Local news people built up the press conference by saying by Black Knights over and over again and trying to make it seem less awkward. Then Foley got to the podium and deliberately said "[we] have no name yet."

ABC affiliate just now says Foley will submit a list of names to the BoG and they'll select some. He wants to sell jerseys by the start of the coming season.

Foley has already confirmed black/silver/gold.

Other developments:
- The AHL will give Foley a token look-over but admitted that if you're approved by the NHL then AHL approval is practically a given.

- Foley doesn't know where to put the AHL team, but is looking at sites. He's not throwing out the idea of also hosting it in Vegas, somewhere in the burbs, and occasionally letting them play on the Strip against rivals/regional teams.

- A training rink is going through the civic bureaucracy. Their first choice in location is near Red Rock casino on the far west edge of civilization, but other options exist, such as the city-owned Cashman Center complex that has a rarely-used convention center and the worst baseball field in Triple-A.

- "We probably won't win the Stanley Cup in our first season, but we should be competitive because of the way the expansion rules have changed since the last teams."

Hi, SinBin! I assume you have an account and are reading this!

Your blog sucks and your transparent attempt to get work as the expansion team's eventual SBN blog will fail. I mean really you sound like a goddamn Trump groupie with some of your posts. Why don't you just call Bill Foley "Daddy" already and get it over with?

It's incredibly dumb.

Nah, our local media is garbage but they're not that garbage. It's just this doofus pretending to be the worst SBN blogger since RevHalofan.

Silver something is probably best since it's the Silver State. Even though our silver industry's best cultural export was the NWA/WCW Heavyweight Title belt.

I just don't know why you're calling your team Knights when there's a bigger city with a team called Kings nearby. Is our hockey identity really Los Angeles's lovely less important buddy? We get enough of that in our real lives.

I've been dreaming of a hockey team here since 2007. I remember looking at all the non-stop flights we had with big NHL cities, and how many Canadian tourists I've befriended here, and wondered why we were courting the NBA with that All-Star Game at the Thomas & Mack that year in a desperate bid for David Stern's recognition, and totally ignoring the NHL. I've put up with jokes, I've put up with angry Canadians who think the NHL is their God-given right and that every city that doesn't get annual snowfall should go screw. I've watched them bitch that they should have more teams, and then they got the Jets and bitched some more.

And I still think this team is going to be a mess in it's first couple seasons. THE CREATOR appears to be too busy being a visible fanboy for various things to wear his serious owner shoes (like he's such a fanboy for a non-hockey team that he kept pushing to name the team after them), and I've actually met Maloofs and know what they're like. And don't tell me "well they own like 20% that's it" because they've owned 2% of the Palms for the past five years, and even with only 2% they managed to not only keep their position of running the property, but they managed to sink it even further irrelevancy to the point that the guys who actually owned it have sold it pending state approvals for 25% less than they paid in the bad old days of 2010 when Vegas was an economic disaster zone.

I will be there for the first Sharks game with my teal on, but I think it'll be a rough start even if it's ultimately successful.

All that babbling about the locker room, it looks like a typical unfurnished MGM Resorts International(TM) space. Like there's oddly neglected corners of their hotels that look just like that.

A lot of it is going to be that the company that owns the building sees the team as just another tenant, the building was not built with the idea that it needed this team to justify itself like a lot of venues.

Foley mentioned Nighthawks, Desert Hawks and Sidewinders as a few of his runners-up. He could never shake a desire to incorporate Knights, however, in an ode to his West Point alma mater.

I'm sure that will resonate with this guy...

quote:

I liked the Knight but I thought it might have been better if they would have done something other than Knight because of the whole L.A. Kings thing, said David Thummel, a 27-year-old local planning to purchase a hoodie.

Nighthawks would have been a much better name if they could have come up with a bird mascot like the baseball teams do. You could even have a poster with a bunch of hockey players in the diner/bar of the Nighthawks oil painting, which is just old fashioned fun.

It is kind of telling/embarassing how The Creator's boner for the Army is present in every single viable name, though.

Bonus if it's 'Black Knights'.

Supposedly the AHL team will play in a building being constructed near a mall on the west side of town (never mind, that's a practice rink). We're really used to goofy nonsense as a minor league hockey town (the Wranglers used to do midnight games and themed costume games etc) so I would really love "Industry Knights" as a team name. It's both a play on a commonly used term locally, and also just quietly ribs the NHL team name. (Edit: Works well for Reno, too!)

They've said they're looking into the same Fox Sports West channels that carry Ducks/Kings for their TV broadcasts. That might sound weird, but Vegas is a tiny media market by way of isolation that can't support it's own RSN. Cox locally offers these Los Angeles based RSNs, but also exempts them from their skinny no-sports packages so any residents who don't care can opt to never see games.

What Vegas cable doesn't offer, as the asking price is so high that Cox refuses to inflict it upon customers, is SportsNet LA, the LA Dodgers channel. As that channel is about the Dodgers 24/7/365 even during the MLB offseason, one has to wonder if Charter and the Dodgers have considered ceding a few hours here and there to the Knights in order to push Cox LV into picking it up and adding another cable system in a 2M population area to shove dollar bills into their filthy mouths.

I think the raiders are going to be a red herring for when the knights suck and tickets naturally decline.

I don't know if the tickets are going to decline and the thing is going to be a huge fuckup, but if it does, the Raiders actually will probably play a role because the media here is just fuckin' hyped as hell for the Raiders. There seemed to be very little taxpayer revolt to the politicians making such an expensive pork barrel project without any input from residents or a public referendum. But the alt-weekly was people in silver facepaint on the cover last week, tonight's leading news story was the excitement/disappointment of the Raiders draft pick, and the classic rock and Motown station every few songs has a drop of a voice saying "The Las Vegas Raiders, I like the sound of that!"

I think that the hockey team will actually be on the Strip in a casino-owned arena gives it an edge in terms of "casinos buy seats and give them away". I'm sure casinos will buy a bunch of Raiders tickets too, but it'll probably be a harder get. MGM is probably looking at this as an alternative to showroom entertainment because they have drained the Cirque Du Soleil well bone dry with their rapid expansion in the late 2000s.

There's a large Kings fanbase visiting as well as significant fans locally for the Hawks, Sharks, and Wings. I doubt Vegas vs Columbus will sell out, but Vegas vs Big_City_Here should do alright.

Then it'll be a failure from the get-go, the business plan is for every game to feel like an away game in [Your Town Here].

People who live here don't make enough money to support pro sports. Education metrics are very low, advanced job prospects are low because good jobs follow good schools. The largest two industries expected to continue growth are the service industry and nursing care.

Could you perhaps say that Vegas is the next Detroit?

No, because Vegas is better racially integrated and has been proactive in gentrifying it's downtown before the rot expanded.

Also a lot of wealthy and well to do people live in the metro a pro sports team considers "Detroit", they just moved away to suburbs and exurbs in a massive act of white flight. There are no cities an hour out of the Vegas valley for people to move to. You're basically three hours of driving away from anywhere.

It's an exaggeration but it's not wild. Costs of living are low and salaries match that appropriately. I realize there's some guys making six figures promoting nightclubs, but they're the exemption and not the rule.

But I think the team will do fine given what we've seen in Phoenix.
