Everybody knows the story of Luke Skywalker, a farm boy turned starfighter turned Jedi knight, who saved the galaxy and defeated the Empire. But of the many stories in the years before Skywalker’s victory, not many are known. And far fewer are as outstanding as the tale of Grey Squadron.

Sedri II - Blackeye Post

Blackeye Post. What a backwater shithole. But, that's probably what made it such a great secret base for the Rebellion. A thick localized asteroid field surrounding Sedri II also means difficulty navigating and sensing electronics for Imperial scanners.

Fused together two CR90 corvettes, likely when they crashed together in some long-forgotten fight, Blackeye Post was, for untold years, just some forlorn trading post that was mostly ignored by the authorities, largely because it was too hard to find. Situated evenly between the sector capital and Huttspace, it proved the perfect opportunity for the Rebellion to install a launching point into the sector. Unfortunately, facing scant resources and many uncooperative locals on board, Commander Forney managed very little, and the resident squadron, the Boxers, lost members to injury and defection faster then Rebel Command could ship them out.

Facing completely abandoning Blackeye, Forney had one final card to play. He called in a couple favors, recruited a few more crewmembers, and got assigned a training squadron - and that's where you come in. Your arrival last night, aboard some junker shuttle, was less than welcomed by the locals, and the 12 X-Wings parked in the upper half of Blackeye was explanation enough for the coldness. But you aren't here to make friends, you're here to fight and fly as one. Which… will be pretty hard, considering that everybody seems like a bunch of misfits. Old, scared, weird - as you glance around the briefing room, you can't help but wonder where the hell the Rebellion found people like this.

But then again, it found you, so maybe this won't be so bad?

---

Welcome to Grey Squadron, a playtest for the Powered by the Apocalypse-based Full Throttle. Check the documentation, pick a playbook, make a character, and write some backstory. To begin, you'll all be flying X-Wings, detailed below, but if this goes long enough, there will definitely be opportunities to fly different kinds of ships.

MAGE CURES PLOT

Grey Five - "Crash" Waru, Ewok pilot (The Experiment)
Yub Nub, Motherfuckers

In a research station on my homeworld of Endor, Imperial Researcher Dr. Men Gaila performed unspeakable genetic experiments on the primitive tribes of Ewok with the goal of creating expendable pilots. As far as I know I was the only success. I managed to escape and stole a shuttle to escape. By the time I could return with help, the lab had been cleared out and destroyed. Seeing as the Empire did this to me, AND that they hunt down and torture non-humans, the rebellion seemed like the only place for me. They may respect my skills, but I am far from accepted among these "allies".

Moves
  • Successful Experiment
You can do something spectacular because of what they did to you.
Combat Specialist - Carry +2 forward to any clash with roll if it is against another being.
Ewok are a race of mighty warriors, An X-Wing isn't a spear, but the spirit remains the same.

  • YUB NUB Fear me
When you invoke your different nature to ice out, manipulate, or clash with, add Grey to your roll.

Apex
When you defeat the person that changed you, enter your Apex.

You’ve finally put an end to the person that made you what you are. Finally, you can rest soundly. If you choose to retire, make a new character. If you don’t, +1 Red, -1 Blue, and the person that changed you escapes because of something you did, and goes back to doing bad things.

When your Red is +2, become The Tainted. Reset your Colors but keep all your moves. Your chosen set for The Black Mark is: Let a killer free - Empathy - hit on.

Formation
Dr. Gaila, my creator, is out there somewhere. I will track him down and I will make sure he never does to another innocent being what he did to me.

Grey Three, Damaya "Winter" Culu

The Empire destroyed my planet, slaughtered my people. They view us as a threat to their power, a threat to their vision for the universe. The funny thing? If they had left us alone, I'm not sure we would have done anything. The Miraluka are very deliberate in their actions. I am not. I've learned the value in acting on my instincts. They've kept me alive so far. I joined up with the Alliance to get a shot at the Empire. This gig, Grey Squadron, is my first real posting. I... haven't heard the greatest things about Blackeye Post. Well, I guess I really hadn't heard anything before getting on the shuttle. But onboard? drat. I wonder which toes I stepped on to get assigned here.

I hope the Force will be with me. If half the things I hear are true, I'm going to need it.

Moves

Powerful - You have a special connection with a greater power that you don’t understand. Gain a new Color, called Power. Power starts at -2, and doesn’t reset when you change playbooks. Whenever you Advance as The Sensitive, put a point into Power.

When anybody rolls a 7 or 9 near to you when not flying, you can try to affect the roll by changing the 9 to a 10 or the 7 to a 6. To do so, roll Power. On 10+, change the roll. On 7-9, change the roll, but suffer -1 ongoing to Power until the end of the scene and gain the Drained Condition. On a miss, suffer -2 ongoing to Power until the end of the scene.

You Can Do That? - Whenever somebody recognizes your connection to the power and respects it, build a Link with them.

Apex
When you reach Power +2, enter your Apex.

You finally accept that you’re ready to master your Power. If you want to, retire and make a new character. If you don’t, become The Alien. Reset your Colors except Power (never reset that) but keep all your moves. Your Alien Physiology should represent your newfound powers.

Formation
Miraluka see the galaxy through the lens of the Force. Winter has the raw potential to do more with that connection. She'd need to study with the Luka Sene to more fully understand her gifts -- if any survived the destruction of Alpheridies.

Links
Somebody is in love with you. Build a Link with them.

Somebody has a reason to hate the power you’re connected with. Break any Links they would build with you initially.

Grey Six, Calum "Turncoat" Vessery (The Ace)

Calum could never really measure up against his more successful brother, Broak, try as he might. Both brothers joined the Imperial Academy at the same time, both excelled, and although Calum knew that he was the better pilot, the instructors always noted that Broak had a 'better aptitude towards leadership'. As soon as both brothers were out of the Academy, Broak ascent to the top was quick: he some became a Flight Leader and from there, a Squadron Leader. Calum, on the other hand, was always on top on the kill boards, but was always ignored from promotion for being too hot-headed, an opinion in which even his brother voiced.

Some people switch sides because of a personal reason, some due to a family tragedy at the hands of the Empire, or because they witnessed an atrocity caused by Imperial troops. Calum didn't join the Rebels for any of those reason: he simply joined out of injured pride. If he wasn't going to be able to equal his brother within the Imperial Navy, he would beat him (as he knew he could) as a member of the Rebel Alliance.

Moves

To be the Best - When somebody does something better than you or embarrasses you, you can add them to your list of rivals. Take +1 ongoing to any action meant to one-up or embarrass a rival. If you succeed, remove them from your list of rivals.

Tease - You remind people that you can do things better than them. When you inspire action, you may roll Red + Links on them . If you do, break a Link with them regardless of the results.

Apex

When you eject, enter your Apex.

You’ve been shown up—your talents weren’t enough to save you from the humiliation of getting bested in battle. If you get angry about it, +1 Grey, -1 Blue. If you forgive yourself, +1 White, -1 Red.

When your White is +2, become The Coach. Reset your Colors but keep all your moves.

When your Grey is +2, become The Tainted. Reset your Colors but keep all your moves. Your chosen set for The Black Mark is: Blew up a lot of ships - Flying - take a shot.

Formation

The Empire has little regards for the rebels, and TIE pilots especially feel an inordinate amount of pride about the fact that they fly un-shielded ships that rely on speed and maneuvering in order to survive, while their rebel counterparts for the most part fly slower, shielded ships. Grey squadron, as a training squadron, has barely registered as an opponent to the pilots of the Imperial Navy and as such, it is seen as an easy prey, ready for destruction.

Links

You begrudgingly admire the skills of another pilot. Build a Link together with them and add them to your list of rivals.

You’re standoffish. Break any other Links others would build with you initially.

Yes, playbook ship moves can be taken initially, and count into your move selection.

If so I picked an extra move, and I'll take one out.

Kind of, I guess, since the only reliable way to get them is through the Requisition move during the planning phase or through player bribes. Not sure why you would want to use them like AW barter, though, when the gameplay implications of getting to pick an upgrade or shore up a key stat on your ship are useful for many rolls to come.

In practice, I'm not sure it matters when your ship stats are capped (whatever the cap is -- the usual PbtA +3?) and your damage limit is huge. It would make a lot more sense if that starting pool was used in the design budget for each playbook.

It's probably my fault.

Grey One: Kayvan "Pops" Carrington

Pops was always a small town boy, a training officer in the Imperial garrison on Caerleon. He'd been a few places, seen a few things, fried a few bugs here and there, but something kept calling him home. There were always offers to go off and serve Empire and Emperor, but he felt he owed it to the young idealists to make sure they had the skills and the sense not to suck void in some forsaken corner of wherever the Empire was lumbering about this decade. As time went on, he noticed these wet-behind-the-ears kids were getting younger and younger, with fewer and fewer of them returning to pay ol' Pops a visit. The Rebellion was always a distant threat to him - they all are, before they wind up on your doorstep. Receiving a message from an old colleague, however, reminded him of just how close that threat really was. Fiery Forney was one of his best students, and hearing that he had joined with this Alliance to Restore the Republic did much to show an old man some new things. Like it or not, something was coming, and the old man just couldn't stand to send more kids to the meat grinder.

Where the **** did you get that picture?! I'll--give it here, you--!

Y'know, I never thought I'd be called back into action after that ******* Spinward Shipyards raid went over like a ton of durasteel into a black hole. Only survivors of that mess were me and Pazaak--and Pazaak's been stuck in a coma in a bacta tank for the past year and a half. Guess that makes him lucky compared to everybody else. As for me, I've stuck myself in the galaxy's largest cup of juma juice for the past year and a half and I hadn't planned on climbing out anytime soon--well, juma and anything else strong and sleepy that you've got. You've got anything else on you?

Yeah, you've gotta be really ******* desperate for bodies if you're coming to me. Can't fit a decent droid intelligence in an X-Wing's cockpit anymore? Hey, now, didn't say I wasn't interested. That picture you've got...heh...Pazaak was such a ******* lively *******...wouldn't know he was a hardened combat pilot from the way he talked. And I guess he wouldn't want me down and out in juma juice the way he's down and out in bacta, right? Heh. I guess there's always room for one more--in a squadron, a ship, a medbay, or Hell.

When your Grey is +2, you get kicked out of the squadron by higher ups. Make a new character.

Formation
The Pegasus Knights were once one of the Rebel Alliance's premier starfighter squadrons in the sector. Nobody knew what the **** a Pegasus was, but that didn't stop us from painting what we thought they were all over the wings of our ships. We crashed Empire convoys and stations all over the star map. We thought the Spinward Shipyards raid would be another easy pick-up--nobody told us that half the ships under construction there had active weapons and that we'd arrived just in time for some kind of Imperial sector-wide fleet review. We pretty much hyperspaced out right into their guns. They actually gave me a ******* medal for retrieving Pazaak's life-pod in that fiasco, like that made up for taking the rest of the Pegasus Knights to their deaths. Nowadays the only person I can talk to about it isn't talking back anytime soon, and people ask me what the hell kind of creature is on my flight jacket. Memories are thin on the ground here. Grey Two - HK-32 "Rusty"

Expository Monologue: It seems I have been deactivated - or more accurately, disassembled - for well over a thousand years. Fortunately for me, some meatbag had the bright idea of putting me together again, cobbling some inferior modern parts together with my original chassis to create the figure you see before you now. Not only a mere shadow of what I once was, but much of my original programming has been compromised. Delightfully, my insatiable bloodlust is quite intact, and I am told that there is an Empire in existence now. Perhaps it is just the eccentricity that develops when a droid goes without routine memory wipes - the same sort that leads one to become a pilot - but an Empire seems just the thing to assassinate in order to showcase my return to the galaxy.

Moves
The Black Mark - You did something very bad in the past, something you didn't really want to do, but you did anyway. This experience led to a mastery of a specific talent. Carry +2 forward into any roll of a specific type that uses that talent: Homicidal arson - Demolitions - clash with. When you use this talent to overcome a major obstacle in the squadron’s way, build a Link with somebody that witnessed you doing it.

Hard to Keep Down - When you spend a Link to lose a Condition somebody gave you, lose all Conditions you have and break all remaining Links with that person.

Apex
When you have at least 2 Links with every other pilot, enter your Apex.

You’ve finally overcome that black mark, your fellow pilots finally trust you. Decide whether you trust them back. If you do, +1 White, -1 Grey. If you don’t, +1 Blue, -1 Red. Then break a Link with everybody.

When your White is +2, become The Dad. Reset your Colors but keep all your moves.

When your Blue is +2, become The Mole. Reset your Colors but keep all your moves.

Formation
Expository Monologue: I am not at all surprised that the meatbag to reassemble me after so many dormant years would be in the employ of a Hutt. I was very much surprised, however, to learn said meatbag thought he knew better than the factory that originally assembled me, replacing my wide-ranging assassination protocols with a much more focused, brutish skillset. The meatbag claimed it would be better for "sending a message" to blow up an entire building in order to kill one target. The meatbag did not understand the subtleties of terror. Still, I can appreciate the beauty of black smoke emerging from an orange fireball, rising up and reflecting in my own rust-colored chassis. It was almost enough to make me spare the meatbag's life.

Waru: Wow, you're quite the fighter? Have you... ever killed somebody with your bare hands? And as far as flying... well, you test just fine with your prosthetics... so I guess that works. What's your biggest fear when you get behind the cockpit? What's your biggest fear about joining a squadron?

Damaya Culu: So you know about the Force... and you can use it?! Wow, that's, well, I mean... how exactly strong are you in the Force? And what kind of training have you had? And... why the hell did you become a fighter pilot?

Calum Vessery: You really want to fly against your brother? Do you think you really have a chance to beat him? Do you really think you could even pull the trigger? And... what do you think about this posting? Isn't it a little... pedestrian for you? Aren't you better than this?

Kayvan Carrington: A former Imperial trainer, eh? Looks like Forney likes you, I guess you can't be all that bad. But what about those that you trained... do you ever worry about running into them now, now that you're on the other side? Could you really fire off a salvo at somebody you taught how to fly? And... how would you feel if you hesitated, and it resulted in you losing one of your fellow pilots? Jeez... I don't envy you, not one bit.

Neme Stardancer: A juma junkie, eh? Surprised you even got out of bed. Though, I guess that does show a level of dedication to the cause. Still... lots here in your file to go over. What was your former squadron called, and who from it that died to you think of the most? Have you ever been confronted by the loved ones of those you led into that hellhole? And... do you really think you have enough in you to keep it together?

HK-32: CirclMastr - you took an extra Move. Well... this is interesting. Sorry, I mean... well, you're an assassination droid... applying to be a pilot? How on- What in- You know what, I don't really even care. Says here you're good with explosives... let's just leave it at that. What do you want to blow up most? What do you want to blow up the least? Do you want to blow something up right now?

Hey, there's a reason they give droids memory wipes. Besides, you can only do so much damage with personnel-level weaponry.

What do you want to blow up most?

Internal Debate: Blowing up Coruscant's star would probably wipe out the seat of the Empire and most everything else in the system. But on the other hand, there's a lot to be said for blowing up the planet itself. More direct, more visceral...

What do you want to blow up the least?

Condescending Answer: Myself, obviously. And probably whoever that "you are in love with someone" Link gets attached to. I don't envy that person, though.

"Well, uh, 'use' is kind of a strong word for what I do," says Damaya. She flips up her goggles, revealing skin where eyes would be on a human. "We evolved to see things through the impression they leave in the force. It's a little different for everyone, but for me people just look colorful. Machines and the like look normal, I guess? I'm not sure I have a lot of frame of reference for what you'd call normal."

Damaya flips her goggles back into place and continues. "I can't do anything else, really. You've heard the stories of the Jedi, right? Don't expect me to throw anything around or read minds or anything. There was an order of force users on my homeworld, the Luka Sene. They could do some of those things -- or at least people said they could." She stops, thinking for a moment. "Well, my instincts are really good. That's probably not related, but I guess it's notable?"

Damaya sighs, "As for why I enlisted, well, you don't see a lot of people like me around any more. The Empire made sure of that when they purged our home world. I wasn't there, of course, but it's still not a good time to be a Miraluka in Empire space. My only real shot, other than running to the Rim, was to sign up with the Alliance. I took the standard battery of aptitude tests when I went through training and my piloting scores were great. I'm ready to strike back for a change, sir. I'm done running."

Hahaha, of course I have! You don't think I joined this rebellion of yours to play Sabacc, do you?
I will admit that one of my biggest fears is that somehow, whatever the Empire did to me is only temporary. That I'll be flying one day and suddenly forget how to speak basic, or lose my understanding of tactics or high speed astronautics. My condition is no doubt a curse, but it's a curse I've come to depend on. I enjoy being unique, but if you ever tell that to anyone, no power in the galaxy will save you from my wrath.

I fear joining a squadron because every unit I've been a part of there's the people who assume I'm just a primitive, lower than a mynock, or who think I'm just a cute fluff that can't hold my own, or that I'm some kind of joke being played on them. In times like this I wait in patience and silence, like a hunter. Once they see me in action the jokes tend to stop. I never do get invited to their parties though.

"Pops"
"Y'know, you eventually reach a point where you just don't think about it. Let the kids get all hot-blooded and worked up over their kill-counts or their Ace of Aces or whatever they do these days - at the end of it all, the Empire makes everyone faceless. Sure, there's some leeway - a marking here, a maneuver there, but the Imperial Navy is so vast that you reach probabilistic measurements. I've seen so many come and go that it's both inevitable and unlikely that I'd face one of 'em. Not that I trained 'em to care - if someone's shooting at you, you shoot back. Period. You take care of your own. Period. I'll be happy to sit and chat with any of 'em, but even in the sims, you can't afford those quandaries. War is hell, and if they didn't know that going into it, I made drat sure they knew going out there. It won't be a problem, Sir."

Haha, definitely. I imagine the actual flying bits going great, more or less, but a lot of the pre-flight directions and training just being delivered in a human-centric way that made very little sense to her.

"My brother is a goddamn bootlicker and he knows what's coming to him. He just follows orders like a good little boy and tells his superior what they want to hear. He's never acknowledged my skill, and that little accident we had off Eisar VII proved to me that he would be more than willing to report me to the ISB if it helped his career. I don't just want to fly against him: I NEED to fly against him and bring down people like him that are infesting our galaxy. And hell yeah I could beat him: I know all of his tricks, and I've always been the better pilot, and he knows it. And when I finally get him in my sights, there won't be any hesitation."

I guess that little stunt I pulled in order to escape the Empire wasn't enough. What more do I need to show you I'm not some double agent? And I thought the Imperial Navy was rife with paranoia..."

Look, I knew the kid always had some skill, but that sibling rivalry bullshit is precisely why I kept him down a peg. Looks like he never outgrew it, and has excelled in spite of it. Tell me, kid - do you still have that little twitch when you go for a yaw inversion? Figured a crack pilot like yourself could handle the Gs.

Rivalry link with Pops? Sure! I'll reciprocate with the one about a green pilot under his wing - that ought to stoke that rivalry, if it's acceptable!

That would certainly make sense. Though, if I'm understanding this correctly we'd end up with two links specifically exploring that one dynamic. I was also thinking of framing mine as "You remind Pops of his daughter" for something non-romantic if Rhyos is game.

For the other link, who hates the Force the most? Neme?

Loss of a Holo Star

Reist Windhunter had been a star of the Sun Jammer races,
a difficult and archaic sport long outlawed in the republic, but has a thriving
business in the Hult space. Reist Windhunter was one of the best, but
betting against was too profitable. So it came that an "accident" was
orchestrated to let Reist win the race. Sadly, that involved the death of
two other racers and perhaps the end of any chance of a career...

But all was not lost, as the former jockey tried to escape to the outer rim
away from the fans, away from the law. It was something that he could
at least make his way in the world, the Galactic Civil War had other
plans...

Musical Accompaniment

Reist was in a trashy bar in the edge of the galaxy drinking his pain away, as he mostly did. He was now a merc, though not his choice, he had hoped to get with some security company, but everyone checked his background and said no. After all, as a merc at least he got to fly, and most of the time it was a lot of boredom. The thing is he knew that he was a good flyer, and a drat good shot, the main problem was to drink himself into a stupor after each mission. That is what happened every single job, and it was killing him. He saw it as retribution from the Force on to his sorry rear end for surviving.

He stared into his drink and thought about life, and death and well how his sorry rear end got in this mess. The normal when a familiar face stepped in front of him.

"Well By the Core, if it isn't General Sullivan aren't you supposed to be arresting me. Haven't seen you since my last dive." He said with a wobbling gaunt, trying to either make a move for a blaster, or perhaps a way out of the bar. The General hissed and grabbed his arm with a great jerk and managed to swing Riest to his feet. "Now don't you normally got an escort?" He asked drunkenly.

"No you piece of Bantha dung, I left with most of the militia a bit ago and went to ground. Haven't you heard about the Rebellion." The General said with the seriousness that Reist didn't respond too. "I'm in enough trouble with imperials thank you every much, I will just take my leave." Reist shot back and tried to wiggle loose.

"You want to drink yourself blind every night and fly that hacked up cargo hauler you call a star fighter feel free, but I came cause I need your help." The General said letting him go, Reist wobbled on his feet but didn't fall. "My help? What the hell you need my help, I was just another Sun Jammer Jockey with a good agent." He said dusting off the front of his smock.

"Need someone with some contacts in Hutt Space, or at least knowledge of it, you seem like the man for the job. We don't have resources, or well anything, but drat, at least you could give something back." He said to Holo Jockey, "At least we are going to get you a decent ship."

"Deal, you cover my rear end and get me a ship and I'll fly for you." Reist started to stagger toward the exit only to be helped by the General.

Possibly? But also, most playbooks change too, so players should be at different "stages" of the playbook. Will be interesting to see!

One thing I could experiment with is "intro" playbooks leading into "advanced" playbooks that branch from the intro, but don't cross over. Could work? Will think on it.
