purinton, whose resume included one NHL game and 415 PIM in the AHL that year.

The drafting teams got some sort of compensation pick from the league for the UFAs. Protecting 15 players and rookie/sophomore pros, plus having UFAs available meant there was literally zero talent draftable. Teams were literally protecting part-time AHLers, journeymen, and multiple goons. This time around is much better.

Foley has already confirmed black/silver/gold.

Other developments:
- The AHL will give Foley a token look-over but admitted that if you're approved by the NHL then AHL approval is practically a given.

- Foley doesn't know where to put the AHL team, but is looking at sites. He's not throwing out the idea of also hosting it in Vegas, somewhere in the burbs, and occasionally letting them play on the Strip against rivals/regional teams.

- A training rink is going through the civic bureaucracy. Their first choice in location is near Red Rock casino on the far west edge of civilization, but other options exist, such as the city-owned Cashman Center complex that has a rarely-used convention center and the worst baseball field in Triple-A.

- "We probably won't win the Stanley Cup in our first season, but we should be competitive because of the way the expansion rules have changed since the last teams."

Somewhere the other day someone said Salt Lake City was a potential site for their AHL team. They already have the Maverick center which is where the 2002 Olympics were held. Perfect size for AHL, since the Grizzlies were an AHL team at one point. It sounds like bad management sunk that ship though. Makes a lot of sense geographically.

Nah the expansion team will basically make some 3rd line guys a ton of money. Instead of fighting for minutes on a team with a real top 6 you get fed opportunities and minutes with a team that has no internal competition.

Kind of like how Palmieri went from the ducks, where he had trouble staying in the lineup, to the devils, where he was given as many PP minutes and opportunities as he could ever want.
