Stewart Lee (UK comedian) wrote a memoir a couple years ago (I'm reading it now), and he talks about how artists have become able to cultivate a dedicated following and make a living without having to be a big national name. You might not have millions of fans, but there are people who like you, and they'll come out to shows or buy your stuff. It's kind of inspiring.

Both of his books (annotated standup sets with intros) are incredible. Super interesting thought processes and brutal self-criticism.

all history should be in one big museum marked AMERICAN MUSEUM, it will be on the back of a semi truck and travel the country 24/7. it will cost five hundred dollars a ticket and sell out at trump rallies

Excellent podcast. The audio is actually too good, and without room tone you can hear every edit he makes.

First of all, bear in mind that a doctor making $200,000 is in the 6th percentile, even assuming their salary is the entire household income and they have no investment or other income. But that's a good question because working class status also concerns things like your working conditions and precarity, and medicine is a profession that's shifting more and more from employer to employed.

By the way, where does the Dry Boy thing really come from? Because I listened to all the free episodes, I'm working my way through the premium ones (currently somewhere around 55, I just let the playlist run) and this is not a thing outside of Felix's weird multifaceted persona.

Think it was in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens episode and they're talking about not using condom lube. Later they mention desert plants and Felix doubles-down on Dry Boys

I love the cross-section of tabletop gamers in the Call of Cthulhu episodes.

Matt is the newbie roleplayer who genuinely wants to learn the game and be good at it, but whose lack of system mastery eventually bites him in the rear end, ruining the whole thing.

Will is the gamer who develops a complicated backstory for his character and gets really invested in the game's lore and constantly tries to bring it up and integrate it into the actual game's proceedings, then tries to sabotage and derail the game when he's ignored.

And Felix, of course, is the chaos gamer.

It speaks to Virgil's skill that he's able to run a good session with these guys. He's definitely run into similar personalities before, with Matt's situation being especially common.

This post is right on the money. Matt doesn't truly trust in his GM to make all decisions interesting, because he feels like there's a correct way to play that he's screwing up. The "should have prepared" rant will trigger a lot of bad memories around building spellcasters as a newbie. Will was playing some parallel game that happened to line up with the narrative, and where his guy is the Main One (as Brendan put it. But, he kept the story going by paying attention to and caring about the plot elements in a way that sadbrains & crazybrains won't bother. Felix ruled, perfect balance of styles. Also, it did kind of feel like Virgil was railroading them in the Pizzagate adventure (especially at the end) but he certainly had a lot to juggle and never appeared indecisive.

I feel like the negativity Matt projected this time is balanced by how fun it was hearing him get into the DC art gallery speakeasy.

Debate results:

Matt won the audience's hearts by
1. yelling passionately
2. appealing to the guilty consciences of Gamers
3. putting forth a fundamentally good argument about games as life-replacements
4. never wavering by bringing in new facts to support that argument but instead repeating it with more and more confidence
5. being physically larger than Virgil
6. being a stout man who isn't sweaty under stage lights and doesn't self-consciously shift his clothes to hide shameful body fat.

Virgil won the audience's minds West Wing style because he
1. wore a suit
2. kept his cool
3. appealed to the inner goodness of gamers-as-modern-citizens
4. marginalized the impact of Matt's thesis by arguing it applies only to a small reactionary subgroup of Gamers
5. didn't constantly repeat one point in a way that would make for poorly written script dialog
