Generations seems pretty great, but I'm already overwhelmed with the styles and even more weapons than before. I mained switch axe in 4 but it feels really, really different in this one (or more likely I just forgot how to use it) and I dropped it almost immediately. I've only done the very first gathering quest so I'm not committed at all -- what's a solid weapon+style combination that's good for someone with base familiarity with the game but never got very far in any of the previous ones? It seems like every time I play this game I end up picking a weapon that I didn't realize was way too complicated for my beginner skill level and get frustrated and give up.

Striker Longsword is great and extremely simple. Gauge management becomes super easy. The Sakura Slash art instantly bumps you up an entire level and Unhinged Spirit gives you infinite gauge for up to 90(!) seconds. For your third art you can take Absolute Evasion if you feel that Critical Juncture (the final LS-specific counter art) is too hard to use.

What does the diamonds on the start menu > status > equipment mean?
And how many skill points does it take to trigger a skill and where does it tell you this?
I have like a million questions about the UI.

The color inside the diamond is the pigment that armor piece currently has, which determines the color of certain details of that armor piece. You can actually change these colors by going to the item box in your house and selecting Change Appearance > Change Armor Pigment. How the armor piece actually changes color depends on every specific piece. Mostly it's just little trims and straps that change color, but sometimes it can be a huge change. For example, the Bulldrome Cap used in the popular BujaBujaBu set actually changes the color of the entire thing which means you can go out hunting with giant blue or red wig if you want to.

Skills all trigger at 10 points. Some might have additional levels, usually every 5 points thereafter. So Attack Up requires 10 points for Small, 15 for Medium and 20 for Large, but some skills don't have additional levels. You can check specific skills by hitting the Y button in the big skill screen which details all your skills, which is the last page of the Status panel, Skill Details.

More usefully, you can also do this in the shop to check skills on any equipment you're browsing. Select any armor piece and hit Y, this will bring up this same screen, but showing a preview of what your skill totals would look like with the selected piece equipped. From there you can hit Y again to check the skill details.

I don't understand how the name Tetsucabra relates to the monster's leaping abilities and giant jaws unless I guess it's a japanese thing but you'd think they wouldn't translate the bit of dialogue that explains that into the english version.

From MH4U's translation blog:

quote:

The naming process for Tetsucabra was a bit longer than we had anticipated. The monster’s Japanese name alludes to iron (hence “tetsu”), and character traits such as stubborn and demonic, so we aimed for a stubborn, tough-sounding name, and came up with Cabrado and Testaran. The former was based on a combination of obstinado (Spanish for stubborn) and an attempt to keep the cabura (かぶら) part of the Japanese name, which is a type of ogre-like tile found on Japanese rooftops. Testaran was conceived by combining testardo (Italian for stubborn, bullheaded) and Ranidae, the scientific family name for true frogs.

When we ran these names by Fujioka-san, he rejected both of them and asked for a couple of new proposals. The names themselves weren’t bad at all, he said, but Tetsucabra (and its subspecies) was designed with some Japanese overtones. Believe it or not, many of Tetsucabra’s attacks are based on sumo techniques, such as the sidestomp, which mimics a traditional shikogeri (四股蹴り), and his kanji name (鬼蛙) was created to appear more Japanese in nature. Knowing this information really helped, and we decided that if the monster was designed to be more Japanese, we ought to stick with the Japanese name for MH4U.

How do I stop thinking that the Hammer has a longer reach than it actually does? I keep whiffing when monsters will shift positions slightly, and on anything where the head is just a little higher off the ground (Hermitaur, R Ludroth) I can never get consistent head hits.

It's easier to hit heads from the side, because there's less chance monster movement will make you miss. Instead of standing directly in front of Royal Ludroth, try hitting his face from the side. When using the triple pound, remember the golfswing is the most important hit, since it carries a massive 50 stun value. The golfswing arcs from your lower right to your upper left, this means that you want to favor standing on the right side of the monster, otherwise your golfswing might end up hitting the neck instead of the head which absolutely sucks because all that stun damage is wasted.

As for crabs, you have to accept that the Hammer just can't hit certain heads reliably with the lovely range. Hit the legs until you trip him then go for the face.

I heard something about bombs so I tried it out, I can get him to eat them and fish him out afterwards, but he doesn't stay down long enough to do more than a single GS charge which isn't nearly enough.

Khezu is an interesting one. He doesn't really have more health than other monsters. What makes him appear beefier is the fact that his weak points are really weak and his strong points are really strong. Like the difference between hitting Tetsu's head and Tetsu's legs is doing 33% more damage to the head (56 to 42). but the difference between hitting Khezu's head and Khezu's legs is doing a whopping 150% more damage to the head (63 to 25). If you can reliably hit Khezu's head or neck he will actually go down faster than most monsters.

Anything with -drome in the name is essentially the lowest tier of big monster. Once you start getting new monsters that aren't just a scaled up small monster the game actually begins.

Also BujaBujaBu is massive early in the game. Attack Up Large is a flat +20 damage to your weapon, when you're rocking an 80-100 damage weapon that's a 20-25% damage increase.

This Equal Dragon Weapon had enough firepower, strength, and endurance to face several other dragons at once.
Representative of the peak of wyvern engineering during the War, parts to make such weapons were supplied by the Dragon Catchers/Hunters, ancestors of the modern-day Monster Hunter.
During this great war, human and dragon fought against each other to the brink of extinction.
Eventually, both civilizations faced an inevitable downfall.

As a rule with Bow do I want to be manually aiming for weak spots all the time or just shooting more or less as fast as possible?

Also, it's shot damage I'd want to reference on e.g. Kiranico, right, not impact or cut?

Yes, the bow does shot damage which has it's own separate hit data.

You should be hitting weak spots constantly, otherwise you're wasting valuable Power Coating charges on sub par shots. Stamina efficiency is also a concern if you're not downing Juice. However that doesn't mean you should be manually aiming every time. For the vast majority of monsters the weakest spot is the head, you can usually hit that without manual aim by positioning yourself correctly, like any other weapon does.

For some monsters with high heads, like Zinogre, or when fighting in uneven terrain you might need to manually adjust your aim to hit their heads. In those cases you should first line up the shot horizontally to the head, then quickly enter aim mode and nudge your shot upwards or downwards as necessary. The entire aiming process should take like half a second at most.

At no point outside exceptional circumstances should you be standing and aiming for more than one second or so.

Makes sense. How much do you emphasize it when the monster isn't presenting his weakspot? Like say S. Magala is turned 180 degrees from me because of the loving cats, do you run around and wait to take shots or take them anyway while maneuvering to the front, or do so after removing your coating, or what?

If it's one of those times the monster charged straight across the room chasing someone, it's out of critical distance and the shot isn't worth taking. In this case sheathe and run to reposition or take the breather to potion up or craft some extra coatings or whatever. Resist the urge to take those super long range shots, they're completely worthless.

If it's the monster just turning around while you're within critical distance, you still shouldn't shoot. Charge and circle around the monster waiting for your opportunity. For most monsters the difference between a head shot and a tail/wing/torso shot is anywhere from twice to three times the damage. So it's definitely worth waiting an extra couple of seconds to make your shots count.

That said, it's not the end of the world if every shot isn't perfect. It's worth checking the hit tables here. Sometimes there's a secondary weak spot that's good enough. Take your example, Shaggy. A head shot does 60% and is definitely the best possible zone to shoot. Most other zones are in the 20s range, but the back legs take 45. While not as good the head, hitting for 45% is still a reasonable shot.

It's generally pretty logical. Try to aim for the center of the hit zone if possible, but don't worry overmuch.

Pollyanna posted:

I find manually aiming the bow to be quite difficult actually. :( It really knocks you out of your flow when you have to switch into it and fiddle with the circle pad until it's lined up. Aiming and positioning in general is by far the hardest part of Monster Hunter, actually.

So far I've just been spamming Power Coating and hitting things on their sides or legs. Probably not very effective. I suppose I need to hit their weak points to be particularly effective, then?

It was mentioned already, but I find it a lot easier to use the d-pad for aiming. Try that. Also most of your aiming is done not with the d-pad, but with regular movement. Your shots should be mostly lined up before you even go into aim mode, so that any aiming done with the d-pad is a minimal adjustment.

And yes, hitting weak spots will massively improve your kill times.
