One of the things I like best about expansion is how it sometimes gives guys a new lease on life. Should be interesting who this applies to in this case.

I could definitely see Fleury in Vegas being like Puppa in Tampa or Beezer in Florida where he becomes a stabilizing force that allows the people building the team to focus elsewhere, so if a blue chip defenceman or forward comes along, you go for them. I mean, you should probably focus on those positions anyways, but removing the temptation isn't a terrible idea.

So all jokes about their owner being dumber than a sack of circus peanuts aside, what's the expectation for this team in term of being able to become a playoff squad, timewise? They have advantages not afforded to other expansion squads, and I could certainly see players wanting to play in Vegas, in terms of free agents in general (unless Foley turns out to be James Dolan-like in his ability to alienate athletes).

They're still not a great team but they have some exciting young players (Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly), a new goalie who started out the season looking really bad but has been pretty good lately and seems to be back on track (Frederik Andersen), and a braintrust in place that seems to preaching a patient, measured, analytic-friendly approach. They've also drafted well and used the high picks that came from their crappiness well, and jettisoned a lot of the bad contracts that were bogging them down like Dion Phaneuf and Dave Clarkson. It's absolutely a good time, there's even a non-zero chance they'll get the last playoff spot (I wouldn't bank on it though). The whole cult around that attitude of a "French Canadian team for French Canadians" baffles me. It's gonna be a LONG time before the Habs win a cup again. That attitude was fine when the rule about having first dibs on French players existed, not so much anymore. Imagine if Yankee fans demanded only people from NYC or NY state. The 90s would have been very different if that was the case.

I'm fine with Seattle but I wish he'd realize that teams in the southern U.S. draw poorly already. Tampa drew well this year but they couldn't get people to watch them to win the Cup without giving away a lot of tickets. The teams in the bottom 10 of attendance have 6 teams in the southern U.S., 2 Canadian teams (one of whom is playing very poorly), the Blue Jackets, and a couple teams in the NY/NJ area. I'm not saying this league needs to be EXCLUSIVELY CANADIAN or some nonsense, but maybe stop trying to appeal to areas that have a dozen sports franchises already. And in Kansas' case, they already lost a team and had the worst winning pct in modern NHL history (.241). Is anybody in KC REALLY clamoring for a KC team?

I thought I read that their arena made more money on concerts than they would with a full time tenant. I'd forgotten about the legendarily poo poo Caps team. Still, I feel like the best candidates for expansion are Hamilton, Seattle, Quebec City, Milwaukee (Wisconsin loving loves hockey, as much as Minnesota does I'd say), and this might seem odd, but Omaha. Population of close to 500,000, and their NCAA team is one of the best attended teams in the NCAA.

Maybe Thunder Bay could be their AHL team, lord knows our mayor has tried endlessly to get an AHL team here (we were sorta close to being the Jets farm club a couple years back). It'd actually be pretty cool, but the plan was to build an 180 million dollar arena, even after both the federal and provincial gov't told us to gently caress off when we asked for help. I've read that Vegas is a city of transients, not unlike LA. Is that true? Because if so, it could help. I remember reading that one of the reasons LA typically gets considered for franchises despite losing teams often (in the NFL, anyways) is they figure with people moving there often for work purposes there'll be enough of any type of fan that just about any type of team can work there. Of course, LA has a ton of population thanks to suburbs (something like 18 million CSA, Vegas has 2 million). I want this team to work out, if just because expansion is always interesting.

I also suspect he'd rather not have another Canadian team. Most likely expansion attempts involve U.S. cities, unless one counts Hamilton, which I don't because too many things would have to happen for that actually be a thing. I mean really, there aren't many more Canadian cities (maybe like 3-4) that could support an NHL team right now anyways. Halifax could do it based on the fact the Mooseheads are the only sports team they really have outside of Canadian university teams, but the time zone and travel factors could really hurt them when it comes to consideration. I'd be genuinely shocked if Saskatoon got a team. I know the Blues nearly ended up there, but if any Saskatchewan city gets a team I'd think it'll be Regina, even though it has less people, just because I think they get more money from the province due to the whole "provincial capital" thing. Plus you have Moose Jaw being close by, and that's another 34,000 people which nearly makes up the difference in population. I'd actually love it if there was a big Canadian expansion where one year it was Halifax and Regina/'Toon, and the next year, Quebec and Victoria. Or even Quebec and Seattle, that way you have an even 10 Canadian teams, plus a team that BC and Alberta residents can get to fairly easily.

It only has around 300 000 people but people will drive there for the casino so I bet they'll do the same for an NHL game. Funnily enough, Halifax would be more likely to get a team if Quebec did first I think. Because then you can have a division of Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, Quebec, and Halifax. Travel would be fairly simple in that division! Sadly though, I think something would have to drastically change for Canada to get more teams. At the very least, that will be true as long as Gary Bettman's running the show. El Gallinero Gros fucked around with this message at 19:46 on Jun 8, 2017 |
