Yeah, this is basically the main argument a friend of mine has, "We shouldn't give up access to things our oppressors have access to," and while I'm generally anti-gun I can't argue with that. I have a different friend who's absolutely against them, but it seems to be mostly on the grounds that people who have them are much more likely to use them for suicide and home accidents. Basically as far as I can tell the only people who shouldn't be allowed to have guns are white people. That last sentence is only somewhat facetious.

Squalid posted:there's not really anyway around the fact that more guns and easier access to guns in communities causes more deaths. The primary impact of arming minority communities will be that they will die at higher rates. Is there really any option available besides a forceful overthrow that could work though? I say this knowing the forceful overthrow isn't really an option either, at least not for a full scale change, because they can just repeatedly one-up anything regular citizenry would have access to.

As someone who works with gas detection, I could see this being used for inspecting areas that are potentially full of hazardous gasses that you might not be able to get a wheeled robot down into (they made a point of showing off that it could use stairs without much effort). I think it was a branch of the EPA who bought a portable chromatograph from us to inspect areas that might have potential carbon monoxide/dioxide leaks after a bunch of guys went into a basement of a building and died from lack of oxygen after assuming it should be safe. Strap some sensors on that thing and send it in. That being said, you could just give someone an oxygen tank and an intrinsically safe detector to scan for explosion hazards and take samples to measure air quality at a lab with, so until it's cheaper than having a guy you can pay $20/hour with whatever the safety equipment costs to go in and scout while not making bad assumptions, this seems like overkill.

Pener Kropoopkin posted:The big problem I can see with this is that if the robot gets stuck somehow and dies on its 90-minute battery run time, you'd have to send a guy down to retrieve it anyway. That's a valid point, but there would still be a reduced chance of a person having to go in because in that case they would only have to go in if the robot gets stuck, instead of a person going in no matter what. It would be a safety enhancement essentially, which is to say that no one will be willing to spend the extra money because "My guys know what they're doing!" That would also be working on the assumption that that thing is capable of handling any terrain you can present it, even though they only really showed it on a ramp with a few boards on it and stairs, so it's probably safe to bet no one wants to be the one to spend however much it costs to lease one of those only to discover it can't deal with a pile of gravel or something. I shouldn't be spending any time defending this thing until it's proven I guess, I just want robot dogs to be a thing.

Pirate Radar posted:Pornhub has been criticized for allowing videos involving minors on the site (since anyone can post vids and there’s no age verification system). There are also vids on there that depict non consensual acts. The management claims they do everything in their power to take such videos down once they become aware of them but of course they say that. There's also the partnering with a site called Girlsdoporn (I think, I'll have to double-check), who would explicitly lie to performers about where their videos would be distributed or if they would be used, basically getting performers to work by lying to them. That's probably true for a lot of other sites too. Agnostalgia posted:How does that make them any more guilty than any given website that lets users upload videos? It doesn't outside of volume, kind of like Wal-Mart not being the only department store chain with awful treatment of employees but they're the biggest so you go after them to get the most attention for an ongoing issue. Just. Please buy your porn, and try to buy it more directly from performers. I'll admit to not having great suggestions for that aside from like, I don't know, Manyvids, cam sites, Onlyfans, but I don't know exactly what cuts those companies take. Just keep in mind the big porn industry is loving awful.
