Welcome to the Falling Sky Thread!

Falling Sky is the latest COIN by GMT Games and spotlights the Great Revolt: Caesar has already conquered Gaul, but a revolt is being created by the Arverni and their leader Vercingetorix. Alongside the Romans, the Aedui are trying to become filthy rich, while the Belgae are trying to kick the Romans out of Belgica with the help of their leader, Ambiorix and the Germanic tribes are trying to recreate their previous might after their crushing defeat.

Four goons will take each side:
StashAugustine - Romans
homullus - Aedui
COOL CORN - Arverni
Fat Samurai - Belgae

You can find the rules here. We are going to play the Reconquest of Gaul scenario (the one with a deck of 64 cards).

Current Map and Cards:

Current Card: Diviciacus Card 1/64
Druid priest and Aedui noble, Diviciacus was an official friend of Rome even before Caesar's arrival. He had pled emotionally to Caesar for clemency on behalf of his conspiratorial (and deadly rival) Dumnorix. probably out of concern for the impact that Dumnorix's avowed opposition might have on Aedui fortunes. Diviciacus was consistently in Caesar's camp throughout the revolts and, one suspects, a personal friend. He became the key interlocutor between Caesar and Roman-friendly Aedui. In the end, other Aedui leaders - perhaps fearing that the Great Revolt might succeed and leave the Aedui marginalised in a post-Roman withdrawal Gaul - overruled Diviciacus's personal loyalty, and the Aedui fought with Vercingetorix against Rome

Next Card: Avaricum Card 2/64
The Bituriges ("Kings of the World" in Celtic) had been the dominant nation among the Gauls in the past, and so their capital Avaricum (Bourges) may have had extra symbolic value. Caesar's impression of Avaricum upon his arrival there was as "a very large and well-fortified town ...and in a particularly fertile area of the territory". The Bituriges themselves appealed to Vercingetorix not to include the city in his program or devastation because it was "nearly the finest city in the whole of Gaul", and Vercingetorix accepted the argument. Avaricum's central locale in Celtica, moreover, almost certainly gave commercial as well as symbolic merit to the strenuous efforts that both sides in the Great Revolt made to possess it.

Situation:
Caesar is preparing to march north. Under the leadership of their new leader, Ambiorix, the Balgae have risen in revolt and are attempting to reclame Belgica. On the other hand, Caesar's friend Diviciacus, a noble and druid within the Aedui tribe, warns Caesar that the leader of the Arverni, Vercingetorix, is ready to rise in revolt, and claim back Celtica for the Gauls. Will Caesar listen to his warnings?

I'll keep a tally of available forces at the end of each post. Winter is handled this way: For each division of 16 cards, the first 10 cards are guaranteed not Winter, and then within the next 6 cards there is a winter.
So the sequence is 10 cards - 6 cards with a winter - 10 cards - 6 cards with a winter etc.

Yeah, it means you can move them, but actually scouting out the warbands requires a leader.

I'm assuming the two moving in from Atrebetes are from Treveri.

Aedui: 11 Warbands, 4 Allies, 1 Citadel
Belgae: 10 Warbands, 3 Allies, 1 Citadel
Germanic: 6 Warbands, 3 Allies

Situation:
Not heeding the warnings of Diviciacus, Caesar sets march for Belgae, stopping near the lands of the Treveri tribes, currently allied to the Belgae. He sends out his scouts wide and far, hoping to find the Belgae before they can wreck havoc against his scattered troops. It is clear that Ambiorix is on the path to war, and soon a multiple of warbands are found. And usually, where the Roman scouts appear, Legions are soon to follow...

Belgae: 10 Warbands, 3 Allies, 1 Citadel
Germanic: 6 Warbands, 3 Allies

Situation:
Not having been able to make Caesar listen, Diviciacus returned to the Aedui with little to show for his diplomacy. The Aedui nobles were not convinced that it was worth sticking with the Romans and, with the failure of Diviciacus, many of them decided not to collaborate with them, and not to provide them with the necessary resources to help their campaign. Diviciacus, not wanting to drive a wedge within the Aedui confederation, argued his case but eventually had to go along with the edicts of the nobles.

Current Card: Avaricum Card 2/64

Next Card: Marcus Antonius Card 3/64
Related to Caesar, a mentee of political ally Clodius Pulcher, and with successful military experience in the East, Marc Antony came to Caesar's command in Gaul during the latter Gallic Wars. Dashing and aggressive, he was popular with the troops. Caesar saw to Antony's political advancement as, in effect, Caesar's heir and sent him to Rome to become Quaestor, an important public official. Antony was back in time for the 52BC Great Revolt; at Alesia, he held an important sector of the circumvallation and earned his first mention in Caesar's memoir. By 51, he held an independent command in Belgica, sparring with his cavalry against none other than Caesar's old Belgic protege, Commius.

Leveraging the renown of the Bituriges, the Aedui uses the influence and power of Avaricum and its focal point as a trading post for the central part of Celtica to quickly build up alliances with the Pictones and Mandubii, something that turns out to be profitable for all parties involved. Additionally, seeing the coming unrest arriving on the horizon, the defences of Avaricum are strengthened. Both tribes are subdued by the victorious Romans, but at least Ambiorix will live to fight another day. Is the Gaulish revolt destined to be still born?

Situation:
Still preparing for his Great Revolt, Vercingetorix finally manages to convince the tribes of the Aulerci and the Cadurci to join his side, while rallying troops in the Mandubii region. It is clear that the Gauls of Celtica are now taking side: either the Audei or the Averni. For now, the anger of Caesar has only been directed towards the Belgae, but how long will it be before the legions of Rome once again step into the forests of Celtica?

Long beyond Ambiorix's revolt, Belgic alliances continued to rise up against the hated Romans. After Caesar at Alesia had crushed the Great Revolt, the Bellovaci chief Correus joined with Commius the Atrebatian in hope of enlisting numerous Germans nearby and again challenging Caesar in battle. Caesar marched to them with several legions and established impressive fortifications to their front. A series of harassments, skirmishes, and attempted ambushes ended with a clash and Correus's death. Freed of the "rabble-rousing instigator" Correus, the Bellovaci now led the Belgic tribes in finally making peace.

Caesar devotes some chapters to describing the religion of the Celts, including human sacrifice to give confidence in war: "The whole of the Gallic nation is much given to religious practices... For they believe that unless one human life is offered for another the power and presence of the immortal gods cannot be propitiated.

Situation:
Having rallied his warbands as well as he could, Ambiorix marches for war. No warband is left behind and the entire warhost converges towards the lands of the Nervii, and the location of the Roman fort. Along with the Belgic warbands, the Germanic tribes of the Suebi cross the Rhine, joining the mighty host of Belgic tribes. Still bitter after the retreat that sent him in flight previously, it is clear that a large fight is brewing in the future, and the odds do not look favourable to the Romans. Some Belgae tribe even march south from the lands of the Treveri, leaving them dangerously exposed, but cutting the lines of supply for the Romans to the south. Has Caesar stepped into a trap? Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, the situation is coming to a head within Celtica. The revolution finally starts in earnest as two Gauls aligned to the Averni cause, Cotuatus and Conconnetodumnus, start a slaughter of both Roman and Aedui traders alike near the city of Cenabum. The news spreads like wildfire around Celtica and, fearful of retributions against their own tribes, the tribes of the Mandubii, Lictones and Remi pledge neutrality in the coming conflict: although they won't take up arms against Rome (for now), they are cowed enough to call off their direct allegiance with the Romans and their Aedui allies. And with his hands full with the Belgae, there is little that Caesar can do to stem the tide of Vercingetorix.

"This was the name of f a stronghold, practically in the centre of the territory of the Eburones. ... Caesar approved its site for a number of reasons, and in particular because the defence works constructed in the previous year were still whole. ..." At a moment when the heavy baggage of several legions was gathered there, the Sugambri crossed the Rhenus and surprised the Roman fort. Only an impromptu stand at the gate by senior centurion Publius Sextius Baculus enabled the garrison to hold.

Situation:
At a crossroad, Caesar had the option to either retreat his forces in the Nervii territory from the massive host of the Belgae and their Germanic allies, or send the legions in, even with his lines of supply lines cut. A council of war was gathered until finally Caesar sent the orders to march into the Nervii territory and prepare for combat. Once again, the Auxilia was sent far and wide to scout out the positions of the Belgae, something that they managed admirably. It was clear at this point that an epic struggle was brewing, and a great battle would be fought in Belgae for the control of the entire territory. Caesar knew what was coming, but would the legions be able to hold?

"He knew how unreliable were his Gallic allies...". Though Caesar wrote this regarding events in a specific context of 55 BC, it was a motif of all the Gallic wars - and from all sides' perspectives.

Caesar described all Gallic tribes as riven by factions within: "In Gaul there are factions, not only in every state and every village and district but practically in each individual household as well... The same structure holds throughout Gaul as a whole...". Tribal allegiances could shift frequently as competing chieftains within a tribe or confederation waxed and waned in their influence. The conflict between pro-Roman Aeduan Diviciacus and his anti-Roman brother Dumnorix was only one prominent example of such rivalries found throughout Caesar's account. Caesar might not have pointed fingers at Gallic factionalism, however, in light of the rampant and even violent tearing apart of the Roman polity back home during the ongoing death throes of his own Republic.

As in later ages, maneuvers in the vast Ardennes forest presented particular military difficulties and opportunities. Per Caesar , "This forest is the largest in Gaul and stretches from the banks of the Rhine and the land of the Treveri to the Nervii: it is more than 460 miles across." The anti-Roman Treveran Indutiomarus hid young recruits for his warbands there. Ambiorix similarly used it to evade Roman pursuit.

Situation:
Having scattered the Belgae tribes to the winds, Caesar sends a few of his auxiliaries to bring news of his victory to the Treveri tribe, a key tribe since they lie within the path of supply back to Provincia. The Treveri, having heard of the terrible loss by the Belgae, are more than happy to acquiesce to Caesar's requests. Unfortunately, the supply lines is not completely secure, and there are still Belgae tribesmen to the south, in the region of the Sequani, preventing the Roman carts from reaching the legions. Winter is soon to arrive and it is clear that it will be difficult to house the legions without any sort of allies in Belgae.

For example, while making up his losses at Avaricum, Vercingetorix received from a prince of the Nitiobriges - whom the Senate earlier had declared a friend - "a large cavalry force of his own, plus some mercenary horsemen hirede in Aquitania".

Situation:
Vercingetorix, running low on supplies, is forced to send out some raiding party towards the nearby Aquitania in order to gather supplies for the coming winter. Although he is able to do so without any resistance, will this act make him another enemy that he can ill afford?.

Update tonight.

Also, is anyone interested in writing a brief history of the Gallic war (based on what happens in the game) after the game is done?

Well, at the moment my situational updates are pretty disjointed. Someone could add additional detail as well...

Current Map:

Available Forces:
Romans: 9 Auxilia, 3 Forts, 6 Allies
Averni: 22 Warbands, 6 Allies, 3 Citadels
Aedui: 6 Warbands, 5 Allies.
Belgae: 7 Warbands, 4 Allies, 1 Citadel
Germanic: 6 Warbands, 3 Allies

Situation:
Ambiorix, seeing that he needs to build up more allies if he has any chance to build up his army again, entices both the Remi and Sequani to join his cause: this is done more by force of arms rather than diplomacy, as Ambiorix has little in resources or fame after his two big losses to the Romans. Still, having an ally right in the way of the Roman supply line might prove useful in the seasons to come. Ambiorix, having shored up his allies, then tells the Germanic warbands currently present in the Nervii lands to also help cut the supply lines of the Romans by moving into the lightly defended lands of the Treveri.

Caesar, however, is not caught unaware. Shielding his movements by clever use of the Ardennua forest, he moves the mass of his army back South into Treveri lands. Before leaving the Nervii, however, he sets about a vicious campaign of reprisal against the Nervii and Eburones tribes, seizing grain, burning homesteads and sending many of the tribesmen and women into slavery. Using the forest to hide their raiding and foraging parties, there is little the tribes can do. The Treveri meet a similar fate and all three tribes are either captured, diminished or dispersed. "The Belgae won't rise again".

The dispersal of the tribes sends waves of anger flowing through the remaining tribes loyal to the Belgae. Many warbands form in the Atrebates, Morinin and Sequani lands, both from refugees of the Nervii, Treveri and Eburones tribes and spontaneous anger from the other Gauls. It is clear that Ambiorix is ready for war again.

Rolls: (I didn't do any for Averni since they didn't have any region that could rally)
Nervii: 4
Eburones: 2
Treveri: 1

Available Forces:
Romans: 9 Auxilia, 3 Forts, 6 Allies
Averni: 22 Warbands, 6 Allies, 3 Citadels
Aedui: 6 Warbands, 5 Allies.
Belgae: 17 Warbands, 3 Allies, 1 Citadel
Germanic: 6 Warbands, 3 Allies

Current Card: Aquitani Card 11/64
Shaded: Free Battle in either Pictones or Arverni region, inflicting 3 extra Losses, 1 Ally (not Citadel) first.
Unshaded: Your Rally in Pictones and Arverni Regions places 2 extra Warbands each (capability).

Next card: :siren:Winter:siren: Card 12/64

Situation:
The Helvetii, seeing the brutality of the Romans, also decide to join the Belgic tribes in revolt. Unfortunately for Rome, the first snows are now dropping, and winter is rapidly approaching. The frost makes it hard to march and it will be likely that the Romans will have to spend winter within Gaul.

Situation
Even after the raids aimed against the Aquitani, they are still willing to help Vercingetorix in his Great Revolt. Indeed, even though they are acknowledged friends of the Senate, they are more than willing to provide the Arverni with additional horsemen to help them stand against the power of Rome.

Winter

Victory Phase
No one wins.

German Phase
Germans gain ally in Ubii, then rally in Sugambri and Ubii.

Germans in Ubii march on 1-3 to Treveri and 4-6 Sequani: d6 = 2.
Germans in Treveri stay in place and flip to hidden.
Germans in Sugambri move to Nervii and gain control.

No germans can raid (fort present in both Nervii and Treveri).

Germans ambush in Nervii but do 0 losses (1/2 + 1/2) / 2 = 1/2, round down to 0.
Germans ambush in Treveri. Caesar rolls a 4 and is thus not caught unaware. Losses by germans are 5 and a 1/2, halved for Fort to 2 1/2, 2 losses total.
Caesar counter-attacks and eliminates 11 germans.

Current Map:

Available Forces:
Romans: 11 Auxilia, 3 Forts, 6 Allies
Averni: 22 Warbands, 6 Allies, 3 Citadels
Aedui: 3 Warbands, 4 Allies.
Belgae: 8 Warbands, 3 Allies, 1 Citadel
Germanic: 13 Warbands, 2 Allies

Current Card: Winter Card 12/64

Next Card: Gallic Shouts Card 13/64
Unshaded: Romans may look at the next 2 facedown cards and either execute a free Limited Command or be Eligible.
Shaded: A Gallic Faction executes 1 Command and 1 Limited Command, in either order, free, no Battles.
In discussing the onset of the Great Revolt, Caesar notes a form of Celtic telegraph that could transit a distance of 160 miles in one day: "News...spread rapidly to all Gallic states, for wherever an event of particular note or significance takes place the Gauls shout it abroad in the countryside and the villages, others then take up the cry and pass it on to their neighbours. So it happens on this occasion, for what had taken place at dawn in Cenabum was made known before the end of the first watch in Arvernian territory..."

Situation:
The Aedui, spreading their influence and wealth, manage to make a pact with the Namnetes: this is mostly done thanks to the arrival into Gaul of several shipments of Roman goods, which manage to make the Aedui tribes relatively wealthy, although still unwilling to supply Roman armies on the fields. Shoring up their defences, the confederation also calls to arm their allies in the Pictones, Bituriges and Aedui regions of Celtica.

Meanwhile, in the east, the Germanic tribes finally stir up. Sensing an opportunity, they march where the large Roman army is currently encamped near the burning remains of the Treveri villages. Unfortunately for them, Caesar is not caught unaware and although the Germans are able to ambush a part of the Roman auxilia, the Germanic warbands are then caught into an ambush of their own and largely eliminated, with Caesar hunting down and dispersing the Germans and preventing them from crossing the Rhine. Another glorious victory for Rome!

Aedui: 3 Warbands, 4 Allies.

Next Card: Baggage Trains Card 14/64
Unshaded: Take this card and place it at your Forces display. Your March costs 0 Resources.
Shaded: Take this card. Your raids may use 3 Warbands per Region and steal Resources despite Citadels or Forts.
"A number of the Belgae and other Gauls who had surrendered were following in Caesar's train and journeying along with our army...During that time some of these men were observing our army's usual order of march. They then went by night to the Nervii and explained to them how a large amount of baggage was okaced between the individual legions. Once the first legion had entered the camp, and while the other legions were still far behind, they said, it would be no trouble to attack the first legion while it was still encumbered with heavy packs, and once it was routed and all the baggage plundered, the other legions would not dare resist."

The discussion from 57 BC shows how important and vulnerable to raid and attack baggage trains were. And this was true not only for the Romans, but for Gallic armies as well. The more horses and wagons an army mustered to move its supplies, the less it had to rely on local resources, and so the more readily it could march.

Situation:
As winter approaches, Caesar wisely decides to send his armies back to Provincia, so that he doesn't have to cut into the valuable supplies that he has gathered from the dispersed tribes. This does mean that the forts in Belgica will be left unattended, but to garrison troops there would require the bringing of provisions across Celtica. Fortunately, the Aedui are on hand to provide safe passage and the Legions and Auxilia return to Provincia untouched and ready to hunker down for the winter. The harvests are brought in finally and Celtica becomes quiet as the fighting dies down. The relative peace is brief, as soon the snow thaws and the Legions of Rome will soon be back, to march into Celtica and stop the revolt.
