Operation Rock Rage

Today we have a Guerrilla Operation. The choices weren't particularly exciting and the rewards didn't include an engineer. I would have strongly preferred taking any mission that had an engineer as a reward but it just wasn't an option this time and I had to make the best call that I could. Given the continual supply shortage this run has been experiencing I went for the supply reward. Sometimes the dark events dictate which mission you take, sometimes the rewards dictate which mission you take, and sometimes they're all so bland and non-critical you sit on the map screen clicking between all three of them for a minute and 45 seconds trying to decide so you have to edit that out with a smooth fade cut.

Hack the objective missions are one of my favorite mission types. The time limit may be a little shorter than some of the other ones but it doesn't demand you cross an entire map like VIP or Dark VIP extraction missions. There isn't that VIP to keep safe nor a dark VIP to carry around over one of your soldiers shoulders, thus taking them out of the fight to haul your captive around. In my opinion the really nice bonus to the hack objective missions is that the objective always comes with nice permanent hacking rewards. While the street lamps will boost your stats for a few turns, stun/disable an enemy, refill your action points and can be incredibly useful in winning the fight, the objective hacks give you things that will offer bonuses on the world map or permanent boosts like Enemy Protocol (RIP Lobster). Also with specialists you rarely need to expose and risk yourself to hack the object. Often you can hack the objective from the safety of cover from as far back as light of sight will allow. If the situation is good and you have a high scoring hacker you can take your time to set him up to make the hack attempt and go big on the hack attempt to score a useful bonus on the geoscape.

While there wasn't anything particularly new about this mission to delve into I was particularly proud of how I dug myself out of a bad situation with the second pod of aliens. Moving Talow up right before ending my turn was a bad call, and I paid for it as I activate two snakes and a codex. The codex then immediately disabled four of my soldiers weapons and a snake bound Talow up. Starting your turn with 4 people that need to move and reload before being useful in any way is bad, add the snake constrict to that and it's worse. So I'm kind of proud I managed to stay calm and dig myself out of that. Auto loaders on the grenadiers and utilizing Alessandra's skills to make three attacks in a turn to deal with a codex cloning behind my team really helped turn the situation around. Sometimes situations are really bad, but a lot of the time you can look around and start to figure out ways of dealing with them if you've brought the right people and items. I went from what was probably the worst way to activate that pod to surrounded and in a bad place, to killing the alien pod in one turn. I hope that is a good example of how even really bad situations can be turned around.

Ranger Corporal Talow

I figure with Gasmask and Hulk Hogan going big on the Assault line of things that the LP might like to see what can be done with a Ranger using the Scout skill set. I'll honestly say it's not the skills I ever normally pick but I'm also excited to give it another try to re-evaluate my position on the matter. I'll leave it up to you guys to pick Scout or Assault for Talow.

Support Major Rank
Ever Vigilant vs Guardian

For me this is a tough decision. Both skills modify how a support soldier deals with overwatch. Ever Vigilant lets the support get a free overwatch if they spend all their action points on moving. Essentially get a Dash + Overwatch which is really useful if you need to reposition in a hurry, or just if you're trying to move up into the shroud while their aren't enemies. It's passive, which is a trait both Guava and I like about it because we have enough poo poo to remember most of the time. Guardian also modifies overwatch, giving you a 50% chance to take an additional overwatch shot if the previous shot was a hit. I say previous because yes, this can me a theoretical infinite amount of overwatch shots, 50/50 chances and ammo permitting. The catch is that successive Guardian bonus shots must be made at different targets. You can unfortunately not take multiple shots on the same target. This makes Guardian more valuable when setting up that initial ambush on the first pod of a concealment map where it's easier to make sure your Guardian will have the potential opportunity to fire at three targets and makes Guardian less valuable when there is only a single target. Still it is a very strong skill and it too is passive which is nice.

Honestly this is a 50/50 for me. Ever Vigilant offers more benefit to situations that demand more mobility. Guardian offers more benefit when you can plant your support to ambush aliens moving forward.

Winner: Personal preference. Both skills are strong and somewhat similar in what they do.

Phantom is an underrated skill, for one big reason: a character that has it enters concealment at the beginning of missions where you normally don't get it. Characters with Phantom are great for scouting ahead for pods during VIP, retaliation or whatether other missions where the enemy starts off alert, and being ready to ambush that first pod can make or break an entire mission. So sure, send Talrow down the Scout path.

Remember though, when the whole squad is concealed, don't scout with your Phantom! They still lose concealment if, well, they lose concealment. And I've wasted it a few times by having them find the first enemies first. Especially jumping down off buildings next to civilians.

Ever Vigilant wins for me, simply because of the narrower window Guardian works in. Ever Vigilant is "You get a free shot if you dashed", and Guardian is "You get a free shot if you're already overwatching AND have a second target in sight that moves AND you already hit the first one AND you make a 50/50 RNG". Since you usually want to avoid having multiple aliens alive during their turn in the first place and it's normally better to take an active action than overwatch if there are, I've found Guardian only really is useful (as you mentioned) for that first pod ambush. Guardian's just got too many ifs.

Yeah, if you're patient you can use a Phanton to scout out the second pod, though that means not using them to attack the first one (at least, not until they gain a later skill).

Get Phantom: a Phantom Ranger is more situational than a Blademaster since you trade off a soldier shooting for being able to spot and prepare for incoming pods even in missions where you are detected, so it's a trade-off but one where it's worth keeping one around for.
Also in a pinch they can get you a "free" flanking shot (or two with another skill).

I love the potoo,

Regarding the sniper and suit chatter in the video, I've had good success using a sniper in an exo/war suit, fielding the shotgun or flamethrower type weapons. I prize flexibility highly in my troopers, and as it happens snipers occasionally have use for a good close-in option or area-effect attack. Don't use it every mission, but it's welcome when it's needed.

As for the skill chat for this level, I've already noted my preference for Ever Vigilant, specifically combining it with Covering Fire to reliably turn specialist dashes into an extra rifle shot on something. Guardian's nice when it happens but is too unreliable for my taste.

There's a very special mission way later in the game where a Guardian Support won that mission all by himself. It triggered 4 times and he out right murdered 2 Mutons. Since then I have always gone with Guardian.

Although the way you explained how Ever Vigilant will work with your medic makes sense to me, I never thought of it that way.

EDIT: I read what you said in your blurb, I guess they changed it because when I got those 5 Overwatch shots they kept hitting the same target.

It's because he continually finds new ways to break the AI over his knee, and Jake Solomon seems to have decided that 'countering BeagleRush's strategies' is the key design decision for XCOM 2.

Which, for some people who liked the old X-COM game strategy of 'methodically sweep the map until you find the enemy by being shot at, and then saturate that area with fire' - or even the XCOM strategy of 'overwatch until the aliens get bored and walk into your carefully positioned trap' - seems a bit un-fun.

Things like timed missions and turn order breaking enemies really annoy that kind of player, and make XCOM 2 incrementally less fun to play.

People actually liked doing that? I was so goddam thankful when waiting around being bored for 10 minutes stopped being the optimal strategy in XCOM 2, I'm pretty sure that the point of changing the game up was for that.

I guess it's rooted in the old tactical games where planning was key to success. I mean, I loved the old Rainbow Six games where you would plot out a plan of attack for your troops and then execute it - and to some extent the creeping overwatch is a logical extension of that. Controlling factors to a maximum degree to prevent enemies from getting the edge.

If you see the plot of XCOM as 'humanity, through careful tactics and technological development, overcome the alien threat' rather than 'humanity, through pluck, determination, and stolen alien weaponry, defeat the alien threat' then your approach is going to be fundamentally different.

It burns when I LP
I typically take shots at any 'big name' Youtube LPer. Most of them are hacks that appeal to lowest common denominator audiences. Beaglerush doesn't do anything particularly great or interesting, but blew up as a face of xcom on youtube through... I dunno, partnerships or subscriber spam or whatever, i don't' pay attention to or know how people get e-famous on youtube. But if i made my videos like his I would shoot myself because of how much editing I would have to do. I hate editing when I'm not inspired by something special (like putting Lobsters death reel together). I sat on this last update for a week about because I couldn't get myself to sift through 40 minutes of audio which really isn't that much work. Beagle will spend 30 minutes on the team select screen blathering about gently caress all and keep it all in. If I did that I am sure goons would tell me to gently caress right off and learn to cut out wasted screen time. And they certainly should. I edit out boring poo poo because I respect my audience and only want to show them what I feel is worth their time to watch. I do not feel many youtube LPers, Beagle included, have this kind of thinking and I feel it shows in their work.

One of his big claims to fame that I know of was his Xcom1 impossible run videos which largely consisted of running his troops in a single file line so no one could ever activate a pod but the pointman. Which mean doing such gamey maneuvers such as leaving a conga line of soldiers out in the open in a single file line. That's such weak tea. I got criticized in my first LP for selectively hiring soldiers with average or above aim values, even if that meant hiring and firing 3 soldiers for every 1 I kept. I remember a poster criticizing how I handled a lone thin man because I had 5 soldiers all with ~65% chances to hit and kill the thin man and I said something to the effect of 'I could try to maneuver and flank, but gently caress it because I have enough soldiers with enough shots and high enough chances to hit that someone's going to kill him if I just shoot at him' and the poster thought that sucked the fun out of the game and meant I was just exploiting the system because I'd selected soldiers with high enough aim to circumvent the need to maneuver and do tactical poo poo on the battlefield. Or at least that's how I remember it/read into the post.

Essentially the short summation is that I feel most Youtube super star LPers are only such because they clear a much lower bar than we typically expect here on SA.

On a very :goonsay: note, I can't figure out what's going on with the time display when you move the Avenger around. I don't know if anyone else has noticed that when you lift off, the time display seems to "jump" several hours, then when you land, it "jumps" again, in the other direction. For example, as you took off from Brazil, the time display went from 8:04 PM to 12:05 AM. Then when you landed in Mexico, it "jumped" from 5:59 AM to 10:00 PM.

I thought "Oh, I know what this is. It's not a bug, it's time zones! When you're flying, the time is shown in UTC, but when you land, it's in local time." But that doesn't fit. You started in Brazil, where the time zone is UTC-3*. I.e., when it's noon in UTC (also known as Greenwich Mean Time), it should be 9:00 AM in Brazil. But if that were what's going on, the time display should have jumped forward to 11:00 PM, not back to 12:00 AM. Even if they used one of Brazil's other time zones, like UTC-4 or UTC-5, the time should have jumped forward to either 12:00 AM on June 2nd (it was June 1st when you took off), or 1:00 AM on June 2nd. But the display still said June 1st when you took off. And Mexico's time zones range from UTC-5 to UTC-8, so again, the time should have jumped back, not forward, when you landed.

... Unless there's BOTH time zones AND a bug going on here. That would explain it, actually. The bug is that the date display doesn't change when it should. If they have all of Brazil listed as UTC-4, and all of Mexico listed as UTC-8, that would explain the times that you were seeing. And the date should have gone to June 2nd in UTC, but it stayed on June 1st. Yeah, that would explain what's going on.

Maybe that wasn't bothering anyone else; I seem to be the first one to have commented on it. But it was bothering me for I don't know how many videos, and I'm glad that I've finally (I think) figured it out.

* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Brazil shows multiple time zones for Brazil, but in the east of Brazil where you were, the time zone is UTC-3.
