Yost isn't accounting for the New Jersey variable, where nothing makes any drat mathematical sense there. He might turn into Karlsson in Edmonton.

we are going to find out that new jersey's extremely favorable home scorer has been responsible for larsson looking like a decent defenseman in the numbers, and it turns out he's actually the biggest sieve in the league

Larsson has never really been a scorer at any level so I'm not sure where this idea that he's going to suddenly develop those offensive instincts comes from. He also didn't really light up the world on a roster that featured Kovalchuk and Parise in their primes, although to be fair he was a rookie that year and I don't think he had much of a chance to play with them.

i believe a given point on the X-axis is the set of games within the sample where Larsson (or the Devils w/o Larsson) were at xx% offensive zone deployment

he doesn't cite what his sample sizes so i can't answer #2, and the sample size might change the answer to #3

when larsson is deployed offensively, his shot differential improves by a lot relative to his team, but their expected goals see a negligible positive change and their actual goals see a significant negative change. i'd take that to mean larsson is getting or contributing to a lot more shots when deployed offensively but they are not of especially high quality and are not producing much in the way of goals

ok that's what i thought. i'd guess that the sample size above a certain OZ% threshold would decrease dramatically, and i wouldn't be surprised if that threshold is pretty close to where you see the GF start to drop off. doesn't give me a ton of confidence in drawing the conclusion that the discrepancy between CF% and GF in the high OZS% situations is because larsson can't produce high quality chances, as opposed to just being an artifact of small N

anyway, getting a bit pedantic, but i was curious about the way some of those stats are derived. there's not going to be any way to cut the stats that make it look like anything but an historically bad trade for the oilers though lol peter

The only way this reflects well on Chiarelli is if Hall does poorly for the next 2-3 years (likely because he's injured) and Larsson has a serious improvement.

And it would still be a bad trade because it's awful asset management. It doesn't matter if he gets lucky and everything comes up Pete, you shouldn't make trades that only work if you get lucky.

Yeah franchising is one thing, I'm talking about the guys who want to build restaurants and bars and think they can totally run it themselves because "Well how hard could it be?"

If you wanna throw some money into a place that's going to be managed and run by someone who's done this stuff before and knows what they're doing, go to town.

He was deployed where he should be, mostly on the left half-wall. The problem was the Oilers had limited options in front of the net and on the right, and essentially nobody on the blue capable of distributing the puck. That's why adding Adam Larsson will make such a huge GOD loving DAMMIT CHIA

Mark Fayne is the thing that would have me terrified about this deal if I were an Oilers fans.. like I know that Fayne did not have the draft pedigree that Adam Larsson has, but I still remember the articles from even the analytics guys praising the signing of under-rated / tough zone starts / stealth corsi monster Mark Fayne by the Edmonton Oilers. He had one good year on the top pairing (playing a remarkably similar role with Andy Greene to what Larsson did last year) and then he flopped in Edmonton because he has 0 offensive instincts and couldn't handle playing in a system that isn't as rigidly structured as the one that New Jersey uses.

I'm not saying that Adam Larsson is going to be a huge disaster in Edmonton, but the potential is real..

Other teams should almost never trade for or sign Devils, period. Certain guys just thrive in that structure and are lost outside of it.
