 Felix Bedford IIIIt's been a slow day for Felix. There was no karate club today, and apart from his parents taking him out to pick up some fresh school supplies, the weather continues to suggest that it's a good day to keep to one's self. So it is that Felix has busied himself with re-arranging his tiny little closet of a room for the coming school term by hanging up a few poster print-outs of Bruce Lee, Yoshitaka Funakoshi, Shihan Masatoshi Nakayama, and other martial artists on the walls of his room, and by finding new placements for his handmade shuriken and nunchaku, his school supplies, the two clockwork toys his father made for him, and the various little things a young man attaches value to, even if value really only is in the context of sentiment. The star of Felix's room is his new computer, which his parents bought for him shortly after they arrived in Japan. It's not particularly remarkable as far as computers go. It's second-hand, it needed some intensive cleaning upon purchase; but this computer is Felix's first private computer, and only just now has he finally found the perfect, most comfortable arrangement for it and his desk. Yes, this will do nicely. He could comfortably spend hours here if he felt inclined. He relaxes in his desk chair with a sense of satisfaction in his newly-arranged space. Felix hears his parents begin watching some ludicrous Japanese game show in the living room from his seat. The novelty of foreign TV still hasn't worn off on them! Smiling at his parents' laughter he reaches for his new VR gear that his mom bought him to enjoy with his new computer and logs into Digital Devil Worlds. Having logged-in, he ignores the patch notes almost entirely: "I chooseth this fate of mine own free will." [ x ] ACCEPT [ ] DECLINE Accepted into the Red Panda Appreciation Society, and invited into an instance!? Well, today might not be so slow after all! ---  Brackish_GaijinUnsure of what to make of Takamura's guffaws, but appreciative of the friendly clap on the shoulder and "I got your back", Brackish_Gaijin smiles and waits for Takamura to continue on his train of thought while taking in the other members of the instance. Felix Bedford III Wow this is so cool! Felix agrees to exchange friend info, and selects Nigi Mitama (Temperance) as his Support Personnel after carefully considering the choices for a minute or so. "Better to have some extra 'luck' on hand", he says to himself. Brackish_GaijinBrackish_Gaijin takes in the hellscape. He's seen a few screenshots of DDW's hells, but they don't quite compare to being here. He patiently listens to Takamura, but none of what he has to say is really news to him so far. He smirks at Flagelo's impatience, half hoping to see her charge straight into the skeletons with a mighty battle cry. Would he follow her? No. But it would be funny. Brackish_Gaijin .attak's intimidation tactic seemed a little excessive to Brackish_Gaijin even though it got an answer. He smiles sympathetically at the apparition and nods in agreement with Capo Kappo's words to her. [GROUP WHISPER]: "Just a thought: If we can find some tickets, let's give the little ghost girl one. Maybe it'll unlock something else? What do you think, Takamura" "Yeah, we're not here to harm you. Hey we might even be able to help you. Say," Brackish_Gaijin trails off as he gestures his open left hand to the massive colossal door built into the side of an impassable stone wall, ringed by wicked flaming skeleton pillars, "any idea what's behind those doors?"

Lyth's actions are a game-changer. He scratches his temple and types into the group chat: [GROUP TEXT] "Nice going, Lyth!" Okay, so these guys are for real! This is going to be fun. Brackish_Gaijin The unfamiliar but delicious-looking dish flung to Bracky from Cappo Kapo's skillet hits the spot as Bracky finds his second wind and notes the meal's bonuses in his HUD. "Hey, thanks Cappo! What else can you use that thing for?" Bracky's eyes widen as Cappo's "UMAMI BOMB!" devastates the area and answers his question for him. That's a cool custom mod, that skillet! he thinks to himself as he selects the meal's buff to his ninja reflexes (of course). How would a warrior handle this situation? Well, a warrior certainly wouldn't leave his allies to fight a more deadly foe to fight less formidable ones! Where's the honour in that? And with that thought, Bracky leaves the shambles to which Lyth has reduced the skeletons before him to join the rest of the party with his dagger now sheathed and his short bow in hand, ready to pump an arrow or two into the clockwerk-hell-coffin-spider-monstrosity in the mere seconds it would take for his allies to distract it enough for him to ninja-flip onto it... and.. and–wait a second! Why the hell weren't the skeletons attacking the Bouncer too? It wasn't this Raiding Party keeping them from the hellshow, after all. "Why aren't the skeletons helping us mess-up the Bouncer?" He thinks aloud into his mic (which is set to <PARTY> by default). Yeah, Miyamoto Musashi would be pleased with that split-second reasoning: get your enemies to kill each other! Of course, this is a videogame after all. No matter how immersive it is, logic need not apply. Brackish_Gaijin doesn't wait for a response. Felix Bedford III The exchange with Takamura stung. Felix could feel the colour rising to his cheeks as he admitted to himself that he'd violated what was expected of a martial master: always come prepared! Preparations only account for so much of the battle though; it's how one responds to a challenge that one is measured. Facing-up to the embarassment was a challenge in and of itself. At least it wasn't his real face that was doing the facing up. Felix takes a deep breath before carrying on the exchange. At least the Red Panda Appreciation Society is welcoming and understanding of newbies–even if those newbies had blundered their way into Stupid Newbie status! After a steady exhale, Felix types a thanks to Takamura for his patience and for the equipment, attaching the 20 GP for the new equipment. Unwilling to use the mic, he texts the group, a "Sorry all". -20 GP for new equipment Felix shakes his head. The weight of the VR headset over his face makes the action seem awkward and unfamiliar, much like everything about life these past few months. You're new. It's new. They get it. He says to himself as he manipulates his controllers more urgently in hopes of redemption. He smiles in reassurance to himself: okay, time to kick some rear end instead of being one. Brackish_Gaijin"I can't believe that thing's still moving!" Bracky chimes weakly into his mic. He winds up the weighted end of his Kusari-gama as Memento disappears and lands the hard iron weight on the top of the whirring hell coffin with a mighty crack that made Felix grateful his headphones weren't turned-up to bust. The Bouncer flattens, its legs skittering in place, as Bracky moves in with the sickle part of his awesome weapon and spears the thing with the sickle. It splutters and cracks as the cruel implement finds its new sheath. Bracky smiles. Finally, a ninja can act as one! Felix Bedford III As the remains of the bouncer coalesced into the void, Felix felt himself relax. He pauses to sip at a now warm glass of water before resuming. He watches Lyth take off with the ticket, momentarily wondering if the person behind Lyth is really as insufferable as her avatar during her exchange with the Little Ghost Girl. MMOs really do bring out all types. But Lyth's self-aggrandizing is quickly forgotten when the gates to the next section open up. Brackish_GaijinTaking the others' lead, he decides to just observe the others for now. He's feeling pretty good: He done killed a bouncer, and he made good on his ...promise? to get the little ghost girl a ticket–and now she's available as a Persona! Cool! Miyuki really catches Bracky's eye. Maybe it was the katana. Maybe it was the robotic arm. Maybe it– "Hey, Takamura," he says, still eyeing Miyuki, but breaking eyecontact to address Takamura more directly "um... this Necroforge. Kay, dumb question, but can we access this mindscape at anytime to, uh, make or purchase things? Like, can I improve my ninjato into a necrotising hellsword here somehow?" _______ .attak's smooth maneuver interrupts the explaination: "Good move, buddy! Hey, those gauntlets are in my colour! I'll take 'em if no one else will"

Brackish_Gaijin [GROUP:] "Yeah, I'm taking those gantlets for sure!" Bracky picks up the gloves and admires them for a moment before slipping them on, waiting for the automated dice roll icon to appear in the HUD to tell him whether anyone else is competing with him for them. They suit the black cloth of his ninja outfit nicely, or at least so he thinks. Another glance at Miyuki has Bracky wondering if there's anything around here that would help him buff-up his av. Just as he's about to look around at the vendors, Miyuki's icy words take Bracky a little off guard. Surely someone who clearly put a lot of effort into their av was used to having it admired? MMOs really do attract all types. "Not used to having your av admired, hey?" He smiles as her icy stare takes in the ninja. What more could he say? If she's not a dude in real life, or even if she is, her av is the spitting image of true cool beauty. Her voice didn't sound like a dude's. Miyuki was only an av, of course, and Bracky knew that, but the meditative poise, the power, the attention to detail, and the predilection for katanas had him momentarily wrapped. Suddenly she was talking to him! "I-we'll try not to. Get ambushed, that is." And her warm smile on her once icy demeanour makes him want to say more, but he thought better of it. He had the feeling he'd hear from her again soon. He [ACCEPTS] Miyuki's Beginner's Mocha x3, and bows in gratitude: "Thanks for those! I bet they'll come in handy. Good luck on your hunt." Felix Bedford III Felix finds a vendor specializing in basic kit, and purchases a grappling hook with 50' of rope line. He finally tunes into his [GROUP], and rolls his eyes over the leadership conversation. [GROUP]: "Hey, let's wait until this sesh is over to find out who the leader is. We can vote on that once we've got this Mindscape to look back on, okay?" He purchases his new gear, hearing the satisfying, antiquated cash register "DING" in his headset that represents an exchange of currency (-2GP for GRAPPLING HOOK & 50' HEMPEN ROPE), and joins the rest of the group in the instance. Brackish_GaijinColours swirl around Bracky and he finds himself near his companions in the instance. He looks around to get his bearings and assesses the area for possible dangers, but he is interrupted: .attak has fallen into a trap! Without a single breath, Brackish_Gaijin winds up his Kusari-Gama to execute his Ninja-to Rush on the chain biting into .attak. He attacks .attak's chain: 1d20+8 28 for a DEAD-ONhit: 1d10+5 dealing a total of 10 damage to the chain. The weighted end of his Kusari-gama winds down on its chain from the attack: "You can kit-out your Mindscapes with traps too!?" The more Bracky sees of this user-based virtual reality around him, the more he admires it, and the more he feels unnerved: this is more than a few developers coming up with exciting little quirks to keep players from falling asleep; this Mindscape was constructed by a player and defended by their own imagination! Brackish_Gaijin Mapple blasts Brackish_Gaijin with Crown of Stars, and then she retreats as he approaches–a typical move for a caster. Oh well. Hero & Heart appear: now it's a proper ambush! The shuriken meant for <Miss> Mapple swirls with a rusty miasma as it flies forth from the ninja's hand into Heart's massive, armoured torso. Brackish watches the hulking Ganker with fascination as the poison's devastating effects manifest. A thick fog begins to obscure Brackish_Gaijin! The last thing Heart would see of Brackish_Gaijin before he becomes totally obscured in the Mists is the smile on the ninja's face as he reaches for the sickle-end of his Kusari-Gama.

Felix Bedford III: is shocked by Capo's fall and recovery. [GROUP]: "Glad you're still with us, chef!" Heart had a lucky blow, no question about it. Bracky's poisoned shuriken clearly struck a weakness, that much is clear. Felix had never successfully used it in PvP before; it felt satisfying watching Heart crumple. And now Heart is no more! Momentarily savouring the hulking avatar's disintegration into nothingness, he turns his attention to Hero. Brackish_Gaijin: Still enshrouded in the mysterious fog of his own making, Brackish begins to wind the weighted end of his Kusari-Gama like a windmill by his side as he charges at Hero. The weapon builds momentum; in less than a moment all that can be heard is an ominous WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!, until the weighted end smashes into Hero's skull. Felix Bedford III: Shakes his head disapprovingly over Takamura's AFK: microphones have an off switch for a reason after all. And now the <Princess> has returned home for the evening; worse, she's alerted to our presence! Felix spouts a number of very Cockney slurs that he'd learned from his father which would sound more comical and eccentric than offensive to any would-be listeners. Luckily Felix has the good sense to keep his mic off when he's not using it–unlike Takamura. [GROUP]: "I think we'd better take down these gankers and make an exit," Felix agrees with Flagelo. "I'm not sure we can beat <Princess>, as much as I'd like to try. Hopefully Sensei comes back in time–" His agreement is cut short when his avatar's attack versus Hero goes horribly wrong, and his HUD begins to flash, alternating between red and blacking-out, warning that his character is now in critical condition. Brackish_Gaijin "AAAAAAAGH!" Brackish_Gaijin's avatar auto-emotes in response to Hero's initial attack. The sword now withdrawn from his shoulder, Brackish_Gaijin is still in trouble. The Iron Maiden Chain around his neck prevents him from uttering "Help!". drat it all!Luckily, .attak is on the case, brutally attacking Hero and thereby giving Capo the chance to help Brackish escape the trap. Brackish pauses a moment to take advantage of the opportunities Capo and Nigi Mitama have given him to heal before moving on.

Brackish_Gaijin With .attak's show of valour at his back, and Takamura's urging them into a new sense of urgency, Brackish_Gaijin summersaults underneath the blade as it begins retracting for another deadly slice. With his kusari-gama, he first bashes the trap mechanism with the weighted end, and shifts in close with the sickle end of his weapon to sever some wires and hydraulic tubes forced out of the mechanism by his first attack. The guillotine grinds to a halt just before it is fully retracted. [GROUP]: Let's get that treasure!

Maybe it's a fault in Bracky's understanding of the Japanese language, but he's not quite sure what to make of her comment on... needing help? Something... Brackish_Gaijin: accepts the guild invites and adds all of his new contacts to his buddy list. He then returns to the 'forge to transmogrify Mask of the Cackling Imp into a cool ninja face mask. Bracky takes pains to make sure he doesn't transmog his new mask into a full baclava; for whatever reason the controls are difficult to tweak. by the time he's done with it it's more of a piece of black cloth that covers the lower half of Bracky's face, allowing his av's platinum blond hair to hang out freely from his black cloth hood. Pleased, he exits DDW for the night. Felix Bedford III: rubs the static out of his eyes with a yawn, giving it no further thought.The alarm rings, interrupting his bizarre dream. He considers going to his computer to write it down. It was weird enough to merit remembering it, but the wonderful smell of breakfast wafting around the corner from the kitchenette puts the thought out of his mind. He goes to the kitchen; his mom pauses to smile at him from an extended tree pose. "Morning mom! Where's dad?" She answers, and motions him towards the kitchen for his breakfast. He pauses a moment, wondering if mother will join him, but she assumes another pose, and he figures "Thanks for breakfast, mom" he calls from the kitchen. "It looks great!" He digs in. EDIT: Felix arrives in class, and is a little shocked that the teacher openly smokes in class. When called upon, Felix simply says, "Hi everyone. I'm Felix. I'm from Canada, but I've also lived in Germany, and now I live here. I really like karate and, well, a lot of different styles of martial arts actually. I'm looking forward to this term, and I hope I get to meet you all." And with that, Felix sits down, feeling his nerves begin to relax a little as the other students begin to introduce theirselves. Felix Bedford III To Felix's relief, everyone seems friendly enough. He is the most different-looking student he's aware of, but that might work to his advantage, right? Otherwise the new school feeling is not really all that different than the new school feeling in any of the three–or is it four now?–schools he's been to since he'd started school at the age of five, really, except this time his studies are in a language he's a little less comfortable with. He feels a slight twinge of anxiety as he looks through the class syllabus and he resigns himself to his fate: he will really have to put in effort to stay on top of his studies this year. Finding Kane, or rather Kane finding him (how that guy can get the drop on Felix every time is beyond him), in the elegant dining hall is nothing short of a relief. And Kane's sporting a pic of a very cute cosplay girl to boot! "Oh, man! I'd totally swipe right if I were you," he agrees, enjoying the view a little longer and adding with a devious grin, "Got any more?" They joke and chat a bit, the lunch hour melting away just as time always does in good company (quickly), and in a break in conversation Felix takes a moment for another look around before asking his friend, "So, Kane, who's who here?"

 : "Good taste, bro." He does indeed swipe right! He hums as he swiftly tacks out a casual pick-up line, then goes back to swiping through the dating site galley. "Hey look, another blonde. Should I swipe right for you?" Felix Bedford III: "Hell yeah, man!" He says looking at the image, "Looks like my type." He runs his hand through his hair: it's the only sign of his nerves working at top speed. The obligatory chat window pops up."Uh, drat, bro, I'm never sure what to say. Hold on, let me think," he puts his thumb and forefinger on his chin while he thinks a moment–a move he unwittingly inherited from his father. "Alright, yeah, let's say I'm new in town. Oh, and ask her what she does for fun around here," he chuckles playfully as Kane hits the send button and puts away his mobile. "Hopefully it'll be me before too long", punctuating it with a playful jab at Kane's arm. They joke around a bit; they talk about girls, talk about sparring. "So, who's who 'round here?" :"I'm pretty new too, but I hear the school has a real queen of a class president. Maybe we can chat her up one day..." Felix Bedford III: "Oh for sure, for sure!" he says enthusiastically. And the conversation moves back to Karate.: "I hope they got some skill here, man. Trashing white belts is kinda dull." : "Yeah, it'd be pretty sweet if we get lots of hands in this year. Hope we get some more seniors too; definitely could use some sage, old, black-belt wisdom, yaknow?" He attempts to execute a clean Age Uke to gently block his favourite sparring-partner's right swipe [Whether successful or failure, it's in the spirit of good fun] and grins at the lovely specimen who is dressed to impress. He smiles warmly at her, and shares a look with Kane. "Dare you to go up and talk to her, bro!"_______________________ The day passes quickly. If Karate Club is going ahead tonight, Felix is there after school; if it's not going ahead today because it's the first day of school, Felix heads home intending to get started reading-ahead on his school work. Upon arriving home, he finds his folks watching their favourite game show. He acknowledges his parents, and remarks, "Hey, that's the knot Alexander solved by slicing it with his sword, right?"  : "Felix! How was your first day?" Felix Bedford III: "Really good, dad!" he responds in English, "Kane–you know, my sparring partner in Karate–goes there too, so I've got someone I know there at least. Looks like I've got a lot of work ahead of me though. Not sure my Japanese is up to scratch, but I'm sure it will be after this term. How was your day? What's new?"After supper, Felix returns to his room and his parents return to their game shows. He reads the first chapter in each of his subject, though not overly thoroughly. He's just attempting to familiarize himself with the material for the next day like his parents suggested he do. He looks out his little room's window and is about to take out his cellphone to see if anything's on the go when his computer's message centre ringtone beckons him. Turns out he's 1000 gold richer. At least, he is in DDW. Felix Bedford III: Sits at his desk and proceeds to log in. He accepts the attached 1000 Gold and proceeds to look through the purchase lists to freshly deck-out his character. To the Guild Chat's request to help clear the Temple Ruins, he looks at the clock and deliberates a moment. Aw, what the hell. Shouldn't take more than an hour ... So he responds, pre:[Ailuridae] Brackish_Gaijin: Ya, I'll help clear some Temple Ruins so long as we can do it right now. His dreams melt into the Velvet Room, but it's different: it's absent the little fineries he's been adding to customize it. He's not alarmed; he feels as if this is all in due-course, another gaming day. He approaches the tea table in the centre where the strange man sits apparently waiting for him. "Yeah, I'll have some tea." Taking the tea from the tray, he notices the black cloth wraps around his hands are–Well, these were his own hands. Huh, weird." The strange man introduces his topic, to which Felix replies, "The colour of my soul, huh? Okay, I'm interested, so what can you tell me about the colour of my soul?"

Felix Bedford III Dream Felix hears Igor out. This is strange. Still unaware that this is a dream, Felix goes on impulse, feeling the (gravitational?) pull of the Moon card. His blue eyes look from the cards to Igor, "Well alright, Moon." He takes a sip of his tea confident in his choice however impulsive it may have been. Day He looks at Kane's text. Okay, I'm gonna get up and have some breakfast. Wanna meet up before school?" He's feeling a surge of excitement about his date that he hasn't felt since he's moved to Japan! After his conversation with Kane, Felix goes to the bathroom, has a shower, brushes his teeth, combs his hair and makes himself presentable. He's confident with this sort of thing: he might be young, but he's dated before, and there's nothing quite like the nervous excitement one has before a date. There is no cologne in the house. Hopefully Kane was only joking about that. They're lucky to have toothpaste and soap in the house for goodness sake! But, as always, Felix makes-do without complaint. He proceeds to his closet. It contains only a few shirts, jeans, his gi, one good second-hand suit, and his school uniform. Unfortunately, his choice is made for him in this case: school protocol demands he wear the uniform. Too bad, really. Felix doesn't have a lot of clothes, and the permutations of outfits may be limited, but Felix has a knack for pulling off whatever he wears, even if all he has to wear has been acquired in second-hand shops. Felix Bedford III Felix is greeted by his parents' warm smiles in the kitchen. He clearly chose his clothes well: they seem impressed with him. "Kane says we've got 'dates' this afternoon after school," he replies, making air quotes around the word "dates". "I'm not sure who it is, but I thought I'd better bring out the ol' Bedford Charm." His father needles him in the arm with a grin. His mom rises from the table and returns with a handsome ascot in Academy colours! "MOM! NO WAYYY!" He says, surprised, amazed–both! He gathers up his mom in a big hug. "That looks amazing! Um... how do I put it on?" Sensing his fatherly wisdom is in demand, his dad sits up and walks over to help him out. A few seconds later Felix looks at his reflection in the little piece of mirror his mom keeps near the sink, and adjusts the knot in the ascot a little more to the centre. "This looks really good; I LOVE IT! Thanks mom!" Before too long it is time for Felix to begin his walk to school. He taps out a quick text to Kane while descending the stairs of the apartment complex at a brisk pace, sending it off just before he pushes through the fire doors on the main floor. Felix's Text Msg posted:"Kane, I'm on my way to school. I'll be at the Commons if you want to meet up with me there. Gimme a shout! Felix enjoys the walk. The grey skies forebode rain, but the damp air smells quite fresh and pleasant. He checks his phone once more before crossing the street to arrive at Naoki Academy. Once there, he makes his way to the commons. He decides to keep an eye and an ear out for familiar voices or faces from either DDW or Karate, or elsewhere.
