Based off this Australian movie from 2010 (and not so co-incidentally my favorite movie of that year), this new summer TNT show centers on 17-year-old Joshua "J" Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Headed by boot-tough matriarch Janine "Smurf" Cody and her right-hand Baz, who runs the business and calls the shots, the clan also consists of Pope, the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody boys; Craig, the tough and fearless middle son; and Deran, the troubled, suspicious "baby" of the family.

Already renewed for a second season, its the summer show to watch, showing how a relatively innocent kid might survive being thrown into a wasps nest made out of his own family. The action is taut, the characters pretty ambigious, its crime TV that doesn't insult your intelligence.

The Cast:

Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders) plays the aformentioned 17 year old, Joushua "J" Cody a boy with youthful features that still doesn't hide a buried cunning just waiting to come out.

Ellen Barken (alot of good movies) plays the part of Janine "Smurf" Cody, a matriach of a crime clan that has been robbing banks and other establishments in Southern Cali for years. Sweet and adoring of her children, there is a hard-edge to her performance that nevertheless comes pricking out as sharp as a gleaming knife.

Scott Speedman plays Baz Blackwell, the male head of the family once the oldest son, Pope Cody, was sent to jail for three years. His easygoing and friendly facade hides a sharp criminal mind, and a rising tendency to perhaps prioritize his own concerns, which includes his young family, more than Smurf might wish.

Shawn Hatosy (ER, The Cooler, Southland, etc) plays Andrew "Pope" Cody, the recently freed oldest Cody brother. After three years away, he is trying to return to his previous role in the family, even as a few of them seem to be somewhat wary of his return. He is J's mother's twin.

Ben Robson plays Craig Cody, the middle child, a large and potentially very violent man that nevertheless is happy maintaining the peace of the family, and willing to play along with both Baz and Smurf.

Jake Weary (It Follows) plays the youngest son of Smurf, and Cody's youngest uncle. A party boy and wild-child, he has a violatile personality that sometimes clashes with the rest of his family.

Molly Gordon plays Nicky, Cody's young girlfriend, whose youthful rebellion increasingly has her being drawn to the Cody household.

Nikkii Micheaux playing a Detective, Sandra Yates, lurking around the Cody clan.

Christina Ochea, playing Renn Randal, a drugdealer linked with Craig Cody.

Ellen Wroe playing Alexa Anderson, a teacher of J's that has recently taken an interest in him.

Animal Kingdom is already scoring 6.7 million viewers a week, with the last episode an 18% jump from last, which occassioned TNT to quickly order a second season. Its good TV and it doesn't look its going to be cut-off anytime soon, so watch it already. You won't regret it.

Just caught up with the season. Jesus christ this show does not hold back. Some cool swerves, especially if you're familiar with the movie.
