Yes!
I finally understand everything there is to know about axes!
Game Thread

Several years ago a terrible darkness threatened our world. Many people never knew the danger, about how close we came to being overrun by the forces of evil. It was only through the efforts of a band of heroic and valiant individuals that this terrible fate was averted. Their deeds dun and their tales spun, the group parted ways as each returned to their old lives or began new ones.

Two of the adventurers in the Band of the Shining Shield were the dwarven magician, Mervahn Haarthford and the lady Ashe Brightheart, warrior and master of the blade.

Like their companions, Ashe and Haarthford accumulated vast wealth through their adventures. Far more wealth than they could hope to spend in their lives, even if they built splendid palaces and lived only the greatest lives of luxury. So they decided to spend their riches on buying some land and building a place for a new generation of adventurers, and maybe heroes, could train and learn in safety. They would call upon some of their companions from time to time to aid in lessons, although some were more reclusive than they...and one or two even not necessarily even wishing to meet their old companions in arms. Once the basics of their academy was built they sent out flyers across the country and messages to other nations, calling for new recruits. While many wished to spend time with their heroes, it soon became clear that many of their aspiring pupils did not have the necessary dedication or skills to be accepted.

But there were some gems in the rough, and a shortlist was made. They would take just 4-6 pupils in their first class, and they invited those that had made it to an interview where they could learn more about the school and its teachers.

All right, please make sure that you fill out the following forms correctly. Write legibly, I hate having to use magic to read something because people forgot to cross their r's and l's.
Mervahn, you know I don't read dwarven. We don't cross an l in Tenarian, and it's arguable whether you should cross an r or not.
Pft. Fine. We'll have it your way in your boring and inelegant Tenarian. Just please make sure you fill out this form, and if you are not sure how to write Tenarian well...we can dictate for today, and I guess that would make for a good lesson. Being able to read is important, and a skill a lot of human never get a chance to learn.
Don't worry about being too precise, we just need a good idea of what you can really do. If you have any tricks or talents, write those down as well. Even the oddest trick can come in handy when you least expect it.
Like Tamare's cheese making.

The Game

For posting expect to see an update once a day, and occasionally once every two days if I am particularly tired. Anything extra is a bonus, but that is my intended base level of updating.

The game is not going to be about grand adventure and deeds sung in song. The PCs are going to be fresh to adventuring, and maybe young as well, but definitely in a position where they will be learning. Much of what happens will be around the local area of the school, but maybe later on there may be excursions to more distant and exotic locations...and also possibly with some danger. I am not interested in particularly tortured or dark characters. It's okay to have a character with something in their past that they don't like to talk about, but I am also not likely to be interested in Damiel, fifth son of the Demon Lord Pesarroth who most constantly fight against his infernal heritage lest he unleash burning agony and death to innocents around him. The game is in general meant to be a little light-hearted and definitely fun, so try to take that into consideration. Mervahn and Ashe are not psychologists and councillors after all.

I am going to use the standard FATE system as a base, but I will add or modify things as needed. While the base of the game will be a fantasy theme, I am deliberately leaving a lot of the details of the world and its story blank to be filled in later and to give players a chance to define it themselves. Feel free to invent your own race or religions, my only rules are if you want to make something different you need to be prepared to keep working with me to describe it and build on it. The other rule is of course, not to be offensive or needlessly dark or depressing.

If you need to ask questions or get in contact with me, I have PMs, you can ask in the thread or you can find me in #Persona which I am coopting from PixelScum to offload a bunch of work as people there know about FATE and can help answer questions about it. I will try to answer any questions fielded to me, but I cannot always respond to questions quickly at work. Because I live in Australia there is a decent chance I will be working for most of the afternoon and evening for people if you live in America.

Character Creation

I am more interested in concept than with nit picking details, which can easily be sorted out in actual play at the start before things get too busy. The best advice I can give you is that your high concept should involve some kind of indication you are new to adventuring or a student. Your character does not need to be young, but you should not already be very skilled at the blade, or know a lot of magic. Don't worry about making that reflect in your skills, we will handle progression through the narrative, and a high skill for your character could indicate a lot of talent or innate potential.

If you need a reference or do not own any of the FATE books you can look at the free SRD here. You only need the FATE CORE section for character creation. Drive can also be used for Ride, so feel free to substitute it unless your person was a cart driver and that is a particularly noteworthy of their skills and character.

For those that want to use magic, I would suggest considering using stunts to represent some specific talents or spells your character knows. Otherwise if you really want to have a more fleshed out magic based character and I like the concept, I will work something out with you. But I would advise anyone to strongly consider whether magic is important to their concept first before trying to look into it. It does mean we, and mostly I, have to sit down and figure out how the mechanics for it will be handled.

I will add further notes here as they come up and are relevant.

You're fucking subhuman

Alexis Heidrich

Several generations ago the Heidrichs were rich, influential, and powerful. They seemed to have just about anything they wanted and looked like they were going to keep moving up in the world. But...it turns out they got there because of the deals they made with demons. Nothing was enough for them. Eventually they went too far and got caught. Almost overnight, they lost everything and were banished out of the kingdom. Their pacts and powers could not save them now. But that doesn't mean they gave up.

They continued their delve into the dark arts, desperate to get back their former glory. Which is where I was supposed to come in. See, I have the blood of demons flowing through me. The idea my family had was that I would be the beginning of a new era for the Heidrichs. But I never was supportive of that. And so when they inevitably were found out and driven away from where they had set up by Sir Reinhold Bischoffs, I went with him. He's a good man. He raised me from that day on, giving me an education and a much better life.

So why am I here? Well, Sir Reinhold is still out there doing his job of protecting those who need it. But he's getting older. Eventually he'll need to retire. And taking up his mantle is what I want to do. He has a high opinion of you two and wants me to study here as I learn the trade, along with controlling the strength I have inherited. Sorry about the door by the way. Despite where it came from, I can assure you I am not a danger to those around me. The risks of it are more in how my family may either want to bring me back or kill me, but I don't really keep myself up at night worrying about them. If I am to be honest, full blooded demons wanting me might be more of a concern. If you don't want that risk I understand, and will go my own way. Not everyone can detect my lineage, but that has caused some trouble for me in the past.

In the end though I don't mind it. I will give my aid and protection to any who need it, regardless of what they think.

High Concept: Knight in Training
Trouble: Demonic Heritage
Aspect: I Serve The Common People
Aspect: Don't Know My Own Strength
Aspect: Raised by Reinhold Bischoffs

+4: Fight
+3: Physique, Will
+2: Athletics, Contacts, Notice
+1: Empathy, Investigate, Lore, Rapport

Physical OOOO
Mental OOOO

Stunts

Tough as Nails: Once per session, at the cost of a fate point, you can reduce the severity of a moderate consequence that’s physical in nature to a mild consequence (if your mild consequence slot is free), or erase a mild consequence altogether.

Danger Sense: You have an almost preternatural capacity for detecting danger. Your Notice skill works unimpeded by conditions like total concealment, darkness, or other sensory impairments in situations where someone or something intends to harm you.

Lie Whisperer: +2 to all Empathy rolls made to discern or discover lies, whether they’re directed at you or someone else.

Sharona Voorhallen

My name is Sharona Voorhallen, daughter of Steilia Kraggston, daughter of Theoric Kraggston, son of Lena Orehallow, daughter of Tara Haarthford. I can keep going, tracing the heroic lineages. I can also recite their deeds. In Old Dwarvish, if required. I'm almost as good in the forge as my father, and mother's been teaching me poetry as best she can on her own.

The letter from mother told you that her daughter would be coming to your school. You know that every good war poet needs to go on a dvarfvander before they can claim to be more than an amateur!

I don't see why you're so shocked when it was me. Is it the horns? It's the horns, isn't it.

Well too bad! No law says a dwarf girl can't have horns!

Anyway. If you must know, I'm adopted. My...birth parents were ogres. But I'm a dwarf! I've done all the proper coming of age rituals and all. I even won the wrestling competition, and that wasn't easy! Mayria Kars was really good at it, you know? I made sure to practice a long time for all that, so I'd be able to prove to everyone I'd mastered all the traditions. I...um, I'm not actually good at magic, really, besides the basic recitations, so that bit I still need some training in. Can't be a proper war poet unless you master all the traditional arts, and all that. But I've been training my voice so I can do the declaiming!

So yeah, that's...that's why I'm here. I'm on my dvarfvander to prove my mastery and become a war poet. Very traditional. I'm a very traditional girl.

High Concept: Dwarven War Poet In Training
Trouble: Adopted Ogre
Aspect: Traditional Dwarvish Arts
Aspect: Traditional Ogrish Temper
Aspect: Accidental Delinquent

+4: Provoke
+3: Physique, Crafts
+2: Fight, Lore, Athletics
+1: Rapport, Will, Notice, Empathy

Stress
Physical: OOOO
Mental: OOO

Consequences
Minor, Moderate, Severe

Stunts
Dwarvish War Poem: You may use Provoke to overcome physical obstacles by bragging about skills or insulting the obstacle.
The True War Poem: When you overcome an obstacle in battle using Provoke, you may create a situation aspect that describes how the poem alters the world for you and stick a free invocation on it.
I Look Amazing: You can use Physique to defend against Provoke attacks that involve insulting your appearance, though you always take 1 shift of stress on a tie.

Clara Braun
"Well gosh, why do I want to apply here? Wellllll my mom said that I need a "healthy outlet for my energy" and that if I set off another explosion in the house she'd "turn me into a tree". So that explains that! I mean, she should be proud of me! I took all that herbology knowledge she imbued into those druidic memory stones, and improved upon it! Why settle for a healing poultice, when with a little crushed up sodium added to the herbs, and boiled until it bubbles, you get a healing potion! (I mean, it does turn acidic if you boil it too long, but...that's why I use glass beakers!) Based on the school tour, the place seems really sturdy...I mean well equipped! And the students seem like perfect guinea-I mean allies! I'm looking forward to move-in day! :D"

High Concept: Enthusiastic Novice Alchemist
Trouble: Hmmm,That ~Shouldn't~ Be Able To Explode
General: Latchkey Adventurer's Kid
General: ABE (Always Be Experimenting)
General: I've Got a Potion for This Exact Situation!

Skills

+4:Investigate
+3:Deceive, Rapport
+2:Alchemy, Lore, Will
+1: Athletics,Stealth, Ride, Provoke

Stunts

Unstable Concoctions: Gain a +2 bonus to attack using Alchemy, when said attack involves a potion Clara herself has made.

Druid's Child: Gain a +2 bonus to all Lore rolls relating to herbology.

Here, Drink This!: You can use Alchemy to create skill-boosting potions, provided the recipient is willing to drink the concotion, and you are willing to spend a fate point.

Yes!
I finally understand everything there is to know about axes!
Once per session, that means a training session right?
That would make sense.
We had planned to do lessons and training during the week, then at the end of the week do a practical exam of some sort.
So training session would actually be these practical examinations.
Well they are less an exam and more an exercise that ties into the previous lessons, but yes you're right again.

Lucia Ashfear

So you want to be a paladin...that's sort of like you Ashe.
I don't wield any power though, Sarasa just recognised my skill and integrity and gave me authority to fight in her name.
Isn't that the same thing?
No, Mervahn, it is very different.
So Lucia, if you want to be a paladin do you have any faith that you follow? Or are you still searching for the right cause?

So you wrote here that you have used your empathy to attack people to try and get them to talk things out?
Talking is more Ashe's thing than mine but I can't think of a situation where attacking someone made them more likely to attack.
That is true. I would suggest that you consider a different way to try to encourage your foes to engage in diplomacy.
There is more to adventuring than fighting, and we will have lots of lessons where you will need to try and solve problems without fighting.
If you've only got one trick you're more likely to find your foes learning it.
So tell us a bit about yourself, where you come from and why you want to become an adventurer.

Alexis Heidrich

A knight, now this is similar to me Mervahn.
Although I may not live in the capital, I am still bound by my oath to serve the queen.
Why do you want to become a knight?
Does it relate to your...parentage at all?
This danger sense you speak of is a handy trick, but we will need to figure out a way to deprive you of it sometimes.
Eventually something, or someone, will catch you by surprise and you need to be able to react under pressure when you are caught unaware.
Knights often stay close to their charges and their patrons.
Becoming an adventuring knight might be difficult, unless you are called to duty like Ashe.
Not all knights are necessarily the same, Mervahn.
Sometimes their oaths are different, especially if they are not from Tenar

Sharona

...
Uh, Mervahn?
Sorry, just a little surprised.
You don't normally see war poets in training away from the old schools.
It's not the?
Of course not. What do you take me for, Ashe?
Do war poets normally do magic? Is that common for poetry?
Of course not, not for your mundane human poetry.
Dwarven poetry is different and much more interesting.
But how about we let the student tell us about the tradition a bit more?
(Oh dear, I had better make sure to warn the neighbours. They were expecting...well...someone 'normal' and not a 'monster'.
I can see smoothing things over is going to be a headache already)

Intrik

Sponsored by a hero? I wonder if we know them...
We don't know every hero and adventurer in the realms, Ashe.
I know more than you considering you keep forgetting them.
I have them all written down somewhere.

Hmm, we can teach some of the parts of...well, thieving but at least we have a friend to ask for help on specialist matters.
Just remember that our rooms and belongings are out of bounds.
Some of Mervahn's traps and wards may be unpleasant.
But loads of fun! Well not for you.
Your skills and talents look good but I really need to know more about you as a person.

Testing my knowledge, huh? I can take it!

Now, humans haven't really been told the truth of the world. But the truth of the world is known to us dwarves, because we found it deep in the earth, where it was born. It wasn't gods that made it or anything - the gods came later. See, first it was just the Word. The Word was not a god or a creator - it just was. It was the Word, and it spoke itself, and the word was 'Birth.' And that is how the world was made, and the gods were born, in an egg of stone at the heart of the world. The egg hatched, and many things came forward, because the Word spoke one word.

That wasn't the only time the Word spoke. We know this because we found the impressions of the Word, echoing within the caverns. The Word is still there, and if it speaks again...well, that's not important here.

The important thing is that this shows you, words are important. Words are really important. The world is born from words. And we dwarves learned that first! There's an immense amount of poetry recording the history that we built from that knowledge. But the important one is Rogan Hymond, the first of the War Poets. He witnessed a speaking of the Word, and it changed him. He realized that the world could be changed by the Word, and like any proper dwarf, he knew that if he tried hard enough and smart enough, he could do anything.

So he decided he'd do that, too.

And that's why we dwarves have a reputation for confidence! To change the world with your words, you can't have any doubt. The magic is powered by your will and, more importantly, your confidence. That's because when a War Poet declaims, their words are always true. A war poem can never be anything but true when it's spoken. That's what Rogan discovered. Now, entire books could be written about his adventures, and have been, so I'll leave them out.

What's important is that I'm not saying war poets can't lie. I'm saying war poems are true. If they aren't true when you start saying them, they become true, even for just a little. As long as you do it right. But you need to have total confidence in what you're saying to do the magic. The Word never doubts, and doubt destroys a war poem's power. That's why war poetry is mostly bragging and insults. It's a lot easier to believe - they're called the recitations, and they're the simplest form of war poetry, the kind that every war poet learns first. Traditionally they are declaimed powerfully and loudly, to assert your confidence. Ever since the days of Rogan, dwarven war poets have taken to the battlefield to proclaim dwarven triumph and ensure our foes know they can't ever win. Even if our foes are clouds, mountains or oceans. The greatest war poets can do even more than the recitations - they can create poems that sway the hearts and minds of entire nations, though usually those aren't magical. Just, every dwarf respects poetry and words.

Some war poets are said to be able to command the minds and bodies of their foes, though, and others have tongues so vicious they can burn people with their words...literally. The greatest magic, however, is when they make prophesies. Prophetic war poetry is extremely difficult, even for the best poets. A prophecy cannot be phrased simply and cleanly, after all. The power to weld truth to the world on that level requires allegory and metaphor even more than normal war poetry.

I'm only able to perform recitations right now. But still, I'm good at that! I'm very confident and I can keep meter well. And none of that 'I'm this person here and I'm here to say' stuff. That's just bad.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll find a home.

Leon Morrell

Hailing from the prosperous trade city of Redmark, Leon is the second son of a minor merchant family. Though regarded as a bright child growing up, Leon was easily bored and often ditched his tutors to instead run around with other delinquents and street urchins, much to the chagrin of his parents. Though not at the level of a proper gang, the band of children were still quite the troublemakers in Redmark. With his easy attitude and silver tongue, Leon more often than not would be the one leading his friends on whatever havoc they were intent on causing that day.

To the continued despair of his parents, their son would keep up his antics as he grew older, pickpocketing from fat merchants, filching sweets from vendors and tossing pebbles at the heads of unsuspecting guardsmen. Leon's friendly charm was enough to keep him out of any real trouble with the authorities, but things were not to last. After an unfortunate incident involving a herd of cows, the mayor's daughter, an anchor and the town clock tower, Leon found it best if perhaps he spent some time away from Redmark.

The invitation to join Haarthford & Ashe's School for Adventuring was most propitious for the young man, and also came as complete surprise. It seemed like in a desperate attempt to hammer some sort of discipline and respectability into their wayward son, his parents had applied for him in his stead to the recently established school.

Leon himself was actually quite excited upon hearing the news. Hammered well into him the value of money by his merchant family and much poorer friends, and lacking any real desire to follow in his parent's footsteps, the idea of becoming an adventurer was a much more appealing option to him. Treasure, excitement and glory was sure to come, right?

Comrade Gorbash
Jul 12, 2011

My paper soldiers form a wall, five paces thick and twice as tall.
Rin

The eldest daughter of a Great House, Rin’s destiny seemed restricted to being little more than a pretty bird in a gilded cage, coddled and sheltered. Taught how to sing and perform, to one day win the Coral Throne with her talent, so her sisters could rule. A life dominated by appearances and ritual, nothing more than a celebrated figurehead without real responsibilities. Adored, but never relied upon.

It was made all the worse by the stories she was raised on, of adventures of fabled lost cities and hidden treasures. The little moments of something actually interesting, the physical training - swordplay, climbing, running, gymnastics - all excused as a necessary evil to make her performances as thrilling as possible. Magical instruction, to make her songs more enthralling and add some visual flair. Hours of classes, so she'd never miss a step, and so she would always have at least one interesting to say to any guest or dignitary (two things would be excessive). All of that was what she enjoyed. Well - she did enjoy singing and dancing, sure, but on her own terms.

Rin hated it. She hated all the bowing and scraping, she hated being useless. She hated that no one would let her do anything besides practice her arts. She hated that they wouldn’t argue with her either, just agree condescendingly until she gave up. She hated that someone would be out of breath from just saying her name. She hated not being to do anything with any risk. She hated not being able to have a conversation that extended beyond cliches and a couple clever statements. She hated that her whole life was mapped out for her, without any input from her.

So Rin made a choice of her own: she ran away.

She's looking for the kind of adventure from the stories. And, as it turns out, all those lessons weren't totally a waste. Rin certainly can't handle any kind of normal trade - she can barely keep herself fed and clothed properly without servants. But her songs have magic in them. She's acrobatic and fit. She can fence, even if her style favors flash over substance. She's clever with her hands. Her head is full of random facts on all sorts of topics.

Rin may not be particularly good at any one thing, but she can do a bit of everything. And she's enthusiastic as its possible to be. If she can keep from getting dragged back to the elven kingdom, she might actually be able to put her talents to good use.

Yes!
I finally understand everything there is to know about axes!
This post will be OOC to give more direct feedback and be easier to read.

1. The recruit will close this Saturday. While I won't disregard anyone posting right near the deadline, you'll probably want to have a very good character. If you're thinking you want to join, post what you have now and work on it. You can always ask me or others for some help.

2. I've put a few notes in the first post about the setting theme, since there were a few questions about if characters would be appropriate or not.

3. I have not mentioned it yet, but for characters who aren't wealthy and can't pay up front the school will let you tithe earnings from adventuring once you graduate until you pay off your debt. The school itself donates mostly to churches and to helping those in need (Ashe's influence) so the tithe can go to a church or to a charity. The contract is magically enforced and not to be entered into lightly.
This won't affect anyone in play but might be relevant to backstories or moments in play.

4. MollyMetroid's character is using the Witchery skill, a magical talent that can be used to Defend and to Create and Advantage. The actual magic uses a combination of jinxes and hexes, as well as beneficial charms that help luck. If anyone else wants to take it they may use it as well.

I'll double check stress tracks later.

Lucia Ashfear:

Your backstory looks good, although my one comment would be is why does Lucia want to be an adventurer specifically? The school is for adventurers, not so much for just general training to allow people to go on to specialised careers. Necromancers are often adversaries of adventurers, although there can be good necromancers, so Lucia may have to confront the idea that she needs to fight people she might have known growing up or even one day face her parents.

Lucia is likely to do well in training and in some of the practical tests, but might have some difficulty with interacting with the average people that live around the school. I can't see any problems or errors with the sheet, the only note being you are combat/martial focused which sets up interesting weaknesses.

Alexis Heidrich:

Is Sir Reinhold an adventurer, or some kind of knight or paladin in service of a church or order? Like Lucia I just want to get a more specific idea of why Alexis wants to be an adventurer, although I can fill in some of the blanks from your backstory. This is just getting it clearly spelled out so that I don't assume anything and get a different idea to you.

Also would Sir Reinhold be a contemporary, or even past companion of the Band of the Shining Shield? It's not necessary and won't change much but is an option and would be useful for me to know.

You have selected only 3 out of your 4 +1 skills, so you should pick another to add in.

While I would try to make sure it comes up sometimes, you may feel that your demonology specialisation Stunt will be under-used. If this concerns you and you want to change it, I might suggest a stunt that can be used out of combat or physical activity because you may feel frustrated at times. The game will have a balance between practical school life and training, as well as out of hours hijinks and interactions with average people. Just something to keep in mind.

Sharona Voorhallen

I've got a very strong idea of the character and their motivations. While you have not explicitly said why Sharona wants to be an adventurer, bards (or in your case poets) often travel seeking new stories and inspiration so that's not too hard to figure out.

I'm not going to bother making a specific Crafts skill for various things, but out of curiosity is there something that Sharona specialises in or is particularly good at making?

Intrik Nameseeker

Fill out your intro text! Tell me about yourself, and why you want to study at the school to become an adventurer.

Your sheet looks fine and I can't see any errors. I'll double check your Hard to Hit stunt again later, but I can't specifically see a problem with it; I just want to have a look at it again later when I have some time to go over it and the stunts creation more closely because I haven't seen a stunt like it before in games I've played.

Leon Morrell

Leon's backstory is fairly solid and gives me a good idea of motivations and personality.

Your aspect I keep my promises seems more like a Trouble to me than a standard aspect, although I don't see a reason why it couldn't be an aspect. Give me an example of how you would use it in three different ways so I can get an idea out of it. I just don't want to see it used in a catch all; 'I promised to do this thing so I'm going to invoke it for a Boost' all the time.

Five Minutes Friends is a bit vaguely worded and difficult to read, but it seems like it just reduces the difficulty on making someone friendly if you get enough time to talk to them?

The Amazing Ingmar

Okay, there are a few things to discuss here! But I think with a bit of work we can get a good fit for the game out of this. Silly is not necessarily bad though and I'm not disregarding your character out of hand but we do need to work through things.

Your intro text is certainly flavourful in terms of personality but does not really tell me a lot about your character. Why is he a con man, where did he come from, why does he want to be an adventurer, a career that is filled with a lot of very real deadly danger?

Your trouble, I'll play this role to the bitter end, is something I would have trouble using as an actual trouble. In contrast to Leon I think this would make a great aspect instead of your trouble. You could always swap it and your untrained magician (magic) aspect and make that as your trouble perhaps. That way Ingmar keeps accidentally doing real magic that blows up in his face. Just a thought, you are free to do what you want as long as you change the trouble to something I can work with easier.

Stunts; What is a small feat of actual magic? How do you define this and use it in a gameplay mechanic. Is it to overcome, create an advantage, attack, defend? Or is it something else. The flavour of the stunt is good but we need to more precisely codify what it actually does. FATE is broad with its rules but not quite that broad. Similarly, what does attracting attention do to you? Does it cause people to attack you? Make it harder for them to notice other stuff? Give me some ideas of how he uses it and we can work something out.

Generally I think your theme and concept are slightly off, but I think if you just change it so that your character uses his stage magic to cover the fact he keeps doing real magic and can't control it you'll get a more cohesive and compelling character concept for the game. Keep in mind that your character is signing up for a school for one of the most dangerous professions in the world.

Lunch break is over, sadly. I'll cover the last three current apps tonight or tomorrow when I get a chance.

In retrospect, it might be too awkward and kind of abusable with regards to invokes like you said, so I think I'll just make it a character trait for Leon. Would "One For All, All For One" work better as an aspect, to reflect Leon's devotion to his group and his desire for camaraderie?

I actually C/P'ed that from a list of Spirit of the Century stunts, which upon further inspection seems to have a bit more in-depth relationship/first impressions system. If that doesn't work, maybe "A Personal Connection: You can use Rapport instead of Empathy to learn the aspects of a target, as long as you've had the chance to talk to them for a few minutes"?

Ah, I didn't get that with the Kickstarter and it's not on the SRD! If you can give me an idea of what these first impressions and relationship rules are I can decide on it, but your revision is probably easier for me to work with otherwise.

Keep in mind a lot of these observations are first glance, looking over for 5-10 minutes impressions. If you disagree with any of my feedback let me know and we can discuss it! I don't want to be draconian, but I'd like to have stuff I feel comfortable with running and is still fun for my players. Explain the reasoning and where you got it for, and I might even learn something.

Solelelanibelle lais Kora'rageno y Lossorro

Your name is long and will definitely get shortened.

I might suggest Naive to This Country is changed to Naive to Foreign Lands? There is a chance to go to other places a few times and unless Sol is specifically naive to Tenar alone that makes more sense in general. But it's mostly a nitpick and would work fine as it is written.

Still waiting on your last stunt. Fireball! Is this to overcome or to attack? As it reads it sounds like an overcome action, although if it's specifically only when things are flammable it could do either action.

A little bit more background would be nice, what I've got is serviceable and gives me a good read on your character but it would be nice to hear a little more.

Tabetha

Where does Tabetha come from and what was home like, aside from insufferably unable to recognise her greatness?

Sheet checks out aside from the last Stunt needing to be finished, and your stress tracks. But we'd worked out a lot of stuff already anyway.

Rin

Strong character and background, I have a good idea of the kind of place she came from and why she is seeking to join the school.

Your stunts though are a bit different to the basic format which means I have to think about them a bit more.

Idol Facts I had a look around and read and thought about it. Mostly the automatically succeeding with style, means an automatic success on a lore check. Which ultimately I am okay with because it's once per scene, it's with lore and so there is a narrow enough focus and set of conditions that it is okay. Spellsong similar gave me pause, but ultimately I am okay with it right now because your two stunts are not going to cause any headaches with it if others use them. The Fate point cost on Jack of All Trades will still apply when giving it to someone else, however I would you to shoulder that cost instead of the other person.

There will be some stunts I would not allow you to transfer if it does not make sense. (For example if you had 4 arms and a stunt involved those, even though it's magic there will still be some limits to it).

You made me really think about stunt construction more than I had before, I've always tended to play it a lot safer in the past and so have the people I have played with.

Thanks for the feed back! To be honest I wasn't sure about any of the stunts, and figured they would need some tweaking. Mostly wanted to stake out some conceptual space.

That being said, I've done a little reworking already.

HiKaizer posted:

The more I reflected on it, the more I realized Spellsong had way too much potential to be broken in the worst way - that is, either completely overpowered or totally useless with no real way to tell which ahead of time. So I rewrote it to keep the support/buff flavor but make it more straightforward, consistent, and less potentially game breaking.

quote:

Spellsong: By singing, Rin can create an advantage with Rapport, placing the aspect Mystic Muse on an ally. When invoked by the ally, instead of the normal benefit the ally can use Rin's Jack of All Trades stunt. When invoked by Rin, instead of the normal benefit Rin can spend a fate point to grant the ally its benefits (either a +2 on a roll or a reroll).
The idea here is that it lets Rin share her Jack of All Trades stunt, though the fate point cost still applies when the ally uses it (so either they burn a free invoke and fate point or two fate points). Alternatively, Rin can spend her fate points on behalf of others, again at the cost of a free invoke or double fate point cost.

If it proves stronger than I think it is, lowering it to a regular success would probably bring it to heel.

Yeah, war poets just go out and adventure a lot, I imagine. Got to get inspired and learn a lot about the world.

As for crafting, she is a smith, but works mostly in gold and silver rather than iron or steel, given her choice. She is especially good at rings and torcs, the traditional jewelry of the dwarves. She is only decent at swords or armor.

Sartre the Golem

Once upon a time, there was an old druid living in the Endless Forest. His name was Guldor, and being quite old, he needed help doing his daily tasks, such as carrying herbs and repairing his treehouse and the like. To that end, he made some golems to assist him in these physical tasks. Obedient and deft workers but not much for conversation. Guldor talked at them anyway, as he was somewhat lonely and animals weren’t much for conversation. One day while gathering herbs, Guldor told his golems not to mix the Ataxia root with the Griffon’s claw, lest the two plants form a quote “deadly concoction unfit for consumption.” One golem asked what would happen if someone ate it, nearly giving Guldor a heart attack. Upon questioning the golem, Guldor had discovered it had somehow become self-aware. While not unheard of, golems becoming sapient was still exceedingly rare. Happy to have someone to talk to, Guldor named the golem Sartre.

Sartre was a dutiful golem but very curious and very excitable. And nothing got Sartre excited quite like the outside world. Sartre had seen every inch of the Endless Forest (turns out it wasn’t that endless) but the outside world was a relative mystery to him. They heard every story Guldor had of his adventuring days. Sartre hung on every word as Guldor described the Great Serpent of the Emerald Sea or the beautiful aurora that hangs over the frozen city Noremgard. As wanderlust took root in Sartre’s heart, they eventually asked Guldor if they could ever go on their own adventure.

Not wanting to disappoint Sartre but also reluctant to let the inexperienced Golem go for fear they would get hurt, Guldor was at an impasse. He stalled by putting Sartre through tests of strength and knowledge but the golem was built too strong and they were given a perfect memory so as to remember orders to the letter, which lent well to remembering cultural and historical facts Guldor had mentioned throughout his various stories and lessons. At the end of his rope, Guldor found a solution in a letter from an old adventuring friend of his. Apparently an apprentice of his had co-founded an adventuring school. So, calling in some favors (and spending an appreciable amount of gold, he would often grumble) Guldor was able to get Sartre enrolled in this school of adventuring.

Promising to write often, Sartre says goodbye to Guldor and takes their first steps out of the forest and into the world beyond. Nervous and excited, Sartre begins their own tale.

As I've mentioned, my views never really aligned with that of my family's. When I went to live with Sir Reinhold I soon found it was a way of life that just seemed innately...right, I suppose. He raised me with good morales and an intense but helpful daily exercise regiment. I honestly could not imagine myself refusing to take his place when the time is right.

While knights do often guard one place, Sir Reinhold and I are knights of a different type. While the powerful have many people dedicated to keeping them safe, who do the common people have? Often, no one. That's where I come in. I am bound not to a single person but to everyone. No matter who they are, no matter how hard it may be, no matter if they try to refuse my service - I will always give aid to those that need it.

Hmm...
So given you have had some issues with authority figures in the past, we should make a few things clear.
We are not here to enforce you to behave in a certain way.
Although we will certainly be attempting to encourage you to.
Right, but do be aware that there are certain things we won't tolerate.
You're an adult so I am sure you can figure most of it out.
However stealing from other students will get you expelled.
While stealing from us will likely get you killed, or injured.
I don't want to seem like we're threatening you, but some of the things we have are dangerous to the world.
We take protecting them very seriously.
But on a more pleasant note, let me ask you a question.
If you were to amass great wealth, what would you do with it?
It is of course acceptable to steal from monsters, cultists, bandits and rebels instead of people.
But everyone has their own reason for adventuring.
Wealth is a great motivator to be sure, but it's a means to an end.
What do you want to do with your wealth once you finish?

Solelelanibelle lais Kora'rageno y Lossorro

What sort of magic does she mean? Hopefully not more demon summoning...
No. Nothing as foolish as that.
Although perhaps as dangerous.
Her people are well known for their pyromancy and fire magics.
Oh...I see.
Well Mervahn I can at least leave that in your hands.
Indeed. Fire magic is good for an adventurer though.
It has a lot of uses and fire is a clean element.
Although there are some issues with aetherials and beings from the lower and upper realms.
Indeed. An elementalist always has to learn other elements if they plan to deal with more than simple bandits and orcnoids.
I must apologise, your name is long and difficult for those of us unaccustomed with your tongue.
Or anything save for Tenarian.
Yes. Quite, Mervahn.
Do you have a shorter nickname you would prefer us to call you by? Or could we give you a name to use here perhaps?
Some of the locals might get confused with your birth name unfortunately.
Is this your first time outside of your homelands?
Have you had any difficulties or troubles on your way here?

Tabetha

Ah a witch. A different branch of magic to mine in many respects.
Is that a problem?
Of course not. I know about all forms of magic.
Witchery is different to arcana because it is requesting the aid of spirits and fates.
Arcana directly commands and manipulates, so witchery is more about magical negotiation.
Oh I see. I had heard some people distrust witches.
That's because they don't understand it. People distrust mages and other magic practitioners as well.
Have you met a spirit or a fate before, Tabetha?
Is your familiar house trained?
Familiars can run the gamut of being barely more than a clever, albeit magical animal, to being smarter than a person.
Is that a problem for the Tomata?
Depends on how her familiar reacts to other magical beings, and simulated minds.

Rin

Do we need to be worried about someone coming to find you?
Not that you need to be worried.
We can keep out any unwanted guests if we need to.
Although we might want to keep this from the locals.
Do you have any servants or retainers with you?
We won't force them away if you do, but you will have trouble bringing them with you adventuring.
So we would want to teach you to be independent and to work without them.
Some people haven't seen an elf before.
What would you tell them about yourself?
Dealing with frightened farm hands is a bit different to making pleasantries with a courtier.
Being an adventurer is sadly not very glamorous.
Well except for when the stakes are the world itself.
Let us hope our students don't have to deal with the dangers we did.

Satre

Interesting...self-actualisation and identity are incredibly rare in Tomata.
Satre called itself a Golem.
Golems are an old word, and does not properly convey whether it is mechanical or magical in nature.
That's why you have magical Tomata, and mechanical Automata.
Oh that makes sense, I had always wondered why you seemed to leave part of the word off.
Satre, why do you want to be an adventurer?
There are many ways to see the world, and being an adventurer is dangerous.
Sometimes you will see things that are painful or will make you upset.
Not to mention people might assume you are a mindless servant.
People you learn to care for might be hurt, or die.
Adventuring is difficult and painful, so we want to make sure you are truly set and prepared for it.
And if you are set on joining our school, do you have a preferred way you wish to be addressed?
He, she, it, they, something else?

Tabetha

Of course I've met a spirit before. Lots of times! That doesn't mean they listen to me all the time, though. They don't really take me seriously any more than anyone else. I mean, even you don't take me seriously! Is Rennie house trained, you ask me. Rennie is very smart. He just only talks so I can hear it. I won't repeat what he said when you asked that. It was...pretty rude.

People don't seem to distrust me, anyway, so much as they just...don't really notice me, or talk down to me. One lady offered me a sweet for looking so cute in my witch costume! Um, I took it, because she was nice about it, but still!

Well, it's interesting. I didn't really even realize what I wanted was to be an adventurer at first. Hearing Guldor's stories about all the wondrous things out in the world made me want to travel but I never really thought about what I'd be doing. It wasn't until Guldor told me the story me this one story that I realized I wanted to be an adventurer. It was when he and his companions were traveling along the Granite Coast and they happened upon a suspiciously empty goblin fishing village. Apparently a wizard had hypnotized the villagers into working as laborers to build him a tower to do magic experiments. Guldor said the wizard probably picked the village because it was small and unknown, wasn't even on most maps. No-one would likely find him and he would have been able to work those goblins to death without so much as a fine. But Guldor and his pals sent that wizard packing and even helped the villagers get back on their feet, since the wizard had them neglecting their fishing to work on the tower.

That's why I wanted to be an adventurer. Helping those who would get overlooked by being the person who goes where few would dare or even consider going. I won't settle to be anything less.

Oh, and just use they for me, I never really bought into the whole "gender" thing.

Do we need to be worried about someone coming to find you?
Not that you need to be worried.
We can keep out any unwanted guests if we need to.
Although we might want to keep this from the locals.
My house will definitely send someone looking for me... but it won't be an attack, or a kidnapping attempt! I don't think so at least. It's not really their style? I mean, one of my sisters will probably try and guilt me into going back, things like that. But becoming queen is supposed to be voluntary, and besides it's really hard for someone to win the competition who doesn't want to be there, so.

HiKaizer posted:

Do you have any servants or retainers with you?
We won't force them away if you do, but you will have trouble bringing them with you adventuring.
So we would want to teach you to be independent and to work without them.
Uhm, I do have Kawa with me, that won't be a problem right? I mean I told her she didn't have to come with me but she insisted and I feel responsible for her! She doesn't want to go adventuring anyways, she just helps me with cooking and cleaning. I'm sure everyone will like her, she's very friendly and reliable! Unless people don't like halflings around here...?

Note: I couldn't pass up the chance to have another NPC, but I'm not aiming to avoid my trouble aspect by having a maid along. Should I change one of my aspects to account for her as well?

Some people haven't seen an elf before.
What would you tell them about yourself?
Dealing with frightened farm hands is a bit different to making pleasantries with a courtier.
Haven't seen an elf before? That's so strange! I don't really know if I'd tell them anything, exactly, its hard to know where to start. But I can show them what we're like! Graceful, and art loving, and agile, and we have long memories... I mean, even farmhands have to like music, right? It'd be easier if it was fishermen, I think; my people live in the great mangroves and do a lot of fishing and pearl diving and stuff like that.

Being an adventurer is sadly not very glamorous.
Well except for when the stakes are the world itself.
Let us hope our students don't have to deal with the dangers we did.
Well, I've kind of had my fill of glamorous things. I want to do something really exciting!

Oh wow. You lot sure do take things seriously here don't ya? Nah, but that's fine with me. I just want to clarify some things 'bout that first. Me and my friends might have been a band of unruly hooligans like the town watch liked to call us, but we had a code, ya know? And the most important one we had was that ya don't mess with your buddies. I mean, it's just common sense! If ya can't trust the guy next to you and he don't trust ya either, you'll probably find one of 'em with a knife stuck in their back sooner or later.

And after all, we'll be working together for the next few years, I think. Better to make some friends now than have them treat you like some leper 'cause of your sticky fingers. Life's best when you're enjoying it with others in my experience.

quote:

Wealth is a great motivator to be sure, but it's a means to an end.
What do you want to do with your wealth once you finish?
Huh, never really thought 'bout it. My family likes to say that money makes the world go round, and ya can't say they're wrong there. I know it can't buy ya everything, but it sure as hell makes life a lot easier! But what do I want with it? If I had to say, I just don't want to be like those folks on the street, who wasted away their lives and have to beg to survive. Bumming off my family ain't appealing either. So, I'd say I just want the security and independence that comes from being rich.

Other than that, oh I dunno. Maybe I'll travel around the world in luxury? Or give some to Ma and Pa. Gods know they deserve it for putting up with me for so long. But beyond that, who knows? I'm still young, and I've got the rest of my life to figure that out.

Ah! For a shorter version, Lanibelle will do; it is actually partially the name of my great grandmother. I will not bore you with details on how we dark elves do our naming, but taking that as a shortened version will honor both myself and her spirit, and she has always been one of my favored ancestors. And yes, I suppose fire has it's limitations, but pyromancy is what I am good at, and if I am to learn other schools...well, this is why I am here, no? Now, to get to the brass pins, as I have heard some say. It is indeed my first time out of the homeland! And oh, it is magnificent! But, you must understand, quite alien! It is so...green! The grass, the trees! Nothing at all like the deserts and scrublands back home! There are the marshes of course - my family owns a decent amount of land there, and I have visited once before - but still, it is strange here. There are so many...mammals! The great, hooved, terrifying beasts you have tamed to ride on are especially fantastic! And your food is...well...your food...say, my family, we are rich most off the spice trade. Perhaps your cooks could speak to me? I could maybe help organize things. I am at least partially here as a druloren cultural ambassador of sorts, after all. Oh, but I drift off topic. At any rate, yes, much of this land is new and foreign to me, as foreign as I must seem to everyone else. I know I am attractive, but I have never heard the sort of propositions I have here! At least, I think so. It is hard at times to understand - standards of beauty are different, as well you must know, and there are times where I cannot tell if I am complimented or insulted.

Yes, I have had many difficulties and troubles. Most are connected to my...let is go with "inadequate" training on social mores here. The way people here dress - truly scandalous, or at least it would be were we back home! Your collars, so short, they might not even be there! That has been very difficult to deal with, and I'm not sure how people here can continue to be so casual about it. And, I am afraid I have caused offense in more then one occasion. I am thankful at least here for my diplomatic training to help soothe such matters, but it would seem those hooved beasts are a sacred animal here, as my wonderment on their taste was taken very poorly. There was that small issue with the..."pig?" And the barn. Do not fret, I had enough money to cover compensation. Things are so flammable here! And COLD! Why, when I was in the moun - when I was on the road here (mother forbade me from leaving the road and I am a dutiful daughter, so I couldn't have been in the mountains), I saw snow! Actual snow! I'll be honest - that's been the most surprising so far. I was so sure it was just a fairy tale!

But, I do not wish to appear to be complaining. I can handle the cold once I get some shopping done - oh, and I cannot wait to see what I can put together using local clothing - and I am getting better at controlling the flammability of things in these lands. As for social functions, well, we learn more every day, yes? And I am quite good at easing problems. Yes, do not worry. I am more then capable.
