If you haven't read it already, this article is a great exploration of this:

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2017/07/dems-can-abandon-the-center-because-the-center-doesnt-exist.html

Basically extreme views are extremely common, moderate views are extremely rare, and people often hold some "extreme right" and some "extreme left" views simultaneously (for example, close the borders and kick out all immigrants, but also medicare for all and Green New Deal) because your opinion on one issue doesn't necessarily affect your opinion on another issue.

And that's why milquetoast centrists lose, because nobody actually holds moderate views on every issue, they hold ideologically contradictory extreme views on all kinds of different issues. So centrists end up alienating everyone and winning over no one because instead of appealing to extreme views on good issues and trying to win people over to good views on other issues, they scold you for believing in extremes in the first place and offer moderate solutions that no one actually believes in.

also, people generally don’t “have” positions on most things. they just sort of make them up on the spot when asked a question or presented with a choice. it’s important because we typically think of opinions being fully formed and ideologically consistent but it’s really just a reflexive process in the moment for the most part. it’s a big problem in survey design and methods.
