The website says there were 12 city killers altogether, and the first wave targets were: Washington, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Paris, Moscow, Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and New Delhi.
Which website are you looking at? Warof1996.com says there were 36 city destroyers, and they lit up 108 cities before being taken out.

once their shields were down they could just drop nukes on em

or hell maybe just throw rocks at important-looking bits until you break whatever part keeps the hojillion-ton manhole cover from following gravity. probably send someone else to do the rock throwing.

I figured that's exactly what happened each time - one pilot gave their life to take out each city killer to prematurely detonate their weapon.

But it was Russell's nuke that blew up the weapon, not his plane. He just couldn't fire the nuke because the clamp things were jammed.

Most other city destroyers, they could have fired a nuke up into the charging weapon.

I thought it was just a Sidewinder (or whatever) missile that got jammed, not a nuke. Doesn't he say "Fox two" a couple of times while trying to fire it, like other pilots earlier?

I'm pretty sure that wasn't a nuke on Russell's plane, it was just an air to air missile - the nuke was on Smith's and Goldblum's alien ship.

It looked like what Russell did was prematurely detonate the plasma charge to strike the city killer - if you pay attention, the alien weapon first fires a guidance beam, then the plasma charge rides the beam and detonates when it hits solid matter. What Russell did was fly into the guidance beam and set off the plasma charge prematurely, so close that the plasma charge detonated and destroyed the city killer.

That's what I assume too because as you can see at the start of this scene the explosion travels throughout the ship.

That's on the American public, not the military.

Also, JFK, while he obviously drank, was primarily a tweaker. Nixon was the one who'd get completely hammered and flirt with the idea of launching.

The scene immediately after where they make a point of showing them transmitting to the world how to take them down makes me imagine the combined military might of the world rolling their eyes..."Oh, shoot missiles at them. Why didn't we think of that"

Well the key part is "block the weapon just as its about to fire". Kamikaze plane or missile probably doesnt matter.

Assuming there are missiles left. That part of the movie always bugged me - these ships are the size of cities, and the humans were hoping to take them down with air to air missiles?

One lucky hit is all it takes (and one hit to the primary weapon ends up being the "lucky hit" that works).

The US pilots were kinda flying blind, but it's not like they had a choice. It was a last ditch effort to stop the city destroyer (that they largely knew nothing about) in the potentially small window when its shields were down, using whatever planes and pilots were still around.
It would be like if the Death Star attack in Star Wars had played out without the rebels having the Death Star plans. The Death Star is going to blow their planet up either way, so they might as well get in the air and hope they can find a weak point before everyone dies.

I could be wrong on this. But I think the Alternate Ending of that scene has Randy Quaid's character flying his cropduster with a nuke hastily strapped to the side of it. Or at least a version of those missile launchers with a radiological symbol to drive it home.

Maybe that's where it got mixed up?

Just saw this one. Dull and stupid with tepid action sequences and occasional bouts of outrageously poor editing. At the same point, the occasional funny quip from the actors (Goldblum, Spiner, Hirsch) helped the medicine go down. Not worth getting worked up about.

Does this movie take place over the course of a single day? Cause I didn't see anything that signalled there was a new day.

Even so, gotta admire the bravery of the AI orbship to come save humans a mere hour before the enemy arrives. Using their wormhole tech to come a bit earlier would've been a cowards way out.

Resurgence really sucked rear end. None of the intense build up of the last movie was present. Everything just kind of jumped from one point to another randomly with no flow. None of the action sequences made any sense and there was no character development. I've watched the first film every year for the last 20 years and that movie is so fun and good.

I said in another thread that I didn't think this was a good ID4 movie, but in some ways with a few tweaks it could have been the start of a Robotech/Macross live-action franchise and just written the film around than instead of ID4 continuity.

Yeah I just saw it and it's ridiculous junk. Everyone is where they are because of nepotism and the one guy who isn't is hated by his boss and somehow doesn't get drummed out when he just walks away from a superior officer in the canteen. Then Will Smith's son, who is the squadron leader, tells his squad to go on without him because he's gotta go see about his mum and everyone is apparently fine with him deserting. Also wasn't his mom a stripper in the first movie?

Anyway there's way too much comic relief and all of it sucks rear end.

I SAID WE'RE NOT GONNA BE FUCKING SUCK THIS YEAR!!!

This was a bad movie. But bad in a lightly entertaining way where you could laugh at every conceivable component of it because it's so badly done. I don't even want to get into the issues it has because it just the whole thing, but I was sort of amused for not paying to see it.

Jeff Goldblum and Brent Spiner are amazing treats tho. Completely hamming it up because its a bad movie, but a treat none the less.

The hospital she works at is named after the First Lady, so presumably the woman who tried to save her had the inside track on getting to work there as a doctor.

Nice catch.

Another thing I thought was weird was the size of the queen on the infrared scan. I figured they would have gone full Alien and have a massive egg sack attached to her that she would shed when the fighting happened, but she's literally just an oversized harvester right down to the armor design and tentacles. Missed opportunity.
